Building on a BBMike idea, we're starting to take a look back at some of the wargaming's history, so look for these every couple of weeks on Thursdays, around #UnboxingDay, of course

I cut my computer teeth with the C-128 way back in the late 80's. Kampgruppe, Battles of Napoleon, and the Gold Box series (RPG's not wargames) by SSI and some sub game I can't remember the name, not Silent Service. Red Storm Rising followed. Then Panzer General on the 3DO, remember that one?  Great games, great times!

#TBT/Throwback Thursday ~ 1974 Avalon Hill Catalog
One of the more common items that I might find in a box, however, is an old catalog from one of the original wargame companies.

Back in '74, I didn't even have 10 cents a year to spare.  :-[

#TBT/Throwback Thursday ~ TAHGC 1990 Best Sellers List
What can we learn from Avalon Hill's 1990 best sellers list?

Did you pick up any of these games between 1988-1991?

For me, I think I got the Gettysburg game about the time my family visited that battlefield, summer of '88? Before 1987, I or my group already had Squad Leader, Afrika Korps, and Diplomacy (both PC and board versions). I bounced off ASL when it came out.

Did you stick to Avalon Hill’s wargames, or did you also play in their other sandboxes, too?

We picked a handful of AH wargames in the early '80s, but swung hard for GDW, Victory Games, and Star Trek games (primarily Star Fleet Battles), as well as RPGs.

What thoughts do you have about these sales charts, and the games on them?

The non-wargame popularity is interesting, as I don't recall seeing any of those games outside of a store, nor can I recall meeting anyone who played them, until I joined CABS.

#TBT / ThrowbackThursday ~ Task Force: Naval Tactics and Operations in the 1980’s
It’s one thing to remember an old mailer from a wargame of yore, but what does it mean when you still have that game on your shelf? Regimental Commander Brant passed me an old SPI mailer and asked if I wanted to do a TBT entry. I had to laugh—and say yes—because Task Force: Naval Tactics and Operations in the 1980’s by Joseph Balkoski from SPI (1981) is a part of my wargame collection.

#TBT / ThrowbackThursday ~ The Last Panzer Victory
I still have all six of those magazines in my possession and decided to dig them out to see what Throwback Thursday treasures I could find. I chose to start with issue #6 which, on the back cover, had an advertisement for The Last Panzer Victory from West End Games.

#TBT ~ The General Magazine Special Edition, 1988
This special 64-page edition was designed to showcase Avalon Hill wargames and boardgames. Looking back this Throwback Thursday, for me the issue evokes feelings of nostalgia, boredom, and some rueful thoughts.
