Now I want to read a book on post surrender/occupied Japan.

I read this book a couple of years ago.  The discussion on the occupation may not be as extensive as you're looking for, but I thought it was a good description of the last weeks before the end of the war, and the first weeks of the occupation.

I forgot about Retribution.  I read that book also.  Good choice.
