Brant - do you have / played the Central Front games from SPI/S&T?

https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgamefamily/4255/central-front-series

every one of them, multiple times.

they're very good, but a little dated at this point.

I did have all of them. I always thought that  the 'friction point' system was actually a very good method of recording accumulated loss of cohesion / combat effectiveness. I'm surprised that other games haven't (as far as I know) taken that approach.

Yep, the maps were pretty gross.

A graphic update would really do that system well.  Ty Bomba is remaking it, but my fear (based on his comments) is that it will be essentially a completely different game.

One of the things I really liked about it was that it (mostly) accurately reflected the border cav units.  Just because the rest of the game was BN/RGT-level doesn't mean the cav had to be.  Instead of a couple of Squadron-of-Death counters for the 11th ACR, they were split out into troop-level units ("companies" to the rest of the world) and able to be properly dispersed per the deployment plans.  Now, they weren't going to kill an entire Soviet MRR, but that was never their mission.  A properly-spaced covering mission of 2 squadrons, with the tank companies / how bty's to reinforce where needed, can easily hold up that MRR for several turns, and completely de-synch the Soviet plan.

I just looked at it and certainly its prettier, but as you say, in a way its pointless if they don't base it around the CF system. Despite the gfx, it was the system that I found to be interesting.

I'm emailing them today to tell them I can't get it :(

There's just too much other stuff going on in my life to drop $200 on a game, no matter how awesome I think it's going to be.

Same thing here. While I would love to add this to my collection, I just cant justify the price. That combined with it's size and complexity, and I know this would most likely never hit the table. Had to make the same decision with the World in Flames Collectors Edition (really want those mounted map boards), and that latest Korean War game from Compass games (Map is just too big).

I have my eye on this one as well. I think I have posted before that it uses the same system as the old GDW game, 'Road to the  Rhine' which was an excellent game.

Ya, it looks pretty intriguing.  But like I said, the map is just too damn big to fit on my gaming table.  You need an 8.5 foot table to fit it.

See, I have the space to set up some of these monsters, in a room where they won't get molested.

What I don't have are the funds to acquire said monsters...

I have to admit, I have several games which I brought knowing that I do not the have space to set them up and leave them for any length of time. Sometimes, the lure of specific games overrides all common sense.

My excuse has always been that the games in question do have one or more smaller one map scenarios, and thus I am able to justify the acquisition to myself.

The last such game was 'Rommel's War' by L2 Design Group; I lusted after this game for a long time until I was at last able to get my hands on a new copy. The 2 maps are actually bigger than 'standard' size maps and, once laid out, North Africa being the shape that it is, results in a map that is 6 foot long!

My Albatross monster games were TSR's Barbarossa and SS Amerika (can't recall the publisher on that but no way I'm searching for that term on my company's network). I sold my copy of Barbarossa before I moved but still have that other game somewhere.

I don't have the space to set monster games up either. Yet. I will get a proper game table at some point.

I have a table at the river house that I might build a cover for. It's large enough (I think), I just need a way to keep the cats off of it. And no, I can't get rid of the cats.
I am going to buy a game table at some point. I'm kind of bummed that I'm going to miss Carolina Game Tables open house this Saturday.
