So when I was looking for a single man counter game,  someone mentioned this.

I immediately dismissed it because the "board" was cards and counters - well let's just say the game and it's components weren't something that struck me.

However, whilst looking for a platoon based game for Vietnam, I noticed this had a deck of Vietnam terrain cards and I've since looked at it again and - well, watching a couple of videos...at first I was kind of taken with it, then I noticed in the second video the guy was having some issues, there seemed to be alot of checking tables...and the most cardinal sin of all (for me) - pulling cards for a dice roll....just include some damn dice man!!

Anyway - I was kind of taken by it - and not. I saw some things I thought were pretty cool and other parts where I kind of shook my head a bit. I've also since read that alot of people find the rules poorly written and unnecessarily complicated and I get the feeling it's 20% game and 80% trudge.

Anyhoo - point of the post - I was wondering if any of you guys had it and what you thought of it?

I know its quite a popular game, and I have looked at it, but I'm not too enamoured of card driven games (other than MtG).

I'd like to hear more about those other two games judgedredd mentioned.

I have it but - surprise - have not played it yet.

It's VERY complicated, from what I understand, but everyone whom says that, further says it's a fantastic game and completely worth your time invested in learning it. This is why I haven't sold it yet; I fully intend to get to it sooner or later.

That's a good question. :)

I just finished pouring over Pacific Tide for a review for the site. Last night I finally put Tide of Iron on my table to learn. It's got a slow but sure introduction to the system by immediately getting you to put boards, pieces, and dice on the table and start playing after maybe a page or two of rules. I wanted something light an easy to get into.

I'm really interested in Fields of Fire since it covers so many war periods.

The rulebook sucks but the game itself is amazing. If you can get past the errata and sometimes opaque rules, its the best tactical game out there, imho, even 2 player ones.

I played FoF a fair amount when it first came out. The rulebook was far from comprehensive, making it super difficult to learn. I really enjoyed the game once I had it up and running. My only regret is that I waiting too long before I attempted to play it again and will need to suffer through that damn learning curve again if I want another go at it.

btw JD, I wouldn't let the card based map put you off. Up Front takes a similar approach and is one of the most entertaining wargames I have played.
