We live in exciting times with new technologies changing the way we live and global shifts underway in power and influence. In the MOD you will have the chance to be at the heart of responding to these challenges. For Defence, and for the Royal Navy (RN), this is a time of opportunities. Advanced equipment, such as the Queen Elizabeth Class carriers, will allow the RN unprecedented reach, but procuring such equipment is only part of the challenge; how best to employ such potent assets?

At the Maritime Warfare Centre (MWC) you will be part of a diverse team of military subject matter experts and civilian operational analysts (OAs) charged with producing battle-winning tactical doctrine for the RN. This is achieved through trials on RN and Allied platforms, reconstruction of real incidents and military exercises, advanced modelling and simulation, and wargaming. Within the MWC wargaming team you will be critical in supporting these activities through the design, delivery and analysis of wargames focussed on providing insights and practical recommendations relevant to RN operational priorities.
Job description
MWC Wargame Operational Analyst 2 (MWC-WARGAME OA 2) will work as part of the MWC wargaming team on a diverse and evolving range of requirements in support of RN tactical development. Their primary responsibility is leading and/or contributing to the design, delivery, and analysis of wargames (particularly a series of three annual games sponsored by the Fleet Commander), either individually or as part of a team, and the active development of wargaming methodologies and tools to support MWC activity.

The role would ideally suit someone with strong communication skills (both written and oral) who has experience of applying analytical methodologies to support decision making processes. Actively seeking opportunities to identify and utilise relevant wargaming tools (including software) and techniques used in industry and elsewhere in Defence, particularly the Defence Wargaming Centre (DWC) at Dstl, will also form part of the role.

While the focus of this role will be wargaming, the job holder will be part of the larger MWC operational analysis team which works across a variety of specialisations. As such, there may be the opportunity to support analysis of RN trials and exercises, either from the UK or deployed for short periods onboard RN or Allied warships and support vessels.

Responsibilities
The successful applicant will be responsible for the design, delivery, analysis, and reporting of specific wargames, sometimes as the lead or only OA, sometimes as part of a larger team, as prioritised by MWC and senior stakeholders.

There are no line management responsibilities currently assigned to this position; however, with an evolving team this may change in the future. WARGMAE OA 2 will report to WARGAME OA with MWC Chief Scientific Advisor (CSA) as their countersigning officer (CSO). As a project focussed task lead, they are also accountable for delivery of wargames on behalf of stakeholders inside and outside of MWC. These include: MWC warfare pillar commanders, Navy Command Headquarters (NCHQ), Joint Strike Assurance Group (JSTAG), UK Battle Staffs, and others.

The following skills and/or experience have been identified as essential for this role:

a.   Degree or higher degree in a scientific or analytical discipline, or equivalent experience;

b.   Knowledge and/or experience of the theory and practice of wargaming;

c.   Experience of employing analytical techniques and/or experimental design.

The following skills and/or experience have been identified as desirable for this role:

a.   Experience in the application of decision-support wargaming in a professional setting (military, intelligence, security, business);

b.   Experience working with and drawing inferences from quantitative and qualitative data;

c.   Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

d.   Knowledge of UK Defence doctrine and/or RN equipment and capabilities.
