As some of you may know, I go gaga for age of sail era naval warfare games. There are so many to choose from and all have their best qualities. Sadly, I cannot figure out how to ask multiple questions in one poll, but in this one, I'd like to get a feel for what type of game board layout people most prefer when playing a naval warfare board game. I know it certainly depends on the structure of movements and how pieces interact with one another, but in general, which type of board would you prefer?

* Square tiles like Fighting Sails
* Hexagon tiles like Flying Colors
* Triangle tiles like Naval Battle in Archipelago
* No tiles like Sails of Glory

If I had my druthers, it would be minis and no tiles, but for naval board games hexes do just fine.

Being able to Google shit better than your clients is a legit career skill.

Yeah, but even cardboard ships on a gridless surface is  better than on grids... I like playing Bismark and Jutland that way....

Yeah, but even cardboard ships on a gridless surface is  better than on grids... I like playing Bismark and Jutland that way....

Oh, I completely agree and those counters are large enough that it works well to play with a grid.

Being able to Google shit better than your clients is a legit career skill.

Triangles? No idea. I didn't pay enough attention to the movement rules of NBiA. It was new to me, but thought I'd include the option.

As you likely surmise, I like big, open, unmarred sea with minis.

Play "Flying Colors" or "WS&IM" any time, though.

For once in my life I seem to be in the majority - griddless by preference, but hexes for smaller footprint games.

I actually don't really like games.

Interesting, what about maybe if it is just a small duel of 1-2 ships per side? Using a small map with hexes could be better, but provide a gridless map for fleet battles?

Certainly workable. Generally, if I'm just doing a small engagement I'll play Sails of Glory, so that's gridless again. Most of the later period stuff I've played has also been minis and an open map. I would see hexes being of great use for a more operational scale game, though.

I actually don't really like games.
