Title: HUMANKIND
Post by: bbmike on August 19, 2019, 08:11:29 PM
Finally, after what seems like forever, someone is making a Civilization-like game!
The someone in this case is Amplitude:

HUMANKIND (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1124300/HUMANKIND/)

I'm really looking forward to this one.  :bigthumb:

Yay?

I'll try to put it in perspective for you. Let's say that there was a boardgame designer called Cid Grier. Cid Grier designed a boardgame at the strategic level covering the entirety of WWII 28 years ago called Mobilization. You love Mobilization because you love WWII boargames, especially at the strategic level. Now, for whatever reason, Mobilization was the only strategic level boardgame covering the entirety of WWII in the entire world. For 28 years. Then, one day, a company called Grampitude says, "we're gonna make a strategic level boardgame covering the entirety of WWII". After 28 years, finally, someone else is going to offer a new take on a boardgame covering the entirety of WWII at the strategic level.

So, yeah. Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Agreed. One of the reasons why I can't wait for this to come out.

I'm cautiously optimistic.

For some reason, I've not been able to get into Amplitude's games thus far.  I bounced hard off off both Endless Space titles (despite really wanting to like them), and Endless Legend just never interested me in the first place.

Humankind, though, I admit has me somewhat excited.  I've been waiting over a decade for a decent AAA historical 4x title, and I think this could be it.  It's about time someone gave Firaxis some genuine -- and desperately-needed -- competition.

Post by: bbmike on August 21, 2019, 06:22:05 AM
I've also struggled to get into Endless Space (1 & 2) but Endless Legend is a great game. It took a couple of tries to get into it but once figured it out it was worth it. I hope this game builds on EL more than ES.

Begin as Ancient Egypt, then evolve into the Romans, the Khmers, or perhaps the Vikings.

This part is intriguing. One thing about the Civ games (excuse me, Mobilization) that bothers me a bit is how Civs are named the same thing for their ENTIRE existence. Such as, the Americans - you're able to start the American Civ in 4000BC and...well, you're Americans through the ages. If this is hinting that you can 'evolve' or change your Civ into some other thing, that might make things more interesting.  (Not sure if I'm making sense, but when do I ever...)

 >:D

Go to Amplitude and apply for the Humankind OpenDev program. Still time to get in on the next round of scenarios to test.

This first one is a 45 minute special made scenario to get player feedback on certain aspects of the game. And it's NOT behind a NDA. So when I get a chance I can post some pics and tell about what's going on.
But it's time limited too, only available to play from Last night to Monday sometime.
Good thing my 2 week vacation starts now!

Good grief, $50.99 USD??  And as the pre-order price (regular is $59.99 USD)??!  :o

Sega must be feeling awfully big for its britches on this one.  It'll be interesting to see how well the game does at release, and whether it can truly compete with the Civ franchise or not.

Go play the free scenario. Seriously. It's freaking awesome, even though I haven't a clue what I'm doing. So many choices....  :o

Just finished playing... waaaay past my bed time. The scenario is only 100 turns long but there's just so much to choose to do it takes a long time to play. No more hitting the end turn button just to get to the next turn.

Very Civ like but nothing like Civ.

Explorminate takes a look at the OpenDev demo available on Stadia:

While it's still early days, Humankind appears to be deeper than Amplitude's previous games.  Setting aside any jokes regarding low bars and the clearing thereof, I'll admit I've gone from having mentally written this one off, to putting it back on my "maybe" list.  :fingerscrossed:

Yes/no/sort of.

Long story short, the site has pivoted to now just doing a weekly podcast discussing various 4x games, genre-related topics, and/or conducting the occasional interview.  No more articles, reviews, etc.  The Steam forums remain open and active, though not nearly as much as before.  (Our 4x forums here are now seeing close to the same level of activity, for example.)

2nd video is up.

Looks like a few of the options in the diplomacy screen could be improved for clarity's sake, but still looking pretty good overall.

One thing I noticed in the previous video is that recruiting military units costs you population, a feature that I see in very few other games (Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes is one of the only ones I'm aware of that also does this).  Hopefully it helps act as a check/balance against civilizations becoming too military aggressive.

I also appreciate the little touches, like zooming in and seeing people walking around your cities.  It definitely helps make the world come alive, and adds immersion.

The Open Dev scenarios have been closed down for a while now. On one can play them.

The demo scenario, different thing all together, is only available on Stadia, and only for a week so get playing fast!

There is nothing on Steam at all.

What the Sam Hill is Stadia?

Stadia is Google's attempt to enter the cloud computer gaming market. They announced it during the Game Developers Con in 2019, I think. Here are some articles:

Here's an article from March of 2019 with the annoucement: Google jumps into gaming with Google Stadia streaming service, coming “in 2019” (https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2019/03/google-jumps-into-gaming-with-google-stadia-streaming-service/)

Here's something a bit more current: Google Stadia’s free demos could prove the value of game streaming) (https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2020/10/google-stadias-free-demos-could-prove-the-value-of-game-streaming/)

Here's an updated review from IGN: Google Stadia Review (2020 Update) (https://www.ign.com/articles/google-stadia-review)

Here's an interesting article about cloud gaming in general: Cloud gaming’s history of false starts and promising reboots (https://www.polygon.com/features/2020/10/15/21499273/cloud-gaming-history-onlive-stadia-google)

Got a wee bit carried away there with linking to info.  :)  Hope that helped.

Title: Re: HUMANKIND
Post by: Barthheart on October 27, 2020, 06:45:05 AM
I enjoyed it very much. Seems deeper than Civ, but maybe that’s just because it’s different.
I very much like the combat system. Armies can have many units/types in them as they move around the map, but when combat happens it becomes 1 unit per hex style combat. Terrain height gives advantage in defence and extra range for ranged units.
Diplomacy so far seems more interesting and choices seem to change a bit as eras pass.
Cities and territory control is very different. The choice between few cities covering large areas or lots of smaller cities is an interesting dynamic that the demo only hints at.
Game is great to look at.
Overall the game is a fresh take on Civ style game play.
April is a long ways away....

Title: Re: HUMANKIND
Post by: Martok on October 27, 2020, 11:27:41 AM
Appreciate your thoughts, Barthheart

There's definitely some nice-looking systems in this game.  I'm especially intrigued by the notion of choosing between fewer, larger cities, and many, smaller ones.  It makes me wonder if "playing tall" might actually be a viable strategy in Humankind.  (For now, I remain skeptical, but won't rule out the thought entirely.)

This is easily my most anticipated (PC) game. That is all.

I'm jealous.  The top of my personal list is Distant Worlds 2, which doesn't even have a release date yet.  :(

Title: Re: HUMANKIND
Post by: Barthheart on October 27, 2020, 01:37:54 PM
Yeah, going "tall" in Humankind is different than Civ even.

In Humankind each city occupies/controls an entire territory. You can then build outposts in other territories to access the resources before building cities there. This is nice.
But, these outposts can then be either absorbed into an adjoining city territory, making the city territory larger, or be converted into a city itself.
The larger the territory a city occupies the more spaces/hexes it can develop for resources.

So conceivably, you could build a very large single City-State by just joining all outposts to your capitol. Or build a nation with lots of cities.

Also, units, scouts and military, use up a citizen points from the city they are built in. So you can't build too many with out depleting the abilities of your city. So large cities can grow pops faster an therefore could make more units, but they can only do one thing at a time - develop plots OR build units OR develop the city.

The demo was limited to 100 turns and/or 2 Eras, so it was hard to tell which works better or even if there is a "best" way to play. Probably somewhere in the middle, large central city with smaller outliers.

I can see a very cool balancing act developing.

Title: Re: HUMANKIND

Same basic premise. Take a prehistoric tribe, explore the world, learn technology, build cities to claim space, and fight to hold it or take more.
Human kind uses a lot of the same idea that Endless Legends uses for city construction/territory control and combat mechanisms.
They have a different take on evolving your culture through time in that you are not just a single culture for all time. You can blend other cultures into your to become something new.

Really looking forward to it.

When you played the demo, Vance, did you get any sense of how far along (or not) the AI was?  I realize the game is still in beta, it's just that Amplitude is a bit notorious among some crowds for having poor AI in their products (Endless Legend in particular gets a lot of flack for this).

Title: Re: HUMANKIND
Post by: Barthheart on November 18, 2020, 05:25:43 PM
The demo was pretty limited but the AI does know how to fight properly. Using heights and combined arms well.
The AI Civs seem to be expanding  and developing well, but again being so limited a scenario one didn’t get to interact with them too much.
Title: Re: HUMANKIND
Post by: Martok on November 18, 2020, 06:52:46 PM
Fair enough.  Still, it sounds hopeful.  I would also like to think that given this is Amplitude's first "big" game (in their own words), that they'll devote more time & resources to making sure the AI is a decent opponent.

Some folks will undoubtedly be bummed by the news, but I think it's a good move on Amplitude's part.  If you're truly intent on challenging the Civ series, you don't want to release an unbalanced & unpolished mess.

Hard to believe it will be a Civilization killer based on the 4 minutes I spent with the preview version. That said, I am hopeful they have it figured out now.

Yeah, after that pcgamer review Humankind spent about 5 minutes in my purchase cart before I put it back on the shelf. Looks promising but I want to make sure I'm not buying a broken game first. And yes, I admire my self-restraint   8)

self-restraint

you're gonna need to offer some sort of definition or reference point for this term

I'm not sure anyone around here knows what it is   :dunno:

Another preview article:

I go back & forth on this game so much.  I see a lot of things I like, some things not so much, and other things I'm just not sure what to make of.  Ultimately, though, I know the fact that Humankind is being developed by Amplitude will cause me wait a long time before I even think about buying this, no matter how much it might appeal to me.  :-\

What I’ve played of it so far I think it’s a good game... not great yet but a good solid game.
It’s very different from Civ and so has taken me some getting used to it.
The mixing of cultures is so different, and there are so many combinations, that just that aspect is, for me, the hardest aspect to get a grip on.
Very much looking forward to the full release and I know Amplitude will support the game for a long time.

I've not gotten that impression, no.  But then, I've not been following the game as closely as some of the folks here, so take my words with a grain of salt.

It's perhaps worth noting that the review *isn't* written by Rob, who's an admitted Amplitude fanboy.  He does add his own thoughts at the end, but it appears Steve honestly enjoys the game as well.

It’s not at the top of my purchase list, stellaris dlc and Elysium coming first but im struggling with something after reading the reviews

In Civ I am Caesar, I am pharaoh and whilst not deeply RPG and immersive I still like to think in diplomacy and war ‘yeah that’s right, im frikking XXXX you’d better run’

But there doesn’t seem to be that fixed foundation here, I’m rome, then I’m Egypt, then I’m England - and I don’t think I like that

Did anyone bite on this? If so, what are your opinions.

I have it and have been playing the last few days. Still early but here's what I think so far:

Great looking game, better than Civ.
Much deeper game than Civ. You can play shallow and keep hitting the end turn button but you will be missing a lot.
Micro-management a bit higher in some aspects, lower in others.
I like the breakout battles, like Endless Legend. It's like mini tactical battels that make you think about army composition. Terrain makes a difference. City sieges are interesting.
Still working out cultures changes through eras... like it but can be jarring to start as Zhou, then become Greek, then Umayyad. You can just stay as one culture for the whole game though, need to try that.
LOTS of reading, at least the first time through. They have spent a lot of time building story and history into the game. Great stuff in my opinion.
Diplomacy is deeper than Civ and more nuanced too.
Wars are different too. Your people's War Support is very important and you need to drive down your enemies to win. Yu do this by taking territory and winning battles. Just started my first so not much to tell here yet.

In short, I like it a lot. It's seems slow going, on regular speed, because of all the reading and all the choices in city building, army building, civic choice, religion choices, exploration, diplomacy, etc. etc. But it's not boring or dragging. Very immersive, for me.

^I'd agree with most of that except the jury is still out on diplomacy for me. I'm not convinced (yet) that it's any better than Civ, it just seems like better smoke and mirrors.
As for the era culture changes- I don't like it. I was hoping you could pick one Civ to stick with through the entire game and choose/compete for cultural "add-ons" as you progress. In other words, you would be the Romans the entire game but might not look anything at all like the Romans we know and love.

Overall, great game so far.  8)

I've not really heard much in the way of "huge" changes over Civ. Not really enough to make me jump in. I'll wait on a sale - as I am doing for F1 2021 and a couple of other games (City of Gangsters is on my list)

The Fabius Maximus update finally dropped last week, along with Humankind's first "event", the "Día de los Muertos":

https://www.games2gether.com/amplitude-studios/humankind/blogs/789

Quote
a quick summary of what it contains:

You can set opponents in the new game lobby to pick a random avatar from your collection
You can customize the colors used for empires and subtitles (e.g. diplomacy dialog or the narrator)
You can choose the abundance of strategic and luxury resources when creaing a new game
    Several cultures have been rebalanced
Expansionist era stars are now easier to achieve in the early game on large maps
The expansionist ability is now free and can be used on enemies at war
Food gains and mammoth strength in the neolithic have been adjusted to slow down early growth
Population food consumption and district costs have been increase to slow down excessive growth
Several Civics have received new effects
Added varied unit art to improve immersion
And of course, lots of bugfixes

On top of that, the mod tools beta was released a couple days later:

Also, this is listed on the store page as one of the more helpful reviews.  I'd be curious if others here share this persons opinion.

Quote
Review after the first playthrough of a Game from a player with 1000 hours in Civilization 5&6:

The the first 50 rounds felt like the best part of the game. Its really cool to run around as a tribe and settle your first cities. Its also the part, where microing felt really neccesary. Unlike you do in Civ, in Humankind you dont have builers. You build all your modernisations in your city centers. This means with a huge construction base, you get improe your empire really fast.

I played with Egypt as my first culture, who turned out to be very OP. My starting position was also very lucky, after eating my close neighbor, i could settle half of the biggest continent and island hop to the new world very early. Influence usually limits your expansion speed, but with my huge production base, I easily managed to be +3 over my city limit the whole game. As a result expanding was posible and in a very peaceful way. You could also say boring.

In the mid game, improving my city became very repeative. Lining up production orders and hunting barbarians was the main part of the gameplay. In Civ 6 planing your citys district by district is one of its strongest points imo. Adjacency bonusses are existing, too, but it feels less important, because you are building so many of them.

Religion, trade, culture/influece do exist, but it doesnt felt like it is really important. You build the stuff to push the number, but the influence on the gameplay is realative low. I had the biggest religion in the world, but Im not sure if I had any benefits from it.

The lategame was kind of strange. My big neighbour entered the last chapter of the game a couple rounds before I did, but I dont think he was even close to threaten my win. With my big empire and a fitting culture, I pumped out ridiculous amounts of science, finishing all the endgame techs in 1 round each. It was now a race between my Mars programm and researching all future techs, which also wins you the game.

There are many aspects of the game I had no oppurtunity to have a look on. War against a nation as strong as me with modern weapons wont happen, because I win the game 10 rounds after finishing the first modern military techs. My only neighbor (my biggest rival) and me were allies since day 1.

You have some kind of influence on other players cities, but I didnt saw any way to benefit from this. Also trade and luxuries didnt impact the game very much. I build it, earn the yields and thats it.

So, why I'm still recommending the game?

Everyone who played Civ 6 or Civ 5 vanilla knows how awefull they were on launch. Key elements of the game were totally missing. 3 years of proper developement and Addons made it the great games they are today.

I really see this way for Humankind, too. The potential in the game is huge. The atmosphere beats Civ already, because you are really feel like watching a civilisation forming over millenias. Yes, many features need to get a more significant impact and to interact better. It would be also nice if the cultures would play more different in terms of gamemechanics and unique stuff, because it seems like they simply have boosts for either science, gold, production or influece.

Balancing is a problem, where much work has to be done.

Overall i dont recommend this game for players who are completly new to the genre. Buy Civ 6, Platinum Edition has a great price and its definetly the better game in its current state. But remember it took 3 huuuuge Addons to bring it to this point.

For those who are used to the genre, its a really fresh impression, it has much atmospheric rollplay, cool ideas and is looking very nice. If the devs make it right, they can easily turn Humankind in a game that equals the quality of Civ 5&6. Buy it cheap, play a few games, let it alone for some fixes and Addons and watch it improve.

Rating 7/10

Yeah, mostly. I'm a little more positive of the current game than he is but it does need some more depth to certain parts.

The misspellings and word destruction in reviews on any given Steam page usually give me too much of a headache to dive too deeply into them.

I pulled the trigger last night on this after finding it on sale on Fanatical (https://www.fanatical.com/en/game/humankind-digital-deluxe-edition).

I only had time to play it a bit last night, but I like what I see. I'm going to enjoy figuring things out - I'd rather play to learn than watch a bunch of videos. I'll do the latter if I get stuck trying to figure something out.

Apparently there's a fairly major problem with the "Día de los Muertos" event that dropped alongside the Fabius Maximus update earlier this month.  Sounds like Amplitude screwed up pretty badly, and a lot of folks are upset:

Question on cities and outposts. In the early game, us it better to get two cities early or one city with one or more attached outposts?

Looking at a couple of different articles on the build city/attach thoughts.  It seems like two maybe three attachments is the sweetspot.  It makes some sense.  In order for Outposts to build improvements, they require influence, a city uses industry.  The downside though, is that a city can have a single build queue.  So at some point, you want a second city just to have the additional build queue.

Overall I'm liking what is there.  But there are balancing issues that need to be looked at.  Civs are getting into the Medieval period before 1 AD, I'm into the Classical error, but haven't invented the wheel yet.  I also think the independent nations (think city states) that popup can be a little too powerful.

I do like the use of influence to claim more lands, and I love the ability to link outposts to a city.  This is, in my mind, forming provinces.  I would like to see a city get an additional build queue for adding outposts to a city.

Have they added the option to keep the same civilization for the entire game yet?

That's always been an option.

The purpose of being able to change Civs is that you can take advantage of different Civ traits in the different eras.  What you cannot do is be in the modern era, and pick an classical Civ, you can only pick either your current Civ or one of the available modern era Civ.
Title: Re: HUMANKIND
Post by: bbmike on February 25, 2022, 12:32:20 PM
Really? Every time I enter a new era I'm forced become a new Civ. How do I keep the same name?
Title: Re: HUMANKIND
Post by: Barthheart on February 25, 2022, 01:25:45 PM
You can re choose the same Civ. Just highlight who you are and you will see the option. You don’t get any new “advancements” but all your fame accomplishments are increased by 10% for each era you remain the same.
Title: Re: HUMANKIND
Post by: bbmike on February 25, 2022, 04:36:08 PM
Meh, that's disappointing. It would be nice to have the option to add those "advancements" to your custom Civ that doesn't change its name every era. I hate the "Oh good, you Egyptians made it out of the Neolithic Era! Now you're Mayans!" thing.  ::)
Title: Re: HUMANKIND
Post by: Barthheart on February 25, 2022, 05:27:22 PM
The way I play is to choose geographically close civs as I advance.

They have said they are working on something where you keep your original Civ name but still choose form the new cultures that become available.

Empire Names in the Ibn Battuta Update

https://www.games2gether.com/amplitude-studios/humankind/blogs/823

Title: Re: HUMANKIND
Post by: Barthheart on June 29, 2022, 09:50:18 PM
Yeah.... don't get yer hopes up too high... quote from the article:
Quote
“Immersive Player Names” may actually be a more accurate name for the feature. Giving consistent names to the empires in Humankind honestly turned out more difficult than expected, and we went through several iterations looking for a version that worked well in all supported languages. In the end, we decided to move the spotlight from the empires to the avatars themselves.

So, why is this important? Well, while changing and adapting your culture to the shifts in your situation is a core part of the Humankind experience, it could honestly get pretty confusing (as many of you were quick to point out). “The huns have declared war on me? The who? Oh, they used to be...” And referring to the other players as “the green empire” or “that pink $#?@!” isn’t much fun, either, and robbed the avatars of a lot of their personality, as they were just not very present while playing.

Now the game will focus on the avatar name for most interactions (with their culture usually added in brackets), so you should feel much more like you are interacting with the same leaders throughout your game, rather than a string of different cultures. You’ll probably notice this most with the various notifications, where you don’t get the benefit of seeing the other avatar as you do on the diplomacy screen. Now it’ll be much easier to keep track of who is who and what they’re up to if they’re properly addressed by name.

So not fixed names for your empire after all... what a load of crap.  :censored:
