I coughed up my $60 registration fee.  I'm running one session of a Chaosium scenario for Rogue Cthulhu.  My wife might come up with me to visit buddies.

I decided that the drive is not worth it.  I'm going to fly this time, rent a car, and stay at a hotel out at the airport.

Damn, I would love to snag a seat at your session. I'll try to sign up as soon as I can.

Doing my best to line up the vacation days and Award Points/Miles to make the trip.  Do y'all have room for a part-timer volunteer GM ...  (as long as Larry is still hosting Harpoon/Command at Sea) and I get to hang for a while with the coolest wargamers I've met.

sorry I missed the last planning "phone call" … arriving a little earlier than normal (Tuesday afternoon) due to logistics considerations.  Departing Saturday night NLT about 9pm.  Will be looking to play events hosted by Larry Bond and Mark Walker … beyond that I think everything else is negotiable … I love volunteer GMing with the ADs … but still this is a primarily a gameplaying CON for me.

would love to host a double-blind WW2 naval (eg Battle of Santa Cruz) using SWWAS (hopefully AP will actually release their update to SOPAC (South Pacific) this year.)
...

happy to be here (there), proud to serve

Hey, all!  I'm headed to Origins this year and was wondering what sort of wargaming events will be run or how I might find people to play games with.  I'm interested in playing and learning anything, but wouldn't mind getting games of LnLT, COIN, or Triumph and Tragedy in.  How can I find other wargamers?  Would people recommend getting the board room pass or is that mainly targeted at the Euro crowd?

We've got a few errors with getting our events loaded on the Origins events grid right now, and I'm trying to sort it out, but once the event grid is open, there's an ability to search on "Armchair Dragoons presents..." and find our events that way.

There are other wargame events, but sometimes you have to search by game title

As far as open gaming goes, we have some in our area, and there's a cadre of wargamers that'll set up in the Board Room, but there's also (usually) a thread or geek list on BGG (usually run by Bob Fix and yes that's his real name) that let's people post what they're bringing and what they're hoping to find a game of

We're planning on LNLT, A Distant Plain, and others at our area.

Thanks, Brant for the info.  I found the geeklist and it does look like a lot of gaming is going to happen in the board room, so I guess I'll pick that up as well.  I went to Origins in 2016 as a booth monkey, but I was able to spend some evening participating in the grogheads events.  I'm definitely looking forward to being able to explore games that are hard for me to get to the table.

I'm bringing my (much) younger brother this year and he's really into 40k.  I saw a few 40k events on the schedule, but not much else.  Does anyone know how much GW / 40k presence there is at Origins?

There's not a ton, honestly.  There's no official GW presence as a vendor, so the exhibit hall sales are limited to third-party vendors who are more interested in just moving product than sponsoring organized play or anything similar.

There's some groups that'll set up in the minis area, but that's probably what you already found on the event grid.

I've spoken with Paul (events manager) several times over the past 2 weeks, and he's got our events and everything looks fine, but he's waiting for a couple of other updates to come in and load the all at once into an updated event grid, rather than piecemeal the updates.  I'll post the full event list once I get it confirmed that we're in there
Title: Re: Origins 2019: June 12-16

So I guess my "where are all the 'Armchair Dragoons Presents..." events (looking at the spreadsheet now available at http://originsgamefair.com/events/) ...

I usually try to plan my week from this so I have a plan of attack when the game event registration opens up.  Which I guess  for this year is next Saturday (I didn't see a time)

Not quite as critical as GENCON ... but popular events fill up fast (1st hour or so of online registration being made avallable in some cases)

So, I am looking forward to your post of the ADP events before then if able.  Thanks.

Registration supposedly opens on May 4 - 9 days away.  But the event schedule with the actual event numbers has not been posted.

Seems like Origins is having their normal level of "organization."

Glad those Executive Director changes have cleared up the problems!

Are the dates on those correct?  You've got things on the 14-16, which is Fri-Sun.... that seems kind of odd.

On the Kriegsspiel, I'm doing one of the online ones currently.  Will I be fine signing up for one of the ones without doing the intro?  And I'm debating the Command Post, but is it the same scenario that's been run the past couple years?  I really enjoy it, but if it's the same situation I kind of remember a bit about that and wouldn't want what I know to spoil things for those who aren't in the know.

PM me if you have something I may be interested in.  I write enough AARs and reviews that my general interests should be pretty well known - if you read my work.  The exception is solo, tabletop wargames that I'm just starting to play again.

Decision Games will be there again, and have a handful of their mini solo games there, like Rogers Rangers, or Suez '56, or LRDG, or Vikings.  They're decent little games. Nothing fancy, but most of them are pretty fun

Looks like I'll be able to come down on Saturday.  Want to hit the two On Flashpoint events at 11 and 1.  Would also like to attend the Kriegsspiel and Command Colors events.  Will a 1 day badge for Saturday get me into those events.  Do I need tokens or anything else to get into any of those.  Always scratch my head on what I need to attend any of these sessions.

My shopping list consist of Table Battles and the Next War supplement.

Saturday is also Olivia's birthday, so not sure if I'll get to attend everything I would like.

The copy of Across 5 Aprils was unpunched and in great shape (thanks Enterprise Games!!!).

1 game/kid (Squirrel or Die for son, King of Tokyo for daughter)
I got Ft Sumter
-- a handful of dice (to support our buddy Craig Zipse)
-- an etched pint glass for my wife (plus my usual one from Barleys, but it's pretty lame this year)
-- official Origins t-shirt for my daughter (if you see them, you'll understand why, for her)
-- handmade bolt action pen for me
the usual freebies - commemorative die, too many CSI tote bags, Game Trade magazine - but not all the D&D stuff they usually give out (dunno if they weren't there or if it was just bc K wasn't there much to go get them)

Weird- looks like there are some placeholder images on the counter that were never replaced at print time:

Unless Decision Games got permission from both Gerry Anderson and Stanley Kubrick to use the Eagle transporter and Martian shuttle images. Some of the others look vaguely familiar as well...

My Origins haul was the lightest haul I've had.  I picked up Innovation (with the first two expansions) off the virtual market.  Beyond that, over the weekend I bought a pretzel at North Market and a new Armchair Dragoons shirt since the Grogheads one is, well, out of style I suppose (it was also incredibly large, whereas this new one actually fits).

And that was it.  Given that I wasn't able to be around for the raffle, this is the first year I've ever left without getting anything from the booth.  (I fear that Brant might catch up to the amount of stuff I've gotten from you guys, which would be a travesty).  The boy and I will suffer through the year by continuing to enjoy our past acquisitions. Had I known the coasters were up for grab, one would have made its way into my bag.  Alas, I'll have to snag one next year.

As for the dealer room... I didn't see a thing that grabbed me.  The most impressive new thing I saw were the Game Toppers that were in the board room.  They wer comfortable, no one got splinters, and they still looked like new after being used almost non-stop for the entire convention.  That was amazing advertisement on their part.

The trip home Saturday night was an adventure as Cincinnati got almost 6" of rain that evening and I'd wager that most of I-71 got hit with a lot of it.  I've never seen that much rain.  We saw water shooting a good 10-15' out of a manhole (I have no clue where the cover itself went) and every secondary route to my house was flooded.  Didn't get home until well after 3am.  It was a mess.

That's a common refrain this year. Whether it was economics or lack of must-have products, not a lot went home with people

a new Armchair Dragoons shirt since the Grogheads one is, well, out of style I suppose (it was also incredibly large, whereas this new one actually fits).
There's no hard feelings about GH gear.  I mean, we're not going to wear it in the booth, but there's no denying the fact that for 5 years, GH was running the wargaming area, and got a lot of attention for it.  We're just doing it under a different flag now.

this is the first year I've ever left without getting anything from the booth
ACK!

(I fear that Brant might catch up to the amount of stuff I've gotten from you guys, which would be a travesty).
TBH, tho, you're one of our most regular gamers, up there with Gary M, Steve P, and Finley B.

Had I known the coasters were up for grab, one would have made its way into my bag.  Alas, I'll have to snag one next year.
I only asked that people wait 'til Sunday to take them so we had them to use throughout the convention. I never said not to take them :)

As for the dealer room... I didn't see a thing that grabbed me.
See above  :-\

They were pretty sweet, but there was no practical way to smuggle one out w/o someone noticing

My family and I always start our trip back from Origins (or any big event) with a round of "Good, Bad, Indifferent".

Here's mine:

GOOD:  Seeing the crew; discussing our perverse need to purchase WWII, tactical-scale games; and seeing the Kriegsspiel again succeed.  And, for what it's worth, all of our events were at least reasonably well attended.  We could certainly have chosen differently, but I don't recall us having any no-show events.

BAD:  The food court in the convention center is now absurd in terms of price, offerings, and crowding.  We discovered the joys of going to North Market for an early lunch, but that can bugger up a schedule.  And screw that hallway Subway nonsense.  Also, not that it was bad for me, but I felt horrible walking past the ersatz celebrities hawking selfies and signed photographs for ridiculous prices being visited by no one.

INDIFFERENT:  Wargames at Origins.  We're there.  Flying Pig was there.  Don is ever mighty and did very well as, really, the only game in town.  Lost Battalion ditched at the last minute.  Proving Grounds couldn't come.  Our beloved Lock 'n Load was there only in spirit. And VPG, if I may be coarse, shit the bed with it's absurd "Dawn of the Zeds" - only booth.  Did gamers play wargmes?  Heck yes, but this was not a good year for us on the show floor.

This was my 2nd Origins and I had a lot of fun.  Being a listener of the podcast, it was nice to meet Brant and the rest of the podcast crew.  Maybe he was just tired, but Brant seemed surprised to meet a listener.  I went to 3 talks, all of which were fun and informative, and played in Kriegsspiel.  Unfortunately, my team's commander made some tactical choices that limited my own ability to make interesting choices (a lot of time was spent on rolling for his combat).  Nonetheless, it was a worthwhile endeavor and I would like to play again the next time that I go to origins.  Thanks to Doug for running the event!

In terms of non ACG, I played full games of Fire in the Lake and Space Corps and demo'd several other games.  Both FiTL and SC were fun. I'm not quite sure how I feel about how COIN games incentivise screwing over your historic "ally" (I was US and repeatedly moved ARVN out of towns in order to remove COIN control and lower his score).  The only demo worth noting was Gloomhaven.  I had never played before and was blown away by just about every aspect of the game.  The game has been gushed over in prior podcasts and now I totally get why.  Coincidentally, Miniature Market had a flash sale on Gloomhaven which made the purchase all the easier.

In terms of new kit, I concur with prior comments in that there weren't any convention standouts.  As I noted in one of the ACG talks, like most, my ability to play games doesn't keep pace with my purchasing habits.  Growing every more conscientious of this sad fact, I am trying to only buy games that I think having interesting mechanics, cover a non-traditional historical period (no more WW2!), and/or have a reasonable shot at being played.  That being said, the component quality of new releases is absolutely stunning.

Traveling from California makes Origins a bit expensive con-wise so I don't know if I'd be willing to go every year, but I definitely plan to revisit.  All in all, I had a great time.

Gloomhaven really is very well done.  My group has played 23 scenarios so far.  We've yet to lose interest, which is something that I can't say about many other games after that many plays.  The retirement system is really smart.  By the time you're starting to feel that you've moved from getting your character to being a bit bored of it, you're likely going to be retiring (if you haven't already).  We've had three retirements so far and each of us has been pleasantly surprised at how different they have been from what we played before.

I may  have mentioned it earlier, but I'm really surprised how many people I saw playing Root since it's really a COIN game.  A lot quicker and cuter than the COIN games.  But a COIN game none the less.  Maybe the booth should run some of the hidden war games like that, trick people into moving from little wooden cats to cardboard chits.

My current character might be an exception to the retirement system in Gloomhaven. I'm at level 9 and nowhere near fulfilling the retirement goal. However, the game does allow you to change characters if you choose. I think I may have to do that.

Ares ran numerous miniatures wargame sessions during Origins.  I played in two different, large battle, WW1 aviation games.

True, but their only "Sails of Glory" games were pirate-themed nonsense.  They, too, are turning away.

I got email feedback from Boardgamegeek from Rogue Cthulhu and Everything Epic Games on my review.  Have not heard from the Buffy people or the Hyatt for some reason.     :nolisten:

Didn't even notice a wargame.

As always, it was great to see the crew. Not surprisingly Cyrano's summation pretty much covers it for me, too.

Adam and Scott, it was good to see you guys at the booth and in events. There's no doubt you're part of the "family" at this point.

I'd also be remiss to not point out the stellar effort bbmike made with the pop-up banners, table runners, signs and the rest. The booth really looked great this year. I noticed during the AAR that booth decor didn't come up for the first time I can remember.

Definitely the lightest haul ever for me, too. Not even considering the lack of wargame vendors, everything else was just kind of "meh."

Has anyone considered the possibility that we already own ALL the games?

I'd be willing to bet you don't own Bunny Kingdom or The Legend of the Cherry Tree that Blossoms Every Ten Years. Yes, those were actual games at Origins this year.

Those were games that have been around for a while now... Bunny Kingdom came out in 2007, Cherry Tree last year.  I've only played Bunny Kingdom once.  I didn't care for it, but there are folks who seem to enjoy it.  (That or they really over produced it because it was made by the guy who made Magic: The Gathering and thought it would sell like crazy, so now they're pushing it every chance they get.)

I maintain my belief that everything new at Origins was old.

Costume gallery #1 - folks walking around the convention.  There's over 100 pics in here, so it'll take a while to cycle thru the entire slideshow.  Gallery #2 is just the costume contest, and that'll be up later in the week.

Numbers are in
https://www.originsgamefair.com/news/origins-2019-by-the-numbers (https://www.originsgamefair.com/news/origins-2019-by-the-numbers)

Quote
Total badges: 20,642 (up from 18,646 in 2018!)
Total turnstile: 71,237
Total exhibitors: 257
Total Game Masters: 1,085
Total volunteers: 163

for contrast, last year's info
Quote
hat’s a wrap on Origins 2018!
· Attendance hit another record high at 18,646, an increase of 1,647 from 2017.
· Turnstile attendance also hit a record high at 70,765, an increase of 11,807 from 2017.

What is the difference between "total turnstile" and "total badges?"  Don't you have to have a badge to attend anything?

The GM number is misleading.  The GM count is only if a pass was given for someone running enough to count.  If you ran a session (or more than one) and did not get a GM badge from an organizer - you are not counted as a GM.  I ran a session but would not count.  Quite a few people who ran games I played in did not have a GM badge.

As I understand it from the GAMA dudes

1)  The GM count is the # of GM badges they gave out.  So this year, I don't count as a GM b/c I was on a vendor badge from Enterprise.  My dad counted as a GM b/c he was on a GM badge from the War College

2)  Turnstile is total number of "badge days" - so a 5-day badge counts as 5 'turnstiles' and a weekend badge counts as 2.  Again, can be a little misleading if someone buys a whole-con badge and leaves Saturday night, b/c I think they still count as part of Sunday's turnstile count.

Very cool; the Ghostbusters were definitely among my favorites.  :)  I"m always amazed by the work some folks put into their costumes.
