I played the original once a few years back and had a good time. I like the game a lot, but to shine you really need to play with all Dune nerds.

I read one of the books and it felt like a chore to get through. I watched the rather 'meh' movie from the 80s and it didn't make me love Dune any more. The most enjoyment I've ever gotten from the Duniverse is Iron Maiden's song on Piece of Mind about Dune

The Sci-fi mini series covering the first two or three books of the mid 2000s was much more true to the books. I don't know how they hold up, but I remember enjoying them quite a bit when they came out.
