Title: P500 > Crack
Post by: BanzaiCat on October 02, 2019, 07:27:00 PM
My first ever P500, Stalingrad '42, has charged. Can't wait to get it. This will no doubt motivate me into checking out Holland '44. Gotta admit, though, Case Blue is a fascinating campaign.

I'm also in, on the P500 list, for the reprint of The Hunted and for Mr. President.

What are you guys in for? In the P500, not jail. Or crack.

MMP always has a couple of ASL things on pre-order, so I have about 3 or 4 things in the queue.  And World at War.

I gave up on the GMT P500s a while ago.  Didn't seem like the things I was interested in were moving, and I'd rather pay a few extra dollars when it's actually available.

I P500'd a few games a couple years ago.  It's a nice way to directly support the publisher, but...

...I'd rather pay a few extra dollars when it's actually available.

At Coolstuffinc and sometimes Amazon, you can usually find games for less than P500 price, especially after a few months once a game loses its "hotness."  By then, reviews have also shaken out and it becomes easier to make a better determination of whether or not it might be a game worth purchasing.

I'm 0/3 in my P500 experiences.  First game I backed was the 2nd edition of Empire of the Sun.  They were late delivering it so that it was available in local shops 3 weeks before I got it and they screwed me on exchange rates so that I ended up paying $20 more than I should have (and $30 more than I would have had I bought locally).

Second was Cactus Air Force.  That one got cancelled.

Third was Wing Leader Vol. 2.  That shipped to a wrong address and it took a lot of calling and emailing GMT and the courier before it finally got sorted.

No more P500s for me.

I haven't done any p500s, but all of my Kickstarters have delivered.  A few were late, one was actually several months early.  But I also didn't back Up Front or anything from Dan Y, d20 Entertainment, or Ken Whitman

I had at one point about 10 P500s ordered, but I cancelled nearly all of them, except for the three I mentioned.

I have checked CoolStuffInc and the NWS Store as well...sometimes the prices are outstanding, but adding shipping makes it about the same as Amazon. It's a different story for me there - I'm more hesitant to use 'real' money to buy games nowadays as opposed to earning points for Amazon gift cards.

Yeah, but if you want an out of print game you are kind of forced to order P500.

Wait for the next printing and then pick it up through another outlet.

I'd back P500s if they actually saved me anything. Once you add in GMTs shipping, a P500 game comes to as much, if not more, than what I can pay from a third party a few months after the game releases. So all the P500 does is tie my money up for weeks or months so I can get the game a couple months earlier than I normally would.
Title: Re: P500 > Crack
Post by: bbmike on October 03, 2019, 03:57:28 PM
I agree, but I meant the part about actually getting them to print/reprint a game in the first place. If they don't get enough pre-orders they won't print at all.

Stalingrad '42 was $62 with shipping. Their "full" price is $75, plus their shipping, means $85.

I could see this being much more reasonable on CoolStuffInc or NWS, but adding in shipping via either venue and it'll run you north of sixty bucks I'm sure. Amazon will likely be higher than that.

I missed the boat on Ukraine '43 - on Amazon it was a relatively reasonable 60 or so dollars with Prime shipping. I passed in favor of something else. Now it's $150+ on Amazon. Ridiculous.

Still cheaper than what I paid for VG's Carrier.
Title: Re: P500 > Crack
Post by: BanzaiCat on October 03, 2019, 04:21:35 PM
I paid $18 for my copy of Carrier from GenCon back in the mid 2000s. Brand new in shrink and unpunched. It was $30 but they were running an end-of-con special to clear some stuff out.

I got lucky.  8)

Same with Tokyo Express. Can't recall which con I got that one at, but it was about $25-30 or so. Not too bad.

With shipping, from the UK retailer that has 'Euro friendly shipping'  I would have to pay the equivalent of $90 for Stalingrad '42, and that is a special offer price. Full price would be at over $100.

I added the fourth printing of Empire of the Sun, the Tru'ong Bot Update Pack for Fire in the Lake, and because mirth loved it so much, Fields of Despair 2nd Printing.

Of course whether or not I actually buy them when the time comes is another point. The only one I'd really want, if I had to choose only one out of all of the P500s, is Mr. President.

I am blessed that I have no one else but myself to spend my budget on.

I have about 300 boardgames, now, having bought about 40 in the past year. I lurk on BGG and am an avid fan of GMT, Compass Games, and a few others.

Once my son goes back to school and frees up my spare room (he normally would not be living with me) I will be doing video reviews and play-throughs of most of my solitaire-friendly games.

I'm not even going to explain my miniature collection, at this time. :)
Title: Re: P500 > Crack

Right there with you, though I probably had about 500 or so games a few years ago and gave away a ton I'd had for reviews plus sold a bunch I'd bought, all before I moved. I counted 124 recently just in my house but I have 13 moving boxes' worth of games in a climate control storage unit, so that's probably another 40-50 or so.  :-[

But, the last few months have been some supreme progress in getting games to the table I've not yet had a chance to play. Currently working on Star Trek Frontiers.

I never got into minis, unless X-Wing Minis counts. Though I sold off my entire collection of that as I never played it. I find minis very cool but don't have the time or patience to paint them.

Very good, but difficult to get into. The rules are dense (reminds me of old Avalon Hill manuals). There's a few how to play vids on BGG that look good though.

It's my understanding this game is Mage Knight but with a Star Trek wrapper. Never played MK.

A copy of Devil Boats landed in my mailbox several days ago. It has to have one of the oddest rule books I've ever seen - a bit of an overview but then it dives into lots of pages of charts and tables in a CYOA type format. Takes a bit getting used to but I think it's coming together.

Stags, bbmike - you guys get your copies?

Wouldn't the UPS store just return it to sender?

I have a UPS box I set up nearly 20 years ago when divorce was looming and I needed a safe place to get mail. I still have it as a fallback address. I asked them once what would happen if I forgot to pay for a while and they said they just send stuff back.
