I have a face-to-face game of ASL scheduled for Saturday morning. It will be the first face-to-face game I've played in about 14 months. Even better - this will be a new opponent, who I discovered only lives about 3 miles from me. I have another face-to-face game scheduled for mid-May, but that opponent lives about 50 miles away (he's a good friend, so I don't mind the drive).
I had a nice ASL game this morning - except for the results. I had some French partisans attacking against some German conscripts in a scenario set the day after D-Day. I had plenty of turns to reach my victory conditions, but when I broke a key defending squad with an LMG, and I gained a hero to go with my squad and LMG, I took a chance to seize the initiative and rushed across the street. The odds of that squad rallying were very low - snake eyes or nothing - and if they didn't rally I could push them out. Well, next turn he rolled snake eyes, and not only rallied, but battle hardened, and then shot my squad and hero in the face. There goes my right flank. On my left flank a German squad went berserk, and assaulted a squad and a key leader. My defensive fire against the 'zerker was impotent, and to make it worse I broke my machine gun, allowing him to move into my hex, where he wiped me out. There goes my left flank. In the center, I was making good progress and actually eliminated a key squad and was poised to take control of the building, but that attack stalled too. At that point, I conceded.

I’ve spent half my life’s earning on wargames, women, and drink. The rest I wasted.
