Title: E3 is DOWN
Post by: Cyrano on March 11, 2020, 12:26:10 PM
I was feeling poorly about missing Origins.

I now think it well better than 50-50 that I will not, in fact, miss an Origins that actually happens.

Given the just released list of the nominees in the Historical Games category of the Origins Awards, I am completely convinced I'm not missing anything I would ever want to be a part of, even if it does happen.

Conflict of Heroes: Storms of Steel (3rd edition) | Academy Games | Gunter Eickert, Uwe Eickert
Pandemic: Fall of Rome | Z-Man Games | Matt Leacock, Paolo Mori
U-BOOT: The Board Game | Ares Games | Bartosz Pluta, Artur Salwarowski
Watergate | Capstone Games | Matthias Cramer

GAMA wouldn't recognize a wargame if it bit them on the ass and gave them COVID-19.

2 of those are defensible, but barely.  However, the category didn't exist 2 years ago, and they also brought back the Historical Minis category, so at least they're moving somewhat in the right direction.

Of course, we could create our own awards....

That list is an embarrassment.

That list is an embarrassment.

That is the understatement of the year.

I mean, GMT and Compass alone, let alone all the other awesomeness out there, should have set a blizzard of possibilities forth for this category. This was just laziness on their part.

QFT. I repeat my take from last year: Origins is not interested in our hobby. This list is overwhelming proof.

Now go look at the vendor list from WBC from last year.

And saying "look at Historicon's everything" is just plain cheating.

I think I half admire Harold's quixotic attempt to bring wargaming back to GenCon, but he's even dodging the name "wargame" to suck up to people that do.not.like.what.we.like.

Note:  this does not make them in any way bad, just horses for courses.
