I might just have to plunge into this one; there's an insane number of maps, and they're gorgeous

They lay flat at 17x22, with a dry erase / laminate finish that also takes static-cling overlays (and the book includes a bunch)

with stretch goals, they're up to 32 maps, almost $600k (of a $10k goal) and the base book is only $35

Make yer own.

Illwinter's Floorplan Generator

yeah, but not the cool book format for my shelf (that's too small for the book... )

No, I mean you can make your own book like that with your own custom maps. Just print out the map (with Illwinter's Floorplan Generator or equivalent) and cover it with something like Kassa Clear Dry Erase Board Sticker. You make a book out of it if that's want you want. You can write on it. You could even print tokens out and stick them to static cling vinyl if you want the removable tokens. Heck, the cling vinyl tokens by themselves would probably stick to regular inkjet photo paper. (Note to self: Have I just discovered a cat-proof method for playing board games? I know, I'm probably underestimating cats.)

Sigh. I really need to start writing 'How To' for this site.

or, I could support a fellow creative person in the game design world and order a book from him :)

Well sure, if you like being limited to his maps. As Peter Jennings used to say, "It's your money".
And if that's game design then I need to start a Kickstarter myself. I could use $600K.  :D

I could see a product like this being nice for one off sessions.

Personally I use a chessex mat and wet erase markers. Quick, simple, and usable for most RPG settings or systems.
