On my travels looking for games, I noticed a set called D-Day -
D-Day Omaha

D-Day Tarawa
https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/67600/d-day-tarawa

D-Day Peleliu

They intrigued me because I'd read they were pretty good solitaire games but the maps look freakishly busy.

Anyway - I noticed that they were published by the same publisher for RAF:The Battle of Britain 1940  - Decision Games. I played RAF:Battle of Britain and there were 3 things I noticed which really struck a chord with me
  • The rules - they were extremely well laid out and easy to follow - making absorption of them easy
  • The game played superbly well
  • It was a fantastic solo design

Then I noticed that the designer of these games was actually the designer of that fantastic Battle of Britain game.

Seems like I will be adding these to my collection at some point in the future. BoB was superb and I've seen plenty of positive writings about these games.

Anyone got 'em?

I have Omaha Beach and Tarawa. They're excellent systems. When you first look at them you're going to think, holy hell, WTF did I just get myself into? This looks impossibly complex. It's really not, once you get into the rules and start playing.

They're VERY unforgiving, though. One playthrough may see a modicum of success, while in another you may get slaughtered before you step off the beaches. That tension, though, is what makes the gameplay enjoyable.

I have Omaha and it has been my favorite solitaire gaming experience to date. Don't let the map throw you, there are alot of color and symbols but for me they seemed to fade into the background as I was focusing trying to get my units off the beach.

I would recommend using the rules flipbook over at BGG to help you learn the game and guide you through the turn sequence. It really helped me get into the game and I used it the whole time to help move the turns along and I only needed to refer to the rule book for various clarifications as the game went on.

Don't feel too bad. It's $52.00 for the game plus $24.95 to ship it WITHIN the US.  :o
