Does this mean he's pretty much done with Shadow Empire, then?  I hope not.

I don't think so.....

this 520-page hardbound full-color manual

Holy hell.  :o  That alone almost makes me want to get it, despite the game's price and high grognardi-ness levels.

If you can guarantee there will still be physical copies of the manual available by then, I'll be content to wait, sure.  :P

After buying the World in Flame manuals, I don't see the point in buying physical copies of game manuals anymore.  :-\

The first War in the East came with a hardbound manual as well, which I have. Is that now obsolete?

Partially, I miss the sheer novelty that paper manuals have become.  But generally speaking, I also genuinely prefer looking things up in a physical manual/rulebook (as opposed to googling/searching online).  I'm strange that way.

I'm the same. I work on a PC all day programming - the last thing I want to do is use a PC to read.

Also - regarding this game...I would love to want it - and I do - but I'm just very wary that I had War in the East and War in the West, both with hardbound manuals and at considerable expense - and I hardly played them. My concern would be the manual would sit with the other game manuals and the game would occasionally be installed and uninstalled several times.

Probably, but probably not to the point of being unusable.

I just submitted a First Impressions piece for the site on WITE2. I did not play WITE1 so I can't speak to any of the differences, but it's my understanding there's been a lot of improvements.

I'd say the WITE1 manual is better to have than nothing at all, but you'd need the new one if you want to explore all the nooks and crannies of WITE2...and there's a LOT of them.

I eyed WitE1 for a *long* time, but ultimately shied off -- not unlike my "relationship" with WitP:AE (and for a lot of the same reasons)...and now here I am, just about ready to pull the trigger on this one.  I simultaneously find monster wargames like these intensely intriguing, and utterly intimidating.
