All day long we've had unboxing articles on the site, culminating with the most BC'est video of all time
-
???
I didn't forget what was in it. I didn't notice how old the magazines were. That Wargamer mag was from 1984 and is in pristine shape, as if I just picked it up off the newsstand shelf.
-
Nobody believes you. You clearly suffer from some sort of game purchase amnesia. :D
-
Like none of YOU do, either. :P

I don't video my mystery deliveries.

Then it's good someone around here does.

Where?

In the World of TomorrowTM

You opening a box will certainly drive traffic :bigthumb:

Away?

I am always fully aware of the ridiculous number of game purchases that I make! ;D

I am always fully aware of the ridiculous number of game purchases that I make! ;D
You should make videos: "I know exactly what I ordered."

That would be high entertainment.
"Yep, as I expected, exactly what I was expecting."

lol...instead of buying games next time, maybe invest in a set of grown up scissors :go-on:

I did enjoy it - very much. However - you are adding fuel to the fire that is our addiction. Now we don't just buy games for ourselves - but for the unboxing event.
::)
I do hope to have a couple more by next month though. Probably Compass Games Battle of the Bulge and Decision Games D-Day at Peleliu - or Tarawa...or if I can get it, Omaha Beach
-
I enjoyed them too. Except for the neat, orderly way the boxes are opened and the contents examined one at a time. I'd be like ripping the parts out and punching the units out before I even checked-out all of them. Ripping Apart the Box Day. :D

I would like to correct something in my write up of Victoria Cross II
I said
The 6 Day War with an almost defenceless Israel and rapid, massive deployment turning certain defeat from a larger enemy into an unexpected victory.
No - it wasn't...I was meaning Yom Kippur in 1973 - not the very aggressive first strike war of 1967. For some reason, I often interchange them and just as often have to correct myself.
Sorry :-*

Watching some of the unboxing ideas today. When I brought up the d-day quad, it displayed the message as seen. When I tap it to play, it brings me out of the browser into the YouTube app with no sign of the video I had just clicked. I’m signed into YouTube both in the browser and the app.
-
yeah, I've reached out to Ardwulf for help. It was supposed to go live when the article did. Not sure what the disconnect is, but it's hosted on his own YT channel so no way we can make any changes to it.

It always costs me money. I shouldn't partake in these - or at least read/watch them!
Iron Curtain looks nice as does Next War:Vietnam (and it's sister Korea).

Also: In hindsight, I'm surprised I've not seen more games dedicated to the Seven Years War. Seems like it would be a fairly popular scenario to cover.

There's a lot more than you think. They are just not obviously named.
Academy has 1754
GMT has Wilderness War
Worthington had Wilderness Empires
VPG's got Empires in America
There's a bunch out there. You just have to know what to look for
-
Sorry, I should have clarified that I was referring to games that cover the *entire* war. I've searched in the past, and it seems like the overwhelming majority cover only the North American theater. Games like Clash of Monarchs and your Soldier Kings appear to be distinctly in the minority.
-
Gotcha.
You're right that there are not many that cover the conflict in North America and what was happening in Europe and elsewhere in the same game

^Those are good games (I have 1775) but they are screaming for either nice looking counters or minis.
-
Yeah, I hate cubes.... Seems like a cop-out to me. I've only bought one game with cubes, Labyrinth, and it just doesn't cut it for me. :P
-
They are apparently looking at a new printing of those games with minis similar to the 878: Vikings minis
-
:bigthumb:
-
I hope they sell just the minis to those of us who already own the game.

I don't know for sure that they're doing this. I've just been told they're looking into it.
That said, there's nothing stopping you from buying your own boxes of minis and swapping them out yourself 8)

It's a solid game, too, and easily solo'd. I played it all the way through once and things ended much worse for the U.S. cavalry than they did historically - the Indians wiped out Reno, Benteen, and Custer. Quite surprising because I thought the U.S. had them on the ropes at one point.
-
Custer thought the same :bigthumb:
-
Custer comes on the scene early in the game - it takes three turns before Reno appears. So, your choices are limited as the U.S. cavalry - though the decision between them is very difficult. Do you push on and try to take the Indians on yourself? Or do you hunker down and wait for reinforcements?
I charged forward, and it didn't go well. :)

I had the original WiF, way back when it first came out. Basically, it was unplayable.
I bought the original game too back in the mid-80s...or rather, my grandfather bought it for me. It was confusing as hell but I powered through it as best I could. I've had it all this time but just traded it away a few weeks ago. I had thought about getting it back to the table but I don't have a table to fit it on now, so...
-
I'm not sure if they have done one or more rules revisions to it over the years, and if so, that made any improvement to the playability.

No one has a table big enough. I think this is one of those 'floor games'. ;D
-

They have, but more along the lines of expansions. This list goes over pretty much all of them, looks like. I never got into it beyond the base copy.
https://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/22228/guide-world-flames-universe-final-edition
I had been tasked at Matrix to do the manual for the computer version but that was pretty much the straw that broke the camel's back for me, there.

https://www.armchairdragoons.com/articles/reviews/unbox/unboxingday-battlefield-europe-by-gdw/
Good god...how did you people play boardgames back then.
- Map art seems non existent (though I would say there's a certain charm to the basicness of them)
- the counters look like you need an axe to get them out the cardboard and are really small and hard to read - and always such stark colours.
- the manuals and player aids were just so bland
I salute you all for not waiting until the 21st century to buy decent games :applause:
-
Had no idea what we were missing by comparison....

Actually, there a much worse looking games from back then.
there are worse-looking games now!
-
But they're worse-looking in TechnicolorTM!
-
But they're worse-looking in TechnicolorTM!
for some of them, it's the over-abundance of color that is the problem
-
Yeah, that is true. ;D
-
I was looking at the counters for 'A Time for Trumpets', which makes 'extensive' use of colours.
-
OK guys - get those wallets opened up!

I think that one is best staying boxed. ;D

Not everyday I receive something directly from the US but after roughly a month it finally arrived.
Definitely NOT my everyday thing, this was totally an extravagance.

uh... MORE INFO PLEASE!
-
uh... MORE INFO PLEASE!
Okay.
Battles for Prydain is a "pet project" of Eleazar Lawson, using his own words as per the interview chat he gave to Pellam's Wasteland channel ().
If Prydain doesn't ring a bell then it is simply another name for Albion, or as to be most historically accurate, Wales or the last bastion of the Britons.
The entire game is set, not on a Monmouth's Arthurian high/late medieval imaginary ( which nonetheless produced one of my most beloved films John Boorman's Excalibur ) but on a post roman dark ages setting of the British isles, so in a sense it is more close to Bernard Cornwell novels, mainly the Warlord Trilogy ( if you haven't read them do yourself a favour and buy them and read them thrice ) which presents exactly that period while weaving all the legendary round table notables into the what-could-happen authentic history of Britain.
I am easily hyped when the subject matter is part of my imaginary - i'll be honest, i'm no historian nor even close to amateur historian, i''m just a very enthusiastic person about certain subject - and medieval legends are part of that imaginary. Be it fantasy, history or skimming the veil between both, same as the mists than cover Avalon.
The game itself is based on those troops, formations and heroic deeds. Haven't played the game I can only guess they may well be a staple of the ruleset. After all if one looks to the legends surrounding arthur and even a couple centuries later with the norsemen sagas, it is all about warbands led by warriors of name and fame.
But until I put it to the table I shall reserve my comments.
The game pieces are all counters and round markers but not in cardboard. They are MDF board 3mm and full colour print. They have no "nibs" whatsoever and are fully cut. The map, support charts and documentation are the classic gloss paper. The entire game comes in a bag, no box.
You can try to order it directly from the publisher/distributor - San Joaquin Valley Press - I have no clue how many copies they have left.
The post cost to continental europe was high but is one of those game I just couldn't let go. I know I can do everything it does with miniatures and a ruleset but there was something about it that drawn me to it.
My games table is full at the moment, so i will wait a bit until I throw it to play but in the meanwhile I have the rules to go over.

Wow! RockyMountainNavy's copy of Tactics II looks to be in amazingly good shape. I am curious, the instruction booklet has highlighter markings and the counters are unpunched? Are they from separate copies put together to make this complete set? I would have imagined the counters to be punched if the rules were highlighted.
I also like the "What is a wargame?" section of the rulebook. Reminds me of "What is a roleplaying game?" found at the start of all the rule books and articles about rpgs in the late 70s and early 80s.
Thanks for sharing!

The Hunt for Red October was one of my first ever proper :hehe: war boardgames. I had that and Red Storm and A Line in the Sand (which I discovered I couldn't really play solo due to the diplomacy aspect).
-
I have Hunt for Red October also. A friend of mine said he'd send me his copy of Red Storm Rising but he's not done that yet. It's my understanding that the games can be merged and played together.
I used to have A Line in the Sand myself! I actually played it once with a large group of friends. It was a shitshow of the umpteenth degree. ;D But, absolutely fun.
-
I had all 3 of those as well. In fact, they may yet live somewhere at my parents house. I'm going to have to go hunting when I'm next over there.
RO and RSR can indeed be merged. Did that a lot as a kid, but it only worked because we had a ping pong table in the basement that became a gaming table for those sessions.
Line in the Sand was a blast if you had friends who would really get into their roles. We had a house rule that anytime you chose one of the options involving giving a speech that you had to actually stand up and do so. So much fun.

I don't know how many retailers are going to get it. You may well have to order it direct from the manufacturer

That would be my understanding, at least at present. SCG may not even be aware of the existence of Assault Games who may not even want to market through retailers. I have no idea what their marketing strategy is.

I still very much like the look of a Most fearful Sacrifice...pity the board is too big - or my table is too small - either way, it won't fit.
If I ever move house, I'll be sure to grab a gaming room where I can setup a table that I can get round both sides and with a bigger footprint.

Games like Cassino make me laugh. I mean games from the 70s and 80s
I liken them to computer games...they were great, but they hurt the eyes they look so bad
-
Just as an FYI your Bitter Woods unboxing headline says Bitter Woods by GMT. It's actually from Compass games.

Thanks. Not sure how we crossed that up. Fixing now!

That was totally my bad obviously (just wanted to publicly come clean).
I had been writing another document and GMT was a crossover headline (start of doc) that I didn't change.
