Title: Emperor of the Fading Suns now available on GOG!
Post by: Martok on October 20, 2020, 02:47:13 AM
I gotta admit, I did not see this coming.  I shan't complain, though!  :D

Now here's hoping for a proper sequel...

You think i may like it? Or do i have to read a 300 page manual first....(don't have the time to do that anymore)?

Nice!

I have a boxed copy of EotFS but have had trouble getting it to run on later Windows versions. A few years ago  I tried a few rounds on my old pentium laptop but that had it's own issues and now no longer works. I've been considering fixing up an old Netvista all-in-one and installing Win98SE just to give the game another try. Hopefully the GOG release fixes the issue and saves me the trouble.

You think i may like it? Or do i have to read a 300 page manual first....(don't have the time to do that anymore)?

I have not actually had a chance to play it much (see above) but it has been talked about for a while in positive terms. One thing I do recall hearing is that there are some glitches with the AI.

Now here's hoping for a proper sequel...

Oh, and there were a couple of really good mods for this game. I hope they are still around out there on the interwebs.

I hope the mods work with the GOG version.  I used to play the Hyperion mod but never managed to finish a game before getting bogged down in the micromanagement.  Never tried the other big mod (reality? I think).

For whoever's interested, this article (https://strategyfrontgaming.com/emperor-of-the-fading-suns-retrospective/) takes an in-depth look at EofFS, including both its strengths and weaknesses.  (Sounds like the game's biggest problems are dodgy AI and micromanagement, as SDR noted.)  It's a great read, and made me especially keen to try the game, despite its obvious flaws.

He also lists the three main overhaul mods for Emperor of the Fading Suns (Hyperion, Nova, and Emperor Wars), along with links and brief descriptions of each.  I honestly recommend go checking it out!

You think i may like it? Or do i have to read a 300 page manual first....(don't have the time to do that anymore)?

Having played around with the game a bit last night, I'd say newcomers to the genre would struggle to learn it, but that anyone who has played 4x and/or grand-strategy games for years (like we have) will find it familiar enough.  Fortunately, however, EotFS also includes a set of tutorials, which appear to do a fairly decent job of teaching you the game.

[Casts Greater Thread Resurrection]

For those who didn't read the blurb on this week's Tuesday NewsDay, Holistic Design is currently beta-testing a new patch for the game:

https://www.holistic-design.com/emperor-of-the-fading-suns-wants-you/

I know it's too much to actually hope for, but I'm crossing my fingers that -- among other things, the update add/improves the AI.  That would be incredible.  :D

I really love this game, even if the ai is questionable.  Nothing else merges space and ground battles in a TBS quite like this one.

The only one negative I have for EotFS is they had to make it such that factions take turns ruling galactic councils and the inquisitors randomly kill your science institutes.  Really bums me out and thus I don't play the game as often as I theoretically should.

^  A sequel/remake that addressed issues such as this would be fantastic.

I recommend buying this game only if it is on sale for less than $10 (or it's equivalent in your monetary system).  There definitely is about 5 hours of good game play and even more if you can stomach the flaws I pointed out.

Did someone type 'Ghost Rider'? Man that takes me back. I also have a boxed copy that I bought from Son of Montfort, also at Ye Olde Place.

The game is currently selling on GOG for $5.99, which is around £5 if I'm not mistaken.  At that price, I'd say it's worth getting.

Well, if you delve into techs that have been proscribed by the church, you can get into genetic engineering and make commando assassin units with stealth camo.  I'm sure you could "alter" the camo (and the unit gfx).

Not patches, but there are a couple mods that still get recommended quite a bit.  One is the "Emperor Wars" (https://sites.google.com/site/emperorwarsfadingsuns/home/emperor-of-the-fading-suns-emperor-wars---reality-mod---downlao) mod, and the other is the "Hyperion" (https://hyperion.twarriors.com/hyperion.html) mod.

I seem to recall that Emperor Wars is the more "standard" mod, with its primary aim being to improve the vanilla game and fix/balance things as best it can.  In contrast, Hyperion is a bit more exotic and/or for more "hardcore" players, though I admittedly forget the details as to how/why that is.

The general consensus seems to be that ideally, you should play with one of the above mods (it's one or the other -- they're mutually exclusive)...providing that you can get it installed.

I recall installation being somewhat tricky -- and that was the Emperor Wars mod, which I'm pretty sure is the easier of the two.  By most accounts, both mods *do* markedly improve the game once either of them is installed, but doing so can be a bit of a process.

It's official!  Twenty-five years after the game first released, the 1.5 patch has dropped:

https://items.gog.com/emperor_of_the_fading_suns/emperor_of_the_fading_suns_changelog.pdf

Due to the numerous improvements the patch makes, GOG now lists the game as Emperor of the Fading Suns Enhanced

https://www.gog.com/en/game/emperor_of_the_fading_suns

Feels a bit grandiose to me.  But then, how often does a developer release  a major patch for a game that came out a quarter-century ago?  :D

Sounds like this patch isn't just a "one-and-done", either.  The devs had this to say on the EotFS Discord:

Quote

It's nice to see how active all the comments are! One thing to note, is that we are going to continue to work on improving the game. The tentative plan is for a release before the end of the year for a V1.51 if there are any issues that are preventing people from playing or to fix / improve some existing features that don't require a signficant amount of effort.

We then plan to get back together early in January to begin development of V1.6. The 3 most important things for V1.6 right now are:

1. Improve the user interface by providing in-game information for the various DAT files. A lot of players during the beta test mentioned a desire to have more information presented in game.

2. Improve the AI - most likely a complete rewrite of the AI.

3. Fix any remaining crashing bugs, fix issues with the implementation of new features / any remaining issues with MODding.

Note that everyone on the team is working on it because of our love for the game. We're always looking for new people that would like to contribute in some way, shape, or form and if you would like to join the EFS development team, please contact @HDIAndrew. If you have programming experience in C++, we're especially looking for people to help in this area.
Also, if you are not on GitHub, you can go here: https://github.com/HDIAndrew and submit any problems or issues that you have playing the game.

Also, @Framer is working on a "rebalance" mod that will essentially fix the largest issues with the standard DAT files - we plan to put that in the V1.51 update at the end of the year so that the general playing experience out of the box, without MODs, is better than what it is today.
Consider this a very fluid time with EFS - based on feedback with the V1.5 patch and additional player involvement, we're going to try to make it better and better. Thanks, everyone, and enjoy playing!

Lastly, here is the current list of outstanding issues that still need to be worked on: https://github.com/HDIAndrew/EFS/issues/78

An improved/rewritten AI would be absolutely amazing.  Given that was one of the single biggest criticisms about this game -- if not *the* biggest -- this could literally be a game-changer.

I realize none of this will happen overnight, but it's great to have something to look forward to!  :D

Good news! I installed the GoG 'Enhanced' edition (1.5) and after turning off the video setting in EFS.INI it ran without any issues.

I keep forgetting to mention it, but the new patch released back in February:

https://www.gog.com/forum/emperor_of_the_fading_suns/new_patch_for_emperor_of_the_fading_suns_enhanced

Quote
What are the Main Changes?

* We have reduced how aggressively the AI builds new structures and units on its worlds.

* Units have been rebalanced for cost and effectiveness. This means that units requiring higher levels of technologies are more dangerous, and some starting units take longer to build. This also increases the value of combined-arms tactics.

* Most technologies take longer to research and require you to build (and protect) more labs.

* We have doubled the number of relics you can find in ruins.

* The combat screen now displays more of the combat modifiers in each encounter.

The dev has also continued a LP with the new patch that he started a while back, with the latest episode having just posted (actual play/commentary begins around the 16:00 mark):

Like age of rifles I know nothing of this game other than the love and respect it receives from those that do

Is it a stable, working game that’s sits happy on windows 10 or does it need lots of support and jiggery pokery to play it

And what is it about it?

Runs fine on my aged Win 10 machine.  I just updated my Gog version of this game to the latest patch but haven't had a chance to dive in and try it out.

There is no other space 4x game that is turn based, has both space and land combat (which is also turn based!), and is a logisticians dream to play if you're into shuffling raw materials around the galaxy to feed your war machine.

All of this and the atmosphere of the game has a somewhat familiar air to it, almost like a cross between medieval times and WH40K.

In this world you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer.  I have overcome the world.

Personally, the game has always given me a bit more of a Dune than 40k vibe, though I can also see the latter.

I haven't played EotFS enough to gush about its logistics like W8taminute.  As he already mentioned, however, the game is practically unique in having both space and land combat, AND done in a fairly interesting way.  I also second his statement about the atmosphere/immersion factor; it's surprisingly good.

Got stuck in a number of you tube lets plays where the assumption is you know what’s going on, the lore, how to even navigate the UI but after a few googlings I have found the original manual that comes with a bit of a  tutorial game so I’m going in this weekend - from what I’ve seen so far send a search party Sunday afternoon

Out of inspiration from all this talk about the game I fired it up over the weekend.  Forgot how much of a 'just one more turn' factor this game has despite the clunky UI.

I installed the latest update on the GOG version of EoFS and did notice some subtle quality of life changes that help a lot.  The main difference I noticed was that wars do not start for no reason at all but that could be because I'm playing on medium difficulty.
