I've never quite been able to get into the Spellforce series, but I'm wondering if this entry might change my mind:

https://conquest.spellforce.com/

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1581770/SpellForce_Conquest_of_Eo/

It's turn-based, for one thing (as opposed to the previous games).  For another, it looks like they're aiming to produce more of a grand-strategy-style title, whereas the previous games have felt more like your bog-standard RTS base-building affairs.

I'm still not going to hold my breath, but I will at least be keeping my eye on this one.

I followed it a bit but there did seem to be a lot of negative reviews, mainly performance issues IIRC.

Any idea which one that was?  There have been a number of games in the Spellforce series over the years.

In any case, it sounds like it's a different team working on this new one.  I think the devs for Conquest of Eo are the same folks behind the recent Fantasy General games.

It was Spellforce III as far as I recall.

Well I've already lost interest after seeing this dev post in the Steam forums:

Quote
- It's 4x RPG, but not with the usual territorial expansion as your focus is on the mage and his minions, not kings and castles
- One main base, but yo can have "outposts"

- Closer to FG2, though without the upgrading "tree"
- The end-game goal is the same, but there are many many paths to it.

I'm sure some people enjoy those kinds of games, but the first two points make it a no-go for me.

Top of my list - I enjoy the other Spellforce games and I like the new direction this one is going.

A mobile wizard's tower.  I'll admit that's different.
