I bought the first one and could never get the hang of it. I bought the second one because "new!" and could never get the hang of it. Come to think of it, yeah I probably will buy the third one. (http://www.aarcentral.com/emoti/gaah.gif)

I'll be interested to see what the differences are between CK2 and CK3. If I don't think there is anything significant, then I will wait awhile to pick it up.
-
Don't mention Deus Vult. I did it once but i think I got away with it.

I agree on waiting. I still haven't picked up Imperator: Rome. I can wait until it's 50% or more off.

The screenshots look cool, but I tend not to buy most computer games until they go on sale anymore. I only just picked up TW: Warhammer and Warhammer II this weekend.
I did like CK2.

Yeah if this is like every other Paradox grand strategy game. You might as well mark your calendar for five years from now and save up the $20 to by the entire collection after they pumped out all of the numerous DLCs.
OMG I'm turning into an old curmudgeon! Bob does the old man urge to rant and rave about everything lessen with the passage of time?

Oh my
My first question would be if they had faith in all the dlc for CK2 - surely the ideas therein should be incorporated in the new edition - I’ll probably buy but hope it’s not a wash rinse repeat of the last 7 years whilst they add so much extra game on a base game that can’t handle it
It does look grown up and sexy now though

Lol. Yeah probably. Will finally start to play Crusader Kings 2 first!
-
I finally started playing CK2 again the last couple days. It's fascinating stuff, but I freely admit I wouldn't mind a tutorial that completely held my hand through the first couple years. Talk about your steep learning curves (and this is supposed to be one of Paradox's more accessible games?!)... :-\

Actually, i think it's one of the most complex games, at least, that's what i remember from playing the first one. I would say Europa Universalis 2 and Stellaris are the most accessible. I have a lot of respect for Crusader Kings 2 and will take the time to learn.

I agree Stellaris is probably Paradox's most accessible game (at least of those produced in-house). I do think the changes in the 2.2 update needlessly increased the learning curve, but it remains relatively easier to get into.
I can't comment on EU2, as I don't own it. I do own EU4, however, and some day I plan to tackle that one (although at the rate I'm going, I'll probably be retired before I get around to doing so :P ).

This is one area where (based on preview stuff) they seem to have finally sunk some time and resources in CK3. I'm looking forward to that, because I never felt like I had a clue what I was doing in 2.

Picked this up yesterday, but haven't fired it up yet as I have a good of Stellars going right now.
-
I keep periodically dabbling in CK2, but that UI...uff-da.
I love the art style, the music, the dialogue, the text descriptions, etc. -- the atmosphere and sense of immersion is fantastic. But good gods, the game is *not* user-friendly.
-
Martok, when I leaned it, I just had to go in and play a few game years concentrating on leaning one or two parts of the game and how they work with the other parts I had learned. When I first started a game, I would save. So when I felt comfortable with what I was trying to learn, I'd restart. Of course, not everything would work out the same, but it worked for me to learn the mechanics of the game.

I'm still on the fence about getting this before the sale is up or hold out for a better sale later in the year.

From some things I've read CKIII is suppose to be much better with the UI and especially helpful tool tips.

Like Martok, I found CKII not user friendly and with less patience than I used to have for learning new games, I never played it all that much. Reviews have stressed how much more player friendly CKIII was (and fun!) so I pulled the trigger. Planning on taking it out for a spin this weekend.

Thanks, ojsdad. The thing is, that's actually what I've tried to do, but I still end up feeling overwhelmed most of the time. It just seems like there's just so much more to keep track of in CK2 than in most strategy games I've played. (In comparison, even Stellaris is relatively simple, like checkers is to chess.)
I'm still on the fence about getting this before the sale is up or hold out for a better sale later in the year.
Now is probably as good a time to purchase it as any. Given Paradox's pricing policies, I doubt CK3 will be any cheaper this coming year, not even when the first major expansion drops (whenever that ends up being).
For myself, I'm just not tempted by the current sale price. Personally, $40.00 doesn't feel like a great deal to me.
In addition, my experience with Stellaris has really made me wary of Paradox in a lot of ways. Not that I'm under any delusions of never buying from them again -- I know I will ::) -- but both now and in the future, I'm going to be much, much more hesitant about when & where I pull the trigger on giving them (anymore of) my money.
-
Stellaris should've been a lesson to me as well, Martok, but no....I went and pre-purchased Empire of Sin. Buggy, repetitive, nowhere near as "historical" as I was hoping, no real sandbox game, the list goes on. There's potential for a great game in here....somewhere, but it was clearly rushed out the door. Maybe two years from now and three DLC's and I'll get my moneys worth. Ugh.

That's the Paradox business model in a nutshell. ;D

Royal Court, CK3's first major expansion, has been announced:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1303182/Crusader_Kings_III_Royal_Court/
No release date yet, although indications are it will come out towards the end of this year.
-
Paradox continues its efforts to bring grand-strategy to consoles:
-
Looks like the Royal Court expansion is set for Feb 8 2022. I was waiting to get back into this game until the expansion dropped so looks I'll be waiting a bit more.
Royal Court is the first major expansion for Crusader Kings III, the award-winning grand strategy role-playing game set in the Middle Ages. Starting on February 8, 2022, armchair rulers and aspiring emperors will be able to accumulate artifacts and build new kinds of nations in one of strategy gaming’s deepest blends of politics, intrigue, and rich character-driven stories.

Yeah, I'll be waiting for a sale.
Yeah, I'm seeing quite a few complaints (including in the Paradox forums) about Royal Court not adding that much to the game, especially at that price point. If this were a $15-20 DLC, I don't think it would be as much of an issue.

That’s big numbers for something that’s not AAA
I remember my first hour with the first one and I realised it tracked your entire family tree - you could spend hours looking at where that daughter went you married off and her family and their family and so on - loved it just for that

I’m not a massive fan of the site but over at RPS are 3 great articles where the author uses the creator tool to make a leader with every positive trait and every skill upto 100 - the guy is like 8 feet tall - he fathers 40 children, the authors goal is to war his way to the Vatican to tear down the papacy and introduce Hellenic god worship as the world religion - he dies at 140 after burning his way through France and Italy - he defeats the Faroe Islands on his own!
Just the writing alone is hilarious

Have to play CK2 first! Have it but barely touched yet. I did play CK1 a lot though.
These numbers are impressive. Shows how mainstream Paradox has become.
-
Would you believe I actually bought the season pass to CK3 when I saw it heavily discounted? So I got this too. I have to fire it up...

And I'm already behind on playing and buying the DLC

It's weird: the game is consistently scored so high. Yet one of the most common complaints is that it's lacking, content-wise -- it's another reason I've not bothered picking it up. I feel like there's a disconnect somewhere in there.

As is not uncommon, I find the patch notes for the free update more interesting than those for the accompanying DLC (which just released yesterday, incidentally - Friends & Foes is now out).
-
A lot of the usual whining and screaming how Friends and Foes should be free LC. This is the first DLC that I potentially have to pay for as it is not included in my 'royal edition' season pass.
-
A lot of the usual whining and screaming how Friends and Foes should be free LC.
It's possible the whiners & screamers aren't wrong, given how lack of content is perhaps the single most common critique I continue to see regarding CK3. On the flip side, the fanbase for Paradox games can be as toxic as any other, so I maintain a good dose of skepticism when it comes to both praise and hate.
Probably the real question is, is this DLC worth forking over the $4.99 for it? The sheer number & variety of events seem to all but guarantee you'd get your money's worth, though I get that for some, it's the principle of the thing.
-
I’ve only played one and two but have always found you make your own game in CK - does lack of content mean the player is not been steered anywhere which is what the game has always done or is there a lack of those random events that made the game a hoot which I realise I was about to start listing but there’s too many to mention
-
For me personally it did not sound like the DLC was worth 4.99. I didn't get it.
-

I usually wait for them to go on sale so I'm consistently 1 or 2 DLC packs behind :)
-
^Me too. For CKII I bought a pack with almost every DLC and the original game at like 90% off a couple of years ago. And then not too much later CKII was being given away :/
-
If playing KoH2 and writing about it has done anything its switched on my CK buttons - a quick hover over 'friends who have this game' show Gus putting in a shameful 83 minutes but Commandtent and Barthheart logging in 40 hours and 133 hours respectively - so, gentlemen i take it its everything CK2 was and more and is an enjoyable romp?
Atilla 1212 also has me looking at a Genoan campaign in that game too

I know, I know - working on getting more time in with it soon-ish.

Yes indeed I’m finding CKIII to be very interesting/entertaining to play. Most of those hours were played as the Byzantine Empire. Trying to expand it and hold it together every time there is a succession takes lots of pre planning, skull duggery, family selling, and money grubbing. Turns out that your own subjects are worse than foreign invaders! Great fun. :bigthumb:

Agreed, it is a ton of fun. Tried to create a Prussian Empire but kept having to many kids so they were always splitting everything up after I died and it took my heir forever to put it back together. I tried several solutions most of which failed or were frowned upon by people. Then the Viking raids got worse, my allies left me and things just went downhill from there. Now I'm trying to create an Ethiopian Empire in Africa which was going well until my sex crazed ruler started sleeping with everyone and having kids left and right. Now literally everyone and their mother has a claim to my kingdom. 8)

It’s like putting comfy old slippers on!!
Not seeing a vast difference between 2 and 3 but I was so far behind on 2 with the dlc it was easier to get in on the ground floor with 3
Loving the hook mechanism so far for dirty intrigue
