Or, eight drunk guys in a a canoe with Arquebuses...
I might have written something about the golden age of gaming.
This might have prompted me to want to play an SPI classic on SNF.
The problem always is, though, that very few support MP.
And then it hit me: There are TWO excellent quads where all FOUR games are available simultaneously.
This next Saturday, we are going to shove this sucker straight against the wall and see if it breaks by getting as many Dragoons as we can to play one of the four games.
I have the rules in a Dropbox ready to share.
Let's do this and troop the olde colours.
-
I'd be interested in trying, but I can't promise I'll have a lot of time to look at rules...I'm in rehearsals and that'll take up my Monday through Thursday evenings next week.
-
Considering the rules run to less than five pages...NO EXCUSES!!!
Break a leg!
-
Five pages is do-able!
-
In!
Mirth, you need in on this..... :bigthumb:
-
Can I get a look at the rules? I can't guarantee it, but next week is possible for me. It s a kid-free weekend.

What a world.
Note that this pack, for some reason, repeats the standard rules for each of the games and includes a full counter sheet, so the 30-plus pages is deceptive.
-
Is it Thirty Years War Quad?
-
Yes.

I don't know.... I'm having a hard time keeping all these rules in my head at one time.... is there a simpler set of games we could try? Maybe Case Blue or something similar?
-
Something with meeples perhaps?

What sort of evil monster are you to post something like that? I don't even understand how someone can make a game that so clearly relies on the exploitation of post-people and the unfair treatment of correspondence. This sort of thing is not the subject for "play." In fact, I think we should never mention postal workers, letters, or the delivery thereof ever again.
Savages.

I am not sober, but, damn, I'm still laughing.

Savages?!?
How can any enlightened person dredge up and flippantly fling a Euro-centric, racist term for otherly developed peoples from humanities darkest years, anytime before 2010, and expect to be taken seriously.
Barbarians.

My first inclination is to call you out as having committed the fallacy of the wicked alternative, but, damn, my desire to play either game is so profoundly low that...damn...I dunno...

I like to sow befuddlement

I think that's a crop you can grow in Agricola.

How dare you call me a barbarian! I'll have you know that I habitually wear a chiton rather than trousers and only speak Greek.
Philistine.

So, we will NOT have a wheat orgy.
We will not ensure that the mail gets through.
We will not reap the abundance of the Earth's rewards. I still can't decide which I want to play least.
We will, however, I think, play games within the SPI 30YW Quad.
In my head, I'm running the camera and keeping folks apprised of how games are going and trying not to turn the whole thing into a digital blender. This may be naive, but there it is.
The games are:
1. Rocroi
2. Lutzen
3. Freiburg
4. Nordlingen
Who's in and wants to play what?
You KNOW Doug and I will play Lutzen for our own amusement without prompting, but I'd like to present games like this as vital, relevant options, if only for reference, in the current debate about wargames.
-
I will cheerfully play any one of these. If we're short handed, I'll play TWO.
I'm reading about Rocroi right now, for whatever that's worth.
-
I’m in for any of them... maybe even multiples... could be fun like multi board chess.
-
Rules read. Whew. Exhausting.
Inaccessible even!

Wallenstein's men were notorious colonialists. After Lutzen, there's nobody for him to cheer.
-
Reading these rules isn't so much "reading" and "remembering."
-
I watched part of Marco’s review and another one. The thing I wonder about his reviews and honestly many other reviewers is how many times to they actually play the games they are reviewing. I get you can have an intellectual or emotional response to a topic but I find the actual review of gameplay to be often be not very informative.
-
An excellent point. I suspect many time the games have only been played a limited number of times. I tend to find videos of actual game play more useful than reviews.
-
I rather watch a play through too.

I'm totally with you on this. I really can't accept that they do more than just give games a superficial scan. You have to play a game and get to know it before you can give informed comments on them. Its one thing to review the quality of the components and overall presentation, and that in itself is useful, but for me, that's as far as it goes unless we get some informed comments about actual gameplay.
-
Have fun tonight guys. I'm still at the county fair.
-
We'll be on late join if ya can.
-
-
Just a blast tonight! :bigthumb:
-
If you joined or if you watched, you know that this was gaming at its very best.
My goodness did I enjoy that.
Thanks everybody.
-
That really was very, very enjoyable. The game is a really elegant system. I'll play that anytime.
-
:bigthumb:
Although I did enjoy our game of 'Horse & Musket' on Vassal yesterday. Another very elegant and subtle system - even though Doug did give me a good drubbing!

We'll need to record and stream a game of H&M sometime soon. I wouldn't mind playing it for Saturday Night Fights, either.
I also would like to try Maurice. Maybe I can work up a TTS set up for it.
-
Problem with TTS, if problem it be, is that there’s so bloody much.
I’ve got:
An ESR learning game that the management there has expressed interest in.
The Quatre Bras BP2 game.
A Teugn-Hausen and an Eggmuhl for Blucher. And Doug and I must finish A-E.
Two 1809 SP2 setups. And I still want to finish Capt. Funn’s Whimsey.
Vance owes the world s Barkmann’s Corner rematch — with no wee hill.
A BP2 Omdurman.
A BP2 Khartoum,
And, based on Saturday, I want to MP SPI games until Hell won’t have it.
Plus October 19 is shaping up to be a Trafalgar refight using Fighting Sail. May start at noon if folks can make it.
