Title: Radio Commander (Steam)
Post by: BanzaiCat on October 10, 2019, 07:07:56 PM
Radio Commander is a rather intriguing-looking game that was crowdfunded on KS and has just launched. I'd not heard of it until it popped up on Reddit.

Quote
In Radio Commander you are playing as an American military commander serving in US Army during the Vietnam War. You will be carrying a heavy burden as your mission is to coordinate military operations taking place between 1965 and 1968.

I'm still very early on this, but damn me if they've not tried to build a Vietnam KS.

The story wrapper isn't too amazing, but the gameplay itself is starting deep and getting deeper.

Given the very low price-point and the radical departure from the usual game nonsense, I'm glad I at least gave it a try.  The one thing it's already given me -- what as it allows for a full AAR -- is that "SERIOUSLY??" moment as I realize on the replay what the V-C were up to in a particular mission.

That's good to know. To be honest, after watching that video, it seemed that some of the English was rather off, as if it were done by a non-English speaking dev. Some of the lines in the dialogue made no sense, so I was wondering if the gameplay was just as bad. An endorsement from you, sir, is enough to want me to get it.

The dev team is Polish so there’s bound to be some language problems.

So as a writer that has done extensive work for games across many platforms, it is a complete mystery to me as to why they wouldn't bother to put their text through a Western technical writer to smooth those wrinkles out.

Some charge outrageous prices, yeah. But savvy ones know devs aren't swimming in cash (not like EA or other 'giants,' but they have in-house resources to rely on) and therefore look at it as an experience-builder or something they truly enjoy rather than a way to get rich.

At least that's my opinion. I'd take more pride in knowing I helped clean up text in a document or a game and if they throw a few bucks at me for that, great.

Honestly, the writing problems I have with the game so far relate much more to their attempt to jam a lot of "hipness" into too small a space.

I know a fair amount of about military communications in the modern era -- not as much as many hereabouts, of course -- and a lot of the chatty stuff going on on a regular basis would not have been tolerated.

There's also a desire to address racial, political, and military issues that's ham-handed and would have required a pretty fundamental re-think of what they were trying to do.

I ignore all that.

In fact, you can turn much of it off.

What I am enjoying is watching the FoW fall away and watching the game think.  Haven't yet determined how much of it "works" but it's considering terrain, flanks, LoS, ammo depletion, fuel depletion, morale, and a lot of other stuff.

I, of course, have already contacted the developer to demand a Napoleonic version.

Looking forward to the hip Napoleonic radio chatter, " 'ere comes Boney. Stand ready, my dudes!"

There WAS a Napoleonic game back in the day, late 80s/early 90s, where you issued orders and had to wait for the rider(s) to get there. It was Waterloo (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waterloo_(video_game)).

The very intimation in this post that I didn't have same wounds me to my core.

It runs today in a DoS box on my PC.

The problem is it takes an AWFUL lot to figure out what happened during turn resolution as it only shows before and after...

Wounds or no, there was no foul intention to cause grievous harm through insinuation or obfuscation, sir.

I figured you probably playtested the bloody thing.  ;D

I found it highly intriguing because it wasn't an 'insta feedback' thing like every other game. But it was eminently frustrating.

instead of radio chatter, everything is bugle calls.  How well you learn them determines how well you understand the messages being sent

They drop a lot of F-bombs in the game, which I didn't think anyone would stand for, especially not in 1965 early on. Or ever. Not some REMF sitting in a tent dozens of klicks away.  ;D

I would play that.

I grabbed this as soon as it came out. Indeed, it's been on my wishlist for months. It's Kreigsspeil.

Unfortunately, my current "meh" attitude toward computer gaming has kept me from giving it a spin. Probably tomorrow.

It claims that pebbled concrete is an evil plot perpetrated by the coaching staff at Duke.

Most evil plots can be traced to this same source...
