The F35's look very 'untidy' aircraft in that configuration - too many moving parts to fall off if you ask me :o
-
The STOVL version the Marines operate is a very complicated machine.
-
Too many things to go wrong - maintenance to keep 'em flying must be a nightmare, especially under operational conditions. Bring back the Harrier, I say.
I still can't understand why they didn't go for a conventional carrier with modified Euro fighters. I gather that the Typhoon would have been perfectly capable of being modified for carrier use.
-

I don't really get that either. I guess it was a cost issue for the carriers. A CATOBAR system is a lot more expensive than adding a ski-jump ramp to the bow flight deck.
-
Unfortunately, given on how the cost of the F35 has escalated, it has probably proved to be false economy.
-
I suspect the RN was focused on getting the carriers funded first and worry about the air wing later.
You Brits may have a worse budgeting and procurement process than we do. Probably better than the Canadians though :D
-
Anything is better than our procedure.... :idiot2:
-
Maybe so, but successive governments couldn't make up their minds about what config carrier to build. You have to wonder how closely the RN was consulted about what they wanted. One suspect some gov palms were greased.

Magnificent!
Its a bit of a pity that neither the Halifax or the Stirling get much attention, although the Stirling did see service as a glider tug. Somewhere we have a picture of my pop-in-law who was a para, in a group shot with part of an aircraft in the background, which may be a Stirling. I'll have to have a look for it, although my bro-in-law may have it.

As a kid, we often took family holidays on the Isle of Wight, going by car ferry from Southampton to Cowes. On the way down the Solent, I well remember seeing these 2 huge unfinished seaplanes. Yes, or the Gloucester Gladiator. The final bi-plane fighter designs were quite interesting if doomed to almost immediate obsolescence.

The Gladiator saw some good service, especially over Malta. I think the Finns used 'em as well - equipped with ski's

Yeah. The A-29 and AT-6 look like inbred cousins and quite fragile to boot. A real ground-attack airframe should sport two engines so if one gets shot up the other one can get the crew home, just like the Bronco...

I did not go to the restoration hanger this time. Actually, I don't think anyone is allowed in there, but there is a viewing platform to look down into the hanger.
When I was there a couple of years ago, the 229 was in the restoration hanger, but now it is out on the floor, and you can walk right up to it. It hasn't been fully restored, so the only thing to see is the center section. It didn't seem to get much interest, maybe because it's right outside the space hanger where Discovery is displayed, and that seems to draw a big crowd (as it should). And without wings, it's pretty small and a little forlorn. I don't think most people walking by understood what they were looking at.

My wife and I were thinking of going to National Harbor tonight or tomorrow. I guess I"ll be on the lookout for Air Force One.

Yeah, there's a replica AF1 at National Harbor. The wife and I toured it right before Christmas. Hardly anyone was there. Overall I was disappointed with the exhibit. A lot of the plane's sections were closed off.

I was not aware of that. Looks like tickets are $35 at peak, but since you didn't think it was that great, we'll probably pass.

These images are of T-38 USAF Test Pilot School aircraft flying faster than the speed of sound (767 mph). No they are not photoshopped. Using new NASA air to air schlieren photographic technology which shoots 1,400 frames per second, people are able to see how the airplanes create waves when air molecules begin to compress because they are flying faster than the speed of sound. These images were taken about 2,000 feet above the aircraft.

I will add that since the Prez is at the top of our (FAA/DOT) boss chain I would guess that even without the FAA saying anything he still could do it.

The FAA belongs to the Executive Branch of the gov't, so somewhere above the head of the FAA, you'll eventually get to the Prez. (I think it's part of the Dept of Transportation but too lazy to even Google it)

Anyone know anything about the next-gen Air Force bomber? Not sure if it's called 2037 Bomber or B-3, or maybe it's both?
All I can find are some Wiki articles. :(
-
That's it in OJs post above - B-21 Raider
-
Looks a lot like the B-2 to me - superficially, anyway.
-
Huh, okay. I thought the B-21 was a 'current' replacement and not intended to be this futuristic program.
-
Afaik, it's the only next-gen bomber the AF is currently planning. The plan is to retire the B-2s and B-1s as enough B-21s become operational. The B-52 is going to be re-engined and upgraded to keep it flying into the 2040s and possibly beyond.
-
We'll still be using B-52s even when we have outer world colonies.

Yeah, that's a great section. I also like how he mentions turning over the captured Sov sub crew over to the French intel guys who were in a "foul mood" after losing Foch.

"pew pew pew" is real!
-
Getting enough energy on target isn’t always the hard part of the challenge. Rather, integrating a system that can detect, classify or ID (depending on ROEs), and track - and packaging the power, beam control, and thermal management system into a small, operational, turn-key system - are the hard challenges. Each of the things I listed are still challenging, but everyone focuses (heh) on power on target. The Navy and Army have a reasonable chance of fielding an operational system in the next decade, but IMO the AF has a long way to go. I also get the impression that the AF is investing the least in high energy lasers, but I haven’t seen their budget numbers so I might be wrong. When I worked JSF in the 90s and 00s, they touted putting a laser on the plane but I knew that wasn’t happening for a long time.
-
As far as the Air Force's MIC pals go, wouldn't successful airborne laser based systems seriously disrupt their very lucrative industry in developing&delivering the current and future crop of AtA and AtG smart weapons?
-

I don't know what "MIC" is.
A laser is not going to replace a-g weapons for a long time. The energetics aren't close. For a-a? I assume in this case we're talking about fighter vs fighter, and not as a close-in defensive weapon against in inbound missile (which was what was tested in the SHIELD program). Maybe, but now we're talking about longer propagation ranges. That brings in another set of complications. For a rough comparison, I'd say an ABL engaging a Scud is roughly (roughly) the same as engaging an aircraft in terms of range and target vulnerability. ABL was housed in a 747, and the front half was beam control and fire control. The back half of the 747 was a MW class laser (at least it was supposed to be - I don't know what power they eventually got). Fiber lasers are currently in the 10s of kW now, so we're talking about scaling up two orders of magnitude. I have no idea how much a MW fiber laser (including energy storage) would weigh compared to the COIL laser in ABL, but that would be a very interesting calculation. And hopefully this illustrates that an a-a weapon isn't going to fit on a fighter. HEL TVD's goal is 100-150 kW on an FMTV.
As far as disrupting the industry -- the companies building bombs and missiles are also for the most part the prime contractors for lasers.
Sorry to be a downer. I first started working on high-energy lasers when I got out of grad school in 1987. Reagan was still president, and I was working on the tail end of SDI. Lasers were just around the corner then. :) Interestingly, for fun (?), I took a lunchtime engineering class offered by my company in an emerging field that was also just around the corner: hypersonics.
-
MIC= Eisenhower's military-industrial complex.
Thanks for the breakdown. I'd assumed that the laser tech firms were in rivalry with those that made smart munitions.

The most unusual conversions were three B-17Gs converted to engine test beds. The nose section was removed and replaced with a strengthened mount for a fifth engine. The Pratt Whitney XT-34, Wright XT-35, Wright R-3350 and Allison T-56 engines were all flight tested on JB-17Gs.

A good portion of current US aircraft designs date back 40-plus years - F-15, F-16, F-18. The B-52 is very likely going to become the '100 year bomber'
Hell, the first flight of the F-117 was in '81. That design is 40 years old now.

The C-17 had a requirement to land on an unimproved runway. So sometime around 1994, I was at Bicycle Lake in Fort Irwin watching a C-17 land. Bike Lake was similar to this video, and when the C-17 landed and put on its thrust reversers, it generated a dust and sand cloud that was so large the huge plane disappeared. When I was certain it had come to a stop, I drove the rental car into the dense cloud looking for the darn plane. I eventually found it, but in the process, the car wound up with a thick layer of dust on the inside. Fortunately, Avis didn't charge me a cleaning fee.

Not to be a party pooper, but the visible image isn't anything special. The specs on the N-G site for the latest Lightening pod show a "1K CCD" camera. If I'm reading that right, it's likely a thousand pixels by a thousand pixels, which is 1 mega pixel and is what you could get in a digital camera in 2002. 5-10 years ago we used Sony block cameras with much higher resolution, and they only cost a few thousand dollars. I presume they chose that format for the visible to match the IR, which they also say is 1K. That would probably be a 1024 by 1024 focal plane array, which is sort of SOA for an operational system, and matching the visible camera with the IR camera is a reasonable decision. When I left the lab 4 years ago, I was integrating a 2K by 2K focal plane array into my system, but I was getting the first FPA with this format.
I'm also a little suspicious of the image in the lower left. I don't think it's an IR image for a couple of reasons, most notably the distinct shadow from the vehicle. I think it's just a gray-scale version of the visible camera. In their defense, they don't label that image as IR, but I bet most people viewing it think that it is IR.
Having said all of that -- I did get to see video from a Lightening pod about 15 years ago. Not sure what generation it was, but it was pretty impressive. When I was developing IR sensors for the Army, I was a bit jealous of the Air Force. Often my biggest challenge was meeting the affordability goal, which an F-16 would probably burn in an hour of flight time.

For the second time since 2017 there has been photographic evidence of a classified version of the Hellfire missile that uses a hardened front end to enable the missile to punch through the roof of civilian vehicles. Immediately after that six sharp blades are deployed and spin round rapidly killing anyone inside. At least that’s the theory after viewing he photos of the vehicle interiors after these attacks. This unconventional “ninja” missile is unofficially called the AGM-114R9X

I just found out that the Eurofighter's avionics for weapons and nav are powered by Motorola 68020 CPU's- the same CPU in my vintage Amiga 1200!
I wonder if BAE and MBB went and bought up all the unsold Amigas when Commodore Computers went under in 1994. ::)

At least they can play 'Laser Squad and Chaos Engine' on the way to a mission.

-
Those were the same CPUs in the early-90s Mac LCs
Yup. The first Macs started with 68000s and pretty much upgraded to 020, 030, and 040s just like the Amigas. I recently acquired an LCII w/ 68030 (along with two 'classic' Macs) that I need to find time to set up and explore, never having used them much back in the day.
Interestingly, the 6502-based Apple II was so ubiquitous in schools that many wouldn't upgrade to the Mac until Apple developed an LC- compatible 'Apple II on a card' so the vast older software libraries which schools had accumulated would run on the newer Macs.
Maybe we should have a nerdy vintage computer/console thread to geek out in.

A summer intern was probably the first to test that capsule.

Back then, before any maiden flights, the test crew could threaten take along a random hostage from the design dept, insuring that all the latter had been trying extra hard to work up to their full potential.

How can you be so passionate about aircraft and yet make such a shite game ;D
I actually have played any of the World of.... games except World of Tanks briefly but at the time it was poor with bigger tanks and more experienced people coming onto the server and giving you no chance to enjoy it. Also, it became clear it was going to be a pay to win game...though I honestly don't know if that actually came to fruition.
Anyone here play the World of games? What are they like now?

About seven years ago, I almost got a job with the World Of... people, as an instructional designer. That's the limit of my experience.
I *think* it was World of Tanks that Star was/is so heavily in to...wasn't it? He'd talked about it in the other forums and on the GH podcast a few times, if I remember right.

My friends and I play World of Tanks quite regularly on Xbone. I haven't spent a dime on it and have a good time. Am I uber powerful or even good at it... no. But with a bunch of friends, up to 5, you can form a platoon and play on the same side in matches. Helps the enjoyment quite a bit when you have backup.
I only play when my friends are on, but many of them play a lot more and so they are better and have more tanks. Only one or two have spent any money on the game.

Does anyone know - did the Germans nickname their aircraft - especially bombers - like American and British crews did?
-
The Bf-109s got nicknames- the D was Dora, the E was Emil, the F was Franz and the G was Gustav. Also, the 262 was the Schwalb, the Ju52 the Tante Ju, the Me410 the Horniss, the Ju87 the Stuka, the Me108 the Taifun, the Fw-190 the Wurger, etc, etc.
also, the Do-17 was the Flying Pencil.
-
No, sorry, I meant like Memphis Belle, or Lady Luck...that sort of nickname. Not the class name but individual bomber names, named by their crew/pilot.
-
Interesting question. I have never noticed such, but I'll have a look through some of my books.
-
I just had me a quick google and Erich Hartmann's 109G was nicknamed 'Lumpi' but I didn't run across any bomber nicknames. It could be that they just didn't paint the name on the plane in an easy-to-see area. I'd be surprised if it didn't happen at all though.
If you're looking to add a little flavor to an AAR of Amerika Bomber I'd say go ahead and name the plane anyway.
-
Nope, I've not found anything, although I have seen pictures of German tanks thus named.
-
The only bomber with a nickname that comes to mind was a Gotta bomber in WWI.
During the bombing of London, one of the Gothas had long snakes painted on the fusillage. It was called The Serpent Machine.
Think in German this has a certain rhyme.
-
I've gone through all my reference books and found not one, although many varied, and quite elaborate, unit marking there are in abundance, right down from Gruppe to Staffle level.
-
Thanks, gents. I had a feeling it just wasn't a normal thing among Germans as it was among Allied air crew. I'm certain from your feedback and just common sense, there were an exception or two.
-
The only one I found is an illustration in Profile Publications No.40 for the Me 109E-7 Trop, which shows an aircraft from III/JG 77 in Greece, 1941, which, apart from the unit badge, has a cartoon style pigs head under the cockpit. There is no text attached to this, and no explanation in the book.
-
Unit artwork was not uncommon in the Luftwaffe, often started by the unit commander and later added to other planes in the squadron. Per wikipedia, some examples would include Adolph Galland's Micky Mouse and Erich Hartmann's Tulip (which was used until recently by A Luftwaffe squadron until they transitioned over to Eurofighters)
-
I'd forgotten about Adolf Galland's Mickey Mouse insignia. I'd thought that was just his 'signature' icon, sort of like a graffiti tag.

Good read about the hard use of the B-1 fleet
“In my own opinion after seeing in excess of 20 years of B-1 operations, we’ve accomplished more than the aircraft was really ever intended for, even if it wasn’t used in the originally conceived methods. The B-1 has been maligned, underfunded, and often placed under the charge of those who managed it poorly and didn’t represent it well when it came to sustainment and actual preventative measures for fleet health."
"The aircraft has largely overflown its original estimated service life and as B-1 operations will eventually dwindle into the twilight, many people will never know the amount of effort poured into keeping it flying despite the conditions, which forced it’s handlers to keep moving the goalposts. We were promised better systems through upgrades only to have them fail and no spares available. Procurement and sustainment contracts for critical components often took years only to have those parts not fit or fail sometimes out of the box."

What an amazing find!
-
It still blows my mind to this day that humans could build such highly-engineered and complex aircraft from precise plans created on physical drafting tables.
-
Absolutely. I did engineering drawing once, and that was obviously in pre CAD-CAM days. I really used to enjoy the technical drawing aspect and still had some of the equipment until a few years ago.

I took some AutoCAD classes back in the mid-90s and even then it was pretty amazing to think people did that by hand. With precise drawing instruments, to be fair, but...BY HAND. :o

I recall reading something about German fighters on the Eastern Front, where the German aces would paint their aircraft. It got to a point where the Russians would purposefully go out of their way to avoid the German aces, so the Germans would put their newbies into those aircraft so they could get some solid experience, and the aces would go into unmarked aircraft. The Russians were always in for a rude surprise when they went after the unmarked aircraft.

Good point - how the heck did they do that, and land them on again.

The B-25s never had to land on the carrier. They either crashed or landed on mainland Asia.
-
Ah, right - I didn't know that.
-
The B-25s never had to land on the carrier. They either crashed or landed on mainland Asia.
Yes, they were supposed to launch much closer to Japan and have plenty of fuel to make it to unoccupied China but the task force spotted a suspected Japanese picket boat and couldn't risk being reported so the decision was made to go early, right at the 'estimated extreme range' on the Mitchells (which had almost anything removable done away with to save weight and add extra tanks). The hope was that the 'estimate' would turn out to be on the conservative side. For some planes it was... for others, not so much.

I don't think there was ever a plan for the bombers to return to Hornet. I doubt carrier landings were even feasible for B-25s. They weren't entirely sure about takeoffs working, especially for the first bombers on the shortened flight deck.
-
It was always supposed to be a one way trip. It wasn't feasible to get close enough to Japan to make it the half-way point and China was just a little further on so a better option. Had they been able to launch at the half way point then I'd guess that the planes would return to land on deck one at a time and then be quickly pitched overboard to clear the deck for the next one.
IIRC, there was an early option to have the Mitchells turn south after striking Tokyo so the crews could bail out near waiting subs but this was shelved as too risky to the subs to stay in a fixed area within Japanese controlled water that long. Also, the risk of interception by the Imperial Japanese fighters would be much greater since the Mitchells would be flying close to the Home islands much longer.
-
When, Jimmy Doolittle bailed out of his plane, it was pitch dark. He could not see where he was, or where his crew had come down.
In his account, he was at first happy to land in a liquid, but then realised he had landed in a manure pit.
One foot was on a solid bit, but feeling about, he could not locate another sturdy spot.
Rather than take a chance of toppli g into the muck and drowning, he spent the rest of the night as motionless as he could.
The next morning, two of his crew spotted him and pulled him out.
Asking him if he was alright, Jimmy Doolittle quietly said, "I'm shit faced."

The 4th of July flyover just flew over, perhaps within a mile of our house. There was a good assortment of our airborne arsenal. My wife asked me what the "batman" plane was, so I told her it was a B-2.
I sure do love the sound of jets.
-
I watched that on TV. It was great to see all those planes and quite a grand show even if the TV cameras kept screwing up their shots. I was hoping the Blue Angels would do one of their howling, tree-top level fly-overs full speed right over Trump and Melania. I bet Trump's hair still wouldn't move. :hehe:

There's an episode of the original Hawaii 5.0 where McGarrett (Jack Lord) walk by a jet airliner spooling up it's engines. His perfect hair gets blown all over the place and then settles back EXACTLY as it was, every strand in place.

A U.S. Navy Lockheed P2V-3C Neptune launches with "Jet-assisted take-off (JATO)" from the aircraft carrier USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVB-42) on 2 July 1951.
The early interim solution for a nuclear-capable “carrier based” bomber until the AJ Savage was ready. Twelve P2V-3Cs were converted, and while there had been plans to make them able to land aboard the one aircraft with a tail hook suffered severe structural damage during the shore-based testing and training. Thus, after a nuclear strike they would either have to land ashore or ditch. The Neptunes has to be craned aboard and until launch were a major headache: when parked forward only the port catapult could be used. Only the Midways were large enough for the beast, and as all were needed in the Mediterranean for potential nuclear strikes non saw service in Korea (two CVLs and eight CVEs were recommissioned as combat carriers for the conflict, I’d need to brush up on the number of Essexes brought back as this overlaps with early refits).
For a time the Neptunes and Savages served together as the latter had some serious teething troubles. For example, during FDR’s 1951 Mediterranean deployment six Savages and three Neptunes were ashore in Morocco just in case tensions heightened and they needed a nuclear strike. The Savages has too many problems to deploy aboard regularly and the Neptunes as mentioned caused problems, but they were nearby just in case, and there were many demonstration launches like this.

Test of a drone versus manned jet.
-
Kind of scary, really. I wonder if the era of drones in combat would make war more or less likely to occur? :worried:
-
Thinking about this brings up an old memory.
At the test range in Roosevelt Roads, PR, they had a huge wall display of the range. It was so retro looking that it was called the Buck Rogers screen.
Ships and planes would go on the range and be "attacked" by Firebee drones.
These drones we're controlled by an operator in booths along the back wall.
One time an F4 Phantom from the Ark Royal was to attack a drone that was simulating an attack on the carrier.
The Phantom pilot made a very shallow turn to get behind the drone.
Well those things had no human body on board and could turn on a dime.
All we could see on the display was the turns. They circled and circled with no real indication of telative positions.
Then the Brit exclaimed, "the bloody blokes behind me!"
Someone flipped on the lights and the range team gave the operator applause.
He just grinned.

I saw the one they did in May of 2015 (I think) and it was good. I was at Gravelly Point, which didn't provide the greatest view, but it was still good.
The bad news is that this Friday is supposed to be a day off for me, but I have to go in to the office. The good news is that my office is in Crystal City overlooking DCA, so I actually might get a great view of this.

Same here. My bedroom "skies" were patrolled by some of aviation's finest while the Bismarck, Yamato, Arizona, Enterprise and a number of scrappy warships kept my bookshelves safe.
-
I did tanks. With a few BB's and aircraft thrown-in for good measure. But mostly, tanks. Lots of tanks.
-
Yep, tanks for me as well. At one point I had Tamiya's 1/24 scale Tiger I, Panther and Jagd Panther.. The Tiger was an excellent model with a lot of internal detail.
-
I never got into tank modeling for some reason. I think I was simply too engrossed recreating the major fleet combatants of WWII or playing whichever Avalon Hill game was set up on the folding table in my bedroom.
-
I'm not sure having a bunch of tanks hanging from your ceiling creates quite the same effect
j/k, I built a fair share of tanks as well. In fact, about 10 years ago I felt nostalgic and bought a few kits to match some of the vehicles I was crewing at the time in WW2 OnLine. Never got around to building those though... :(

I haven't done a model since the Enterprise-D back in 1992 or so, just before I moved. I never had much patience with models before but this one I took my sweet time on; took me a month or so to put it together and carefully paint everything, even each and every window. I've had an itch to get some models lately but I've no place to put them, so. :(

When observers from USN went to see how the RN early in the war, they knew nothing of the planes.
One officer was shocked to see a swordfish flying into the wind, practically hovering with it's very low stall speed.
"Who builds those?"
"Faireys."
"Of course, they do."
Always wondered why the admiralty put a surface officer in charge of the carrier that Scharnhorst bagged. You would think they would want a CO thoroughly familiar with carrier ops, now that war began.

I live in the Tennessee Valley just below "Sand Mountain" (Yeah, I didn't name these things.), where we get a fair amount of Blackhawk and Chinook training traffic. But the most impressive thing I've seen before this was a line of four C-130s flying not more than a couple hundred feet over the edge of the bluff, make a hard left, and go down the river. But the valley is a couple miles wide here, so...
-
The so-called 'Mach Loop' in North Wales is used a lot for training, and there are lots of youtube vids of different aircraft flying 'The Loop'
We were on holiday is Scotland once around the Cairngorms, and saw a C130 doing something similar - it was actually flying in a valley below us.

Backfires are hardly stealthy. That scene isn't in the Sum of All Fears novel at all. It's just a poor rip-off of the 'Dance of the Vampires' carrier battle from Red Storm Rising.

Season 9 is okay, but it's totally unnecessary. It was a convoluted process to get a ninth season and a lot of the cast had already found other work. I read an interview with McGinley where he said they all thought the show ended with season 8, then he got a call telling him to show up for S9. He was still under contract so he went back to work.
The hospital was interesting. The production team had the run of the building and modified it however they wanted for shooting. The cast had their own suites right in the building which is unusual on most sets.
It's a great show and I am not a huge Zach Braff fan. He's talented, but that character on Scrubs was too effing whiny.

This is an old issue. They audited DoD 2 or 3 years ago, or they attempted to audit it.
As someone pretty familiar with DoD accounting systems and how money flows, and the games that are played, and this absolutely does not surprise me. But I also doubt that any large federal agency could successfully pass an audit.
Trying to make them pass an audit will have dubious benefit. It's going to require more and more minute record keeping, last-minute data-compilation tasks, and new, even more onerous restrictions. They may eventually declare victory and balance their checkbook, but it won't result in any real improvement. There is tremendous pressure to spend all the money on a very rigid schedule. That comes from Congress, and if I fell behind I'd get in trouble. I was told numerous times that it didn't matter what I spent the money on, as long as I spent it.
I'll also say that Congress has some guilt in this area. I had to deal with Congressional adds, where Congress throws money out to their districts like a drunk sailor *after* the budget has been balanced. That's bad enough, but we were not allowed to monitor this spending to ensure that we were getting something in return. We could not ask for a plan on what they were going to do with the money, interim reviews, or even a final report. We were only supposed to be a conduit, and if we slowed it down in the slightest, we'd get a call from Congressional Affairs.
Leave it to the USAF to screw up something that should be as simple as looking out a window.

I think this is also an old issue. I don't follow the KC-46, but I thought they have been working on a fix. And I don't think they look out a window anymore - I think it's all based on a camera. I got to fly the boom on a KC-135, and there I was truly looking out a window.

Good insights from the inside. Nothing is ever simple.
Thanks, TR.

It's an old issue with the KC-46 that has not yet been fixed. They don't look out a window on the 46, but the camera system doesn't work. It's going to be an even older issue since Boeing will start rolling out a fix in 2023.
Under a 2020 agreement with Boeing, the manufacturer is covering all the costs of developing and installing the RVS 2.0, but it won’t actually begin to be fitted to new-build aircraft until 2023, while retrofitting of previously delivered aircraft will begin a year after that.

The exuberance of youth.
I wonder if Mark Felton will ever make a video of my antics when my Royal Corps of Transport Sqn were on exercise in Salisbury Plain in South West England.
At the end of the exercise, all our 100+ vehicles were parked in a line. Late at night, probably around 10pm, I went along the line, taking jerry cans of diesel and put them in the back of my 8 ton TM. I then took the 8 tonner, drove out the area, headed along the A303, M3, M25, A1 and into Mansfield to see my darling - a distance of around 250 miles. The next morning, after "relations" had taken place, I called my unit and told them I was coming back.
I went back to the Sqn and was put under open arrest. When the unit got back to camp on the Sunday, I was up in front of the OC (officer commanding). I got 7 days RoPs (Restriction of Privileges) and fined £120 for the diesel I had used.
To this day, I do not understand why I wasn't jailed at MCTC (Military Correction Training Centre - which is 3 miles from my camp) and thrown out the army.
One lucky bastard.

I remember seeing a model of a lead assembly ship in a scale modeler magazine when I was very young. It was covered in polka dots and had less than standard national insignia. My immediate reaction was WTF? until I read the article by the modeler.
I have some aviation history books with some photos of those ships. A damned clever idea when you think about it.

Ok, I have to know. How many watts is the F-14's radar putting out? Are we talking microwave popcorn, or flaming death-beam?

We've twice been to the international air show at RAF Leuchars and seen LOTS of interesting aircraft. Also, in better times, we have the Sunderland Air show every year and we're on the flightpath for a lot of the aircraft since we are between the show area and Newcastle Airport, where some of the aircraft stay.. In 2019, the MiG 19 and Vampire flew together low over our house, much to my delight.

I don't know if you have access to these warbirds anytime - but they really are so stunning up close. They have a "flight path walk" where they are all lined up and you walk up and down in the morning before the show, just snapping beautiful pictures of them

And one of my favs
-
We have a pretty good airshow here at Offutt Air Force Base. It is usually an annual affair but with Covid and much needed runway work it has been cancelled for the last couple of years.
They bring in a lot of aircraft of all types. I think it depends on the aircraft owner on how up close an personal you can get. Most of the active duty US aircraft are just THERE for you to walk up to and look at. The one exception was the F-117 when it was here. It was cordoned off and guarded. Some of the cargo planes are open and you can walk through the cargo deck.
Duxford is on my bucket list. I'd like to get to a Paris air show as well.
Thanks for sharing the pix!

Careful of that one on top Dredd. It's looks like it might bite. :hehe: We've had some great Air Shows here too close by but airfield that put them on went commercial and so most have moved on elsewhere. But we did have the B-17, B-24, P-51 and Spitfire. And once the BF-109. The old shows used to include the C5A and C-130's and you could crawl around in almost all of them. Great stuff.

Once again, Mark Felton does not disappoint.
(Note the bit about air-to-air refueling- not new but IIRC, never done with such large aircraft.)
-
Not sure if this has been posted before, but I did not see it. I've always been fascinated by the story of the Lady Be Good, a B-24 bomber that was lost over the North African desert due to some tragic miscalculations. They ended up bailing out over the North African desert; one died when his parachute did not open but that would not be discovered for years. The others met up and thought they were only 100 miles from their base on the coast, but they were actually 440 miles. Slowly but surely, they could go no further, and all perished in the desert.
This video does a fantastic job of telling the story:

One comment and one question:

Good question. The Marines justified their aviation requirements because they needed to provide close air support to the grunts on the ground, not doing deep strike missions.
Otherwise that article didn't say much, except that they will need a lot of aerial refueling. The article cites an exercise last month where they flew from Miramar to Washington State. That doesn't sound very remarkable.
-
After a couple of key battles in WW2 when the Navy decided to go carrier-hunting instead of providing CAS to the Marines ashore, the USMC vowed that they would always control their own CAS.

HOW THE SPRUCE GOOSE WAS MOVED TO OREGON
why? what's the historical connection?
sorry, my question wasn't why post the article. My question was why should the Spruce Goose be moved to Oregon? It was built by Howard Hughes in Long Beach California. (I did take the tour when it first opened. ... not that far from the Queen Mary IIRC) From what I understand, it pretty much was overly ambitious for the time and pretty much a failure (I am sorry a "flight" that does not get out of ground effect does not qualify a successful flight test from my POV). A wooden massive seaplane ... building bigger and faster airplanes seemed to be the rich boy's pass time of the 40's - partially funded by the American taxpayer ... not that different from the rocket hobby of Bezos/Branson/Musk today.
So, people in the Long Beach area weren't flocking to view it anymore so they decided to move it to Oregon? I did not understand the connection between Oregon and the Spruce Goose. That is all.
Sorry if I offended.
-
No, not a problem at all. I was just being frivolous as is my want. No offence taken or meant. I stumbled across it and thought it was interesting enough to post here. Mind you, if I had realised that it would get the puns rolling, I may have not bothered. :-)

The Brisbane flyover brought to mind an incident from about 1970.
The Saratoga had an engineering pipe burst in Phaleron Bay, Athens. She ended up touching the bottom, the bay isn't that deep close to land.
The air wing had to fly off to Naples. The ship was bow in.
They catapulted the Phantoms off. They immediately had to go to full power in a turn to starboard to avoid the line of hotels along the water.
The Phantoms always dropped down right after clearing the cat shot, so it looked tremendously dangerous.
Those two, smoky engines gave enormous power (proving that even a brick could fly with enough power) and were loud. Thunderously loud.
Since the planes came close to those hotels, maybe eighty yards, the booming noise woke any late sleepers, and shook the buildings.
When they tried to homeport Destroyer Squadron Twelve in 1972, all the waterfront hotels said ,"Non militaire."

My dad was a red shirt (weapons) on carriers. I got to spend some time on carriers both as a kid and as an adult, and calling it a "ballet" is completely appropriate.
One of the most impressive things I've witnessed in my life is flight ops at night. And it's being conducted primarily by 20-something year old kids on a floating airport in the middle of the ocean.
My dad told me that on every cruise, at least one sailor would die. Some of it was just from natural causes when you have a couple thousand people on the ship, but he told me gruesome stories of guys walking into turning props, or falling overboard, or some other machinery accident.
-
And it's being conducted primarily by 20-something year old kids on a floating airport in the middle of the ocean.
that right there is the truly batshit crazy part of all of it
-
During WWII, the planes were guided in to land by the LSO, Landing Safety Officer. He was near the stern, right next to the arresting wires.
There was a net rigged a deckI below the flight deck for him to jump into when a plane was co.ing in to crash at the edge.
Not much talked about, but a number of LSOs missed the net.

I can see right through what they're doing there.

I expected someone to come back with a clever retort...but instead, we got you. ::)

Beggers can't be choosers. At least thar's what a beggar told me. I, 'Chose' to believe him.

It was funnier when the sign said "Wonder Woman's Jet".
-
That's because only Old Farts like us would get it. But, you're right. That would be funnier. My Brother came to visit recently. When he talked into his Apple Watch, I asked him, "Didn't Dick Tracy have one of those"? I thought he was going to hit me.

I never saw any 'components' comprising the "innards" so, where WERE 'Flying Squirrel' & 'Space Monkey housed/wheeled-run-?-!

A return of the iconic PBY Catalina.
Perfect for your island secret lairs.

I have been fortunate to see one at an airshow in the past. Great aircraft.

We saw it at RAF Leuchars and it came over here once when it was at the Sunderland Air Show, which, sadly, are no longer being held.
-
One of my favourite aircraft. The Short Sunderland.
-
One of my favorites as well! "The Porcupine".
I will watch this when I have some time.
I swear if I ever get over there I am looking up you and JD and we're going to Duxford.

Was overall disappointed with the Pacific. Too scattered.
Hoping this will have a good storyline.
-
Yeah - The Pacific wasn't my fav.
Seems like I have to get Apple TV at some point!
-
Thank you, besilarius. I will definitely check that out.
IMHO. Apple TV is still a pretty good deal as streaming services go. Waiting for new seasons of "Silo" and "Shrinking".

I read his book 'God is my Co-Pilot' when I was a teen. Good stuff.
