If I want a social experience, I'll Kriegsspiel...

Then he shouldn't have ridden over there in the first place! Probably forgot his funny hat...
-
Maybe he got shot at because they aimed AT his funny hat?
They likely had standing orders to shoot funny hats on sight.

Now, that wouldn't be sporting at all. Very ungentlemanly conduct! Bad form!

anyone seen the new Worthington Robin Hood game (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1456271622/robin-hood?ref=armchairdragoons)?
Looks a lot like an upgrade/remake of the old AH gamette with the usual Columbia block mechanics grafted on for combat.
-
Not my cup of tea, for I'm sure plenty of people will like it;

Yeah... with a map and counter for a completely different game included, Barbarossa to Berlin.
-
Sounds like they're throwing in the B-to-B stuff as an extra, but not needed to play this one? I wonder how much that changes the cost on this one that they decided to do that one.
At least you don't have to buy expansions to expansions of other games in the series just to play some of this one (like Avalanche or the old LNLP)

They're including deluxe components for another Ted Racier game. That's a problem? The p500 price is $52 US. Doesn't seem like there's much of an additional cost.
-
It may be that when you add the living rules for BtoB (a free download) you end up with a complete game.
-
Yeah, $52 is a great price for that game. Anything extra with it is just gravy.

New game coming from Thin Red Line Games - In Less Than 60 Miles
In Less Than 60 Miles, both sides must deal with three equally dangerous foes: the enemy, their own plan and time.
Players must handle the deceptively simple problems typically faced by Corps and Division commanders: move from point A to point B without messing up, organize a river crossing, properly deploy the troops for combat before the enemy starts to blow them in pieces.
Taking its roots from SPI’s Central Front and NATO: Division Commander, Less Than 60 Miles is the first of an operational simulation series focused on Command, Control and Communication.

Those back-screened icons under the unit symbols are a little too dark/distracting. Again, another game right in my wheelhouse, but not sure I can pay for it (still trying to figure out how to pay for Iron Sky)

Out of the two, it would be Iron Sky for me. For one thing I'm impressed by the artwork. I very much like the use of national flags.

If that's the remake of the game originally published by WWW, then it is indeed a damn fine game. A bit of trivia for you; the WWW map was done by Ina Clausen, who is the wife of game designer .Jack Radey. - he of Peoples War Games (Korsun Pocket, anyone?).

-
Yuk! No, its far too blobby and the text is too big.
-
I like that they are doing smaller, moderately priced games, but the counter art on this is a huge turnoff (the map is much nicer than the 1987 game)
https://www.consimsltd.com/shop/1950
-
Aye, the map aint bad but the counters are way too garish.
-
Most of the graphics you're seeing there are his playtest stuff. This is actually one guy in his mid-thirties working out of his apartment in NYC. His name is Ray Weiss. I've been doing some play testing for him, and he is on the right track. These are his first three games through the new company. I'd encourage you to give one of them a try, see how it goes. These are very SPI/GDW style games.
-
Sounds like an opportunity for a review or two ;)

Hi guys!
This is Ray from Conflict Simulations LLC. It's funny as part of the reason I didn't want to put playtest graphics up was that people would think they were final, but I was encouraged to otherwise! lol! But yes, you are looking at my very bad playtest maps, Ilya Kudriashov is doing the map for 1987 and it will be much better than mine, I promise :) Korea and 1950 have some previews of the maps on their pages I believe too, kindly let me know if something isn't labeled as a playtest version as well.
With love
Ray

Hello, Ray and Welcome!
Thanks for that info, its nice to know stuff like that. Generally speaking we do try and offer constructive criticism and I have no doubt that the hard core gamer's here will be happy to act as sounding boards for games that you are working on.
-
Hey Ray. Thanks for posting. Sorry if we came across as overly harsh. I do like the subjects/time periods of your games and will definitely consider them in the future.

Thank you Bob! Yes I am very happy to get all the crit I can, the more i f*ck up the better I will get I suppose ;) but I dont mind you guys leaving crit at all, I appreciate it and need it
Starting with the 5th game on 1864 in Denmark, counters will be done by a pro instead of me, just saved me a lot of money to get started to do all my own layouts and counters for the first few. I am clearly not talented in that department, but I think they are just about as functional if not a little more so for playing the games, if that's any bit reassuring :)
-
+10 What Mirth said ;)
I'd be very interested in a 1864 game as I have special interest in the period from the first war with Denmark in 1854 up to and including the Franco-Prussian war.

Few people know the central role that the 'stache played in the planning for the German victory in 1870. Von Moltke credited him with both the victory at Sedan and with making a tasty pot of tea every afternoon.

I don't quite no why, but that game irritates the devil out of me. Probably the opportunity cost. I've never forgiven the MB series for never doing a Nepoleonic game. Or "Heroscape" for not releasing the Old Guard figures THEY HAD DONE before the game was cancelled.

Designers should be forced to get a special license before being allowed to do a zombie game. One of the qualifications of said license if that they will never produce a wargame that includes zombies. Ever.

-
Three adjectives never described this lot of motley crew better, Bawb. ;D
-
Why would you want to be cured from that? I've waited all my life to get old enough to be able to get away with saying anything to anybody I want. To which they reply, " Awww. He's just a cute, old, miserable cynic. He just needs a hug".
-
Are you sure they add that last sentence?
-
No, the old git just added that bit on.
-
Oh no. They say it alright. They don't offer to do it, but they do say it. Sounds like 'hug' anyway. Could be 'drug', but it sounds like they saying 'hug'.

She's called round to the Council to have them send over someone as part of your elder care benefits to give you a proper smacking. The NHS is a wonderful thing.

Think of what they do as a sort of retrophrenology.
-
Creating the lumps instead of interpreting them? A sort of Phrenological Lithotyping then.
-
It seems logical that a skilled operator, with the careful application of a suitable blunt instrument, can, by tapping the head in the correct spot, enhance, or indeed, create, any ability desired by the tapee.
Obviously, the effectiveness of this procedure is governed by the amount of cash 'donated' by the tapee to the, erm, tapper.
I assume that the whole unlikely operation described above must be successful, since the tapper has usually rushed off to another appointment long before the tapee has, um, recovered sufficiently to test out their new or enhanced personal traits.
-
Damn, that's deep. I'll have to think about that some more. :silly:
-
Should you need any assistance in the cogitation department, I have a suitable blunt instrument handy if you have a valid credit card :-)
-
Only if swung by THE Mrs. Bob for the full effect.

You're asking for the full works by an expert, which don't come cheap!

;D Is she left-handed or right? Because I already got this big dent in head on the left side and I was going to try and even it out.

No worries; she's ambidextrous.

I don't really care about her sexual preferences, I just want to know which hand she uses best. Though, that could be of interest to some of the... less informed... types around here.

-
You perverts are inferring digital manipulation of reproductive organs, when we all know this is related to wielding frying pans single-handed or dual-weapon style. I think you get a -4 to your off-hand frying pan unless you've taken two levels of Ambidexterity (Frying Pan).
-
Nah - its just your dirty mind kicking in.

That was one of my last projects over there, to start working on WiF. But it was such a hot mess I pretty much gave up on it. I think that was one of the nails in my coffin over there, but they just didn't pay enough to deal with that much minutiae. ;D
-
I've fallen in and out of love with this game multiple times before-- never again. I really hope they make it playable at some point. And affordable too.
-
I had the original board game version, a lot of years ago. The concept was excellent, especially the naval rules, but there were so many issues with the rules as to render it pretty much unplayable.
-
I can't imagine a game that complex is ever really going to be playable as a computer game. It never seemed realistic to try to adapt it. Hell, it's barely playable as a face-to-face board game.

I'm just not a fan of board games at the small unit level like that. Would much rather play it out with minis.
That said, the artwork looks fantastic.

Yes, and, given my love/hate relationship with tactical WW2 games, and despite the fact that, yes indeed, the artwork is spiffing, I shall ignore this game to the best of my (admitted limited) will power.

they don't have their own booth at Origins anymore. They are rep'ed by Atlas Games, and supply a couple of bodies to help staff it

He's hitting a home run with The Fantasy Trip right now so I'm not surprised.

I looked over the exhibitor list and Steve Jackson Games has a moderate sized booth in addition to their gaming area.
that is excellent. He hasn't been there in several years so it's good to see him coming back like this. I suspect it's like Mike said, capitalizing on the recent success of the revivals

Did you guys read the reviews
Quite disappointed by the map's art. Could have been ok in the 80's, but obsolete by today's graphic standards.
Please get the place names right - all Umlauts are missing on the map (Göttingen, Münster, Düsseldorft, Gütersloh, Würzburg - just to name the ones that pop out immediately).
Only a 3.6 rating out of 5.
-
3.6 based on 5 reviews with 3 comments from 2018 (not even final map art).
The map looks fine to me and I don't really care about missing umlauts.
-
Yeah, I completely disregard “reviews” of a game that hasn’t even been printed yet.....

^ ^^Yeah, what them said

Yeah, I never understood how BGG gets ratings on games not even released, yet. Though I realize they do release early copies to some reviewers, but still...

It’s always a good idea to buy new socks and underwear once a decade.

Any good? I know they were pushing a "steamlined" version 3-4 years ago but that seems to have died. I guess the recent popularity of Osprey's Gaslands minis game got them to reconsider?

:o
-
:o Indeed!
-
Yeah, keep telling me how robust the market for wargames is...
-
This was expected for a while, honestly. TT is one of a long line of shady 'startups' by the same dude (Dan Yarrington (sp?) ) who has an extended history of failed / mismanaged Kickstarters and scewed-over creators.
He wasn't buying VPG to keep the niche/boutique wargame publishing alive. He wanted DotZ and Nemo's War and that ilk. The -20's and States of Siege games don't move the meter for a serial grifter who needs to continually refresh the buckets of cash he needs in the door to fend off lawsuits and set up new companies.
It's unfortunately that Alan (and the creative team) got caught up in this, but with a smorgasbord of options available to partner with out there, why willingly jump in bed with someone of Dan's reputation?
-
VPG ran from the tax hell of California, to hear the man who did it tell it, and then sold to a strip miner; a known strip miner.
Why?
Because "Mystery Wizard".
Because "Nemo's War".
And, yes, because "Twilight Struggle".
Because everyone else in our little Alamo is dropping over dead.
My and Jim Bowie will be over here.
Feel free to tell Antonio López de Santa Anna we said no parley.

I guess you’ll be sad to know GMT is also expanding it’s 18XX train game lineup.
-
I guess you’ll be sad to know GMT is also expanding it’s 18XX train game lineup.
Oh, don't think I missed that for a minute.
Still, that too is a niche that wishes to be fed. Dunno what the long game there is. You think we've got too many "Waterloos"...
-
I think GMTs long game is a diverse portfolio of games. I didn’t think there is anything nefarious afoot to slowly replace their wargame brand. Ultimately, GMT needs revenue to stay in business. It’s why their popular titles are generally always available. Games like Twilight Struggle, C&C, Combat Commander, and the COIN series.
Only GMT really knows the demographic information of sales but only from direct sales. How many people who bought a popular game also bought a more niche game? I suspect a few have and fewer have become repeat customers. I think forums, especially wargame forums, are misleading about sales. A small percentage buy “everything” but when you read some forums you’d think everybody is buying a lot of games. I simply do not believe that to be true.
I do think people are loyal to a brand and game series. 18XX players are rabid like ASL players about the series. Personally, I support two game companies regularly. GMT and MMP. I like some Compass Games designs but frankly I think they are ten steps behind GMT in production value for the prices they demand. Also I generally really dislike their color palette. Hideous, frankly.
As for as Napoleonics, the biggest issue is not tactical games. It’s all there is really. But try and find an operational or strategic game of the era. It gets considerably more difficult. In the end, Napoleon means nothing to the overwhelming majority of people. I disagree but I think that’s he case. Honestly, I just want Napoleons Triumph reprinted, however, the designer has publicly said she doesn’t want to.

I hope the VPG creators can buy the rights to their creations.
But the reason behind the guy getting control compared to the creators is as old as business itself. There are a lot of people who want to work in design or operations of any sort (manufacturing, logistics, etc...) that don't want the headaches of running the entire show. There are also creatives who frankly lack core management skill sets. And finally there are creatives who have the skill set and the desire but lack the capital to buy/create and operate a company.
I'm not slapping any individuals as I know none of them. But there are a lot of skill sets needed to run a successful small business. Not that many people have the skill set. And the marketplace is a brutal, brutal world.
QFT. This fits most of the designer/publisher types I know.
Beyond that, and this is somewhat in support of Cyrano's point, our little cul-de-sac doesn't produce enough business for a non-lifestyle business to succeed. There is never going to be another SPI. Tom & Mary at Hollandspiel are great at running a sustainable business that sells primarily wargames, but they aren't after building a huge enterprise.
IN VPGs case though, I'd argue that the ownership there made a host of really bad business decisions that culminated in the sale to TT. I was pretty convinced that the move from CA and the decision to not renew leases on their presses indicated that they were in serious, serious trouble.

More detail from Alan, from last year
https://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/171113?commentid=8193301#comment8193301 (https://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/171113?commentid=8193301#comment8193301)
Here's the story: my wife and I were ready to be done with the stress of running a game company; we enjoy making great games but could live without all the business headaches (government regulations, payroll, insurance, taxes, reviews, booking convention booths, shipping, sales, etc.). Folding The Little Game Company into Tabletop Tycoon means that our studio remains an ongoing entity -- as ever dedicated to making great games.
Dan made us a very fair offer, and everyone at VPG has stayed on and is still an employee at Tabletop. That was important to my wife and I -- that our people were taken care of, starting with our employees (naturally) and our customers. They are all "our people" whom we care about and have built trust and relationships with over the years, so our top priority was to obtain the best outcome for them. We had other offers, but Dan's was by far the best for our people.
Now, Dan and I have wrangled contracts together before. This was nobody's first trip to the rodeo! We are both very fair about things and, as always, found agreements and the right compromises on every occasion in our years doing business together. VPG is a good fit to enhance Table Tycoon's publishing side and, since we have already met everyone on the Tabletop Team and know we work well together, everything is going pretty darn smoothly during this transition time.
So, relax everyone. The time is coming soon when Dan can finally speak about "the lawsuit" (which, after our due diligence, I know more about than most but am NDA'd not to talk about that knowledge; suffice it to say that, obviously, there was less there than we at VPG imagined).
For now, think of me as Alan Emrich, Studio Head of the same great VPG team, working on the same great game projects with the business and sundry headaches now handled by Tabletop Tycoon (for which my wife and I are grateful). I look forward to a continued bright and busy future bringing you great games and applying our synergy to Dan's great team

*Camera dissolves back to present.*
*Alan, staring first into the distance, turns to bar companion with sad countenance. And shrugs.*
Me: So, how’d that work out for you?
-
I’m not sure what y’all would have him do. Don’t sell or sell the business. Make money but don’t sell product that isn’t a historic conflict. Honestly, outside of zombies or Nemo here wasn’t anything in the catalogue that was going to make enough money to keep the lights on long. Chadwick’s new East Front game was the latest big release but what else? I really like Napoleonic 20 but many “grogs” I’ve spoken with hadn’t even heard of it. GMT couldn’t even gain traction for the series with the Fading Glory release. The one post made clear the designers got rights back to their games and Chadwick has already signed on with GMT.
-
I really like Napoleonic 20 but many “grogs” I’ve spoken with hadn’t even heard of it.
I'd be in that group. Honestly, VPG hasn't much been on my gaming radar or my regular group's.
-
He seems to have given into the self-deceit of many who sell a modestly successful business in the hope of having the overhead lifted and getting more freedom to "create", viz.: once they've bought what they want, you are expendable. As, in this case, were the wargames. This the root of my moroseness on the topic.
I am surprised very smart people don't remember this. I -- who will never own a business if I can avoid it -- have seen this ruin lives fairly close to me. The words Brant cites above gave me a chill.
-
I can think of about a million other things I'd rather do than run a game company.
-
I can think of about a million other things I'd rather do than run a game company.
So few?
-
touché
-
I do understand. The times have changed for better or worse. The gaming industry is going through a similar process many other businesses have gone through in the recent decades. Small, local shops struggle to compete. In the board game world, Asmodee and a few other large publishing companies have the money and clout. Online retail is driving brick and mortar to the fringes and living off increasingly smaller margins.
I had the LGS order me a set of Army Painter brushes. It cost more than if I’d ordered them myself online. It’s a sad star of affairs IMHO but it’s the current reality.
-
You really have to be saavy to make it work, but for mom-and-pop retailers that has always been the case. Our local FLGS is very successful, but it is because the owner is very sharp and he lives the job. He knows MTG is bread-and-butter and he has built the business on that. He also carries way more stock on other games than he probably needs to, but when you go in it is very cool to see so many games under one roof.
He owns the building, he doesn't care that the exterior is kinda dumpy. He has maybe one full-time employee. He's there pretty much 7 days a week talking with people and making sales. He's an expert on the industry and is widely recognized as such nationally. It makes him a decent living and he genuinely loves it, but he's worked hard it for 25 years. He's also very cool about supporting things that are never going to be huge money makers for him. He hosts a monthly Bolt Action League and carries a sizeable amount of Warlord stock.

Worst box art for a war game ever. :idiot2:

Stop. This is the company that gave us the weird art for "Europe Divided" and included a warning that it depicted current events.
It is also the company that gave us both editions of "Brass" -- games that I will happily throw in the face of anyone who ever dares criticize wargames for their complexity.
And it is also the company that published "My Little Scythe".
Cheap suits off the same rack.
I like my U-Boot, though.
-
They also gave us a halfway-decent Ted Racier strat-level WWI game

I suppose it could be a murder mystery game about scheming soviet commissars...

Or the conversion from standard gauge to Russian gauge, which was wider than the rest of Europe.

I have a couple, and have about $200 worth on pre-order...and have been waiting a long time for them.
Ray has a love of SPI, and it shows in his games. In terms of mechanics, they feel very 1970s.
The game are physically smaller than I thought they would be. They are printed by Blue Panther, the same outfit that does Hollandspiele's games, so component quality is pretty good. Ray user the same map and counter artist as Tom & Mary as well, so there's some consistency in terms of art with Hollandspiele.
Rules and game mechanics are not consistent with Hollandspiele. Ray has been banging games out at a ferocious rate. I think QC has suffered. There are rules typos and inconsistencies.
I don't have the games you're talking about, so YMMV. I know Ray is committed to some quality improvements and he has striven to make good things that were wrong. I would say they are worth getting at a sale price, maybe a bit less at full price.

Just in case any of you were interested, the Steam Controller game pad-y thing is on closeout sale for only 5 bucks yankee.
It's a pretty neat device with it's touch pad and what not. If you use a game pad for some of your games I recommend it. Shipping is a bit steep but even after that it's still a great deal as compared to the original 50 buck price.

-
But you can convert the box into a garden shed :-)
-
You can make a good board game from a PC game and vice-versa, but the translation must acknowledged what makes its inspiration special, especially if you've got forms like these that are so radically different.
My interest in the PC port of "Gloomhaven" is nigh zero.
Playing Tiller's Squad Battles makes me realize that much of what draws us to WWII tactical games is actually a nigh-masochistic love of overhead.
And I am fairly confident I would prefer "Wolfpack" to "U-Boot".
Oh, and no game can be thought good in the modern era unless it has AWL TEH PEECEZ and costs at least $200 (+shipping).

If I had to pick one game, it would be this one;
https://www.compassgames.com/preorders/decision-at-kasserine-rommel-s-last-chance-designer-signature-edition.html
I remember playing the original 3W game way back and it was pretty good.
-
Besides the first mission of Gloomhaven, I was also able to play:
- Last Night On Earth. A great game in that it's very easy to pick up and play, is not at all fiddly, and doesn't take that long.
- The Networks. Really like the theme of this one, where you play a TV network (technically, with just three time slots - 8, 9, and 10pm) that starts with crap programming and has to try to gain the most viewers. It has a solo component that's quite enjoyable but personally I prefer to play it two- or even three-handed, instead.
- Marvel Champions. A good game, though I'm not a huge card/deck-building fan. I probably should not have acquired this one as I see tons of add-ons for this title.
- Betrayal at House on the Hill. While this co-op is not suited well for solo play, there are some end-game haunts that can be played solo. I played one game up to a haunt and found it a lot of fun, though having little kids as characters is extremely creepy to me.
-
A good variety. Sounds like you're doing some catching up :bigthumb:

While the link you provided doesn't actually lead to AH's Coral Sea game, it does serendipitously lead to a soon-to-be-released Cold War naval game which looks very interesting!
Cold War at Sea
Red Sky at Morning
(http://www.avalanchepress.com/gameRedSky_files/Red_Sky_sleeve_300.jpg)
It’s 1983, and Soviet Northern Fleet has begun its long-planned operation to break into the North Atlantic and disrupt the convoys bringing desperately-needed munitions and reinforcements from the United States and Canada to the battlefield that was once West Germany. Following the Concept of Maritime Operations as practiced in Operations Ocean Safari and Northern Wedding, the U.S. Second Fleet and allied NATO naval forces enter the Norwegian Sea to repel them.
Cold War at Sea: Red Sky at Morning is a game based on these intensively-planned operations that thankfully never actually took place. It’s a new series, drawing heavily on the concepts pioneered in our Second World War at Sea series of World War Two naval games.
You get the aircraft carriers, reconditioned battleships, cruisers, destroyers and frigates of the United States, Soviet Union, United Kingdom, Norway, Netherlands, West Germany and more. Submarines are now major combatants, with their own “long” playing pieces just like the surface ships and their own tactical resolution.
Missiles - launched from planes, ships, submarines and even helicopters - have altered the engagement envelope. Aircraft are both enormously more capable than those of World War II, and more vulnerable to sophisticated air defenses. Electronic warfare is now crucial; ships, submarines and aircraft are no longer passive targets but can take active measures in their own defense.
Like Second World War at Sea, Cold War at Sea has both an operational game (with scenarios taking place on the operational map, in this case of the Greenland-Iceland-U.K. Gap and the Norwegian Sea) and a tactical map (with battle scenarios taking place on a map much like the Second World War at Sea tactical map).
Like our other naval games, Red Sky at Morning is organized in our story-arc format, with the scenarios telling the story of this brutal naval campaign that never happened. Red Sky at Morning includes a double-sized operational map of the northern North Atlantic, 350 die-cut and silky-smooth playing pieces (210 “long” ship pieces and 140 normal-sized aircraft and marker pieces) and forty scenarios.

Hey submarinies!
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ctp/atlantic-wolves/?ref=armchairdragoons (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ctp/atlantic-wolves/?ref=armchairdragoons)
Some have called it the most crucial campaign of the Second World War. It was not fought on the ground with tanks and artillery; it was the Battle of the Atlantic, pitting the German wolfpacks versus the allied convoy system. Upon the result of the campaign hung the fate of Great Britain, and, by extension, the Allied cause in Europe.
Atlantic Wolves presents an example of an attempted historical naval blockade that almost succeeded. The game allows the player to explore the constraints and difficulties of enforcing a blockade with limited resources and an ever-closing technology gap. That players take the roll of the German commander is an artifact of history with respect to the war fought in the Atlantic.

Never mind about that; this is what I'm waiting for!

And he will

And as a solitaire guy, so will I. That one doesn't look interesting to me in any way.
-
No, I don't think I would find that very............immersive.
-
There's a folio game I got last Christmas called Battle of the Atlantic. Pretty simplistic but very easy to get into. Very challenging as you have to generate high totals of tonnage to come anywhere near victory, and that means taking a lot of risks.
https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/12202/battle-atlantic
-
I need to play PQ-17 someday.
-
I almost got that during the last GMT sale. It's 'only' $40 right now though on GMT's site.
-
I've owned it for years...sigh
-
And you laugh at me...lol
The block system/non-solo play kept me away. I know that's not an issue for you though. ;D

Solo....pffft

Paranoia or Tales From The Floating Vagabond.

Mutant Year Zero, FASA Star Trek, Dungeon Crawl Classics, or Savage Worlds? Play-by Post, Fantasy Grounds, Astral, or something on TTS like Saturday Night Fights? We could do Saturday Night Sorcery.

SNF is crushing it! We'd be like Jolt cola taking a tiny slice of the cola market. Although, now that you mention it there's a reason I haven't joined a session of SNF.

How about a RPG group where we all pretend to be know-it-all smart-asses that can't stay on topic, harass the moderators, and post Boob pics on every subject? :blahblah: I think that would work though we may have to humble ourselves a little. Just a little.

We have a couple of "other places" under our belt by now. I like this place. It's got the retro furniture and the funky locker room smell and empties everywhere and the cast of characters from a hundred failed sitcoms. Or maybe I'm visiting Mirth.
-
No, your'e right, Steelie - this place has definitely got the right ambience. We've even managed to tame one of Mirths socks and he's now quite a friendly little fella (the sock, that is).
-
Can he do tricks?
-
Who? Mirth or the sock?
-
Either one.
-
You do have to encourage him with the sharp end of a pointy stick first though.
-
My wife uses that on me as well.
-
Yes, but for one thing, you like it, and for another, you have all those...........special..............items of leather clothing.
-
And the oils. Don't forget the oils. You cannot have leather without a good oil for lubrication. I like cherry flavored. :D
-
Was was hoping that you didn't mention the oils.........
-
Your optimism is rather endearing. ;)
-
Its one of my many failings...........
I think of myself as being an optimistic pessimist, but Den says I'm just a prunehead.
-
I see myself as an optimistic skeptic. But I feel certain I maybe wrong about this.

could well be a reincarnation of it, since Jon Compton was part of GameFix back when that was published, and he's also the owner of Canvas Temple Games

Interesting. I have the original Der Kessel and had bought the re-make on Wargame Vault, but never printed it out. Anything Stalingrad and gaming, I'll keep an eye on. Thanks!

LnLT Digital gets a release date:
From LnLT Facebook page:

Will the core game itself have a built in scenario of some kind or will it be useless without one of the modules?
-
I believe it will come with 4 demo scenarios.
-
Good.

That looks very, very much like a game in development Cyrano and I looked at a couple of years ago at Origins. Definitely not from a French team, though. But the unit piece design is very close.

So Combat!2 - which is an addon for Combat! is $139...and you NEED Combat! to play it? That's an awful lot of mulah.

Ha, I didn't realize 2 required 1. That's hilarious.
I looked at mine but nope'd out of it pretty quickly. I hate to say it, but I don't need anything right now! GASP

Pre order for a reprint of Combat! is $99...i couldn't recommend it enough

The website doesn't say anything so it might just include errata
Doesn't matter - one of the best solitaire games I've ever played imo. It really oozes story and plays superbly.

Lookie look what just dropped on my front steps today...

Dang! I hope that means I get mine soon! :D

<pats pockets> nope. How unfortunate.
There is a used copy of MMP's 'Case Blue' on sale at Second Chance Games for £500

The funniest thing to me about this eBay auction is that it has a one year protection plan:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Avalon-Hill-Titan-Shipping-Box-to-Jason-McAllister-1982-/173925753765?_trksid=p2385738.m4383.l4275.c10 (https://www.ebay.com/itm/Avalon-Hill-Titan-Shipping-Box-to-Jason-McAllister-1982-/173925753765?_trksid=p2385738.m4383.l4275.c10)
-
Actually, you have to pay an extra $2.99 for the protection plan. Well worth it if you get an exact replacement in the event of factory defect.
-
"War of the Ring"? Never heard of it. What's it about, some dame didn't like the engagement ring he got her?

More like who has to clean the scum line around the inside of the bathtub.

Now you know what Gus was doing in the bathroom.

No one wants to know what Gus does in the bathroom.

I'll drink to that!

Apparently, I still have some mild PTSD from the earring incident.

Looks like the kind of game BC already has 2 unplayed copies of ;D

^ Nope, never heard of it. Though I do have something similar - AuZtralia - which I've played several times. It deals with a Cthulu-like invasion of Australia. We're covering it on the podcast in a few episodes.

War in the East 2 released today. Hard bound rule book.
https://www.matrixgames.com/game/gary-grigsbys-war-in-the-east-2
-
this 520-page hardbound full-color manual
Holy hell. :o That alone almost makes me want to get it, despite the game's price and high grognardi-ness levels.
-
Patience, my son. It will eventually go on sale.
-
If you can guarantee there will still be physical copies of the manual available by then, I'll be content to wait, sure. :P
-
After buying the World in Flame manuals, I don't see the point in buying physical copies of game manuals anymore. :-\
-
The first War in the East came with a hardbound manual as well, which I have. Is that now obsolete?
-
After buying the World in Flame manuals, I don't see the point in buying physical copies of game manuals anymore. :-\
Partially, I miss the sheer novelty that paper manuals have become. But generally speaking, I also genuinely prefer looking things up in a physical manual/rulebook (as opposed to googling/searching online). I'm strange that way.

I'm the same. I work on a PC all day programming - the last thing I want to do is use a PC to read.
Also - regarding this game...I would love to want it - and I do - but I'm just very wary that I had War in the East and War in the West, both with hardbound manuals and at considerable expense - and I hardly played them. My concern would be the manual would sit with the other game manuals and the game would occasionally be installed and uninstalled several times.

Probably, but probably not to the point of being unusable.
-
I just submitted a First Impressions piece for the site on WITE2. I did not play WITE1 so I can't speak to any of the differences, but it's my understanding there's been a lot of improvements.
I'd say the WITE1 manual is better to have than nothing at all, but you'd need the new one if you want to explore all the nooks and crannies of WITE2...and there's a LOT of them.
-
I am weak :'(
-
I eyed WitE1 for a *long* time, but ultimately shied off -- not unlike my "relationship" with WitP:AE (and for a lot of the same reasons)...and now here I am, just about ready to pull the trigger on this one. I simultaneously find monster wargames like these intensely intriguing, and utterly intimidating.
I just submitted a First Impressions piece for the site on WITE2.

Yes :Loser:
-
It is most noble of you to volunteer being the guinea pig. :) Post impressions (whenever you get around to playing it)!
-
I wasn't firing it up until I had the manual because - you know - I'm not procastinating - I just like to have the manual so I can look at it and wonder what the contents are like and how it's going to help me play the game - even though I won't read the damn thing and so I'll never play the game because, you know - I haven't read the manual.
And......just bought the DCS Mi-24 Hind module - that I'll never likely fly more than very, very occasionally!
-
Hmm, I'm trying to remember the last time I actually used a physical game manual to help me with a computer game. (https://www.aarcentral.com/emoti/JC_thinking.gif)
-
Before I even look - is there a fully understandable process for the battles and their outcomes - I want to know why I won, I want to know why I lost
My only experience with this system is WitP and that had a version where all the major land action was taken out it was that bad
I stopped playing WitP because if you lost something you should have won and went to query it in the forum there were a hundred, did you do this, did you do that, did you make sure and then a shrug from the devs with a final ‘wellllllll you know fog of war’ 😤😤
-
'Fog of War' is a great catch-all though, and can be used to cover a multitude of sins.

Thank you for making me feel better about never having gotten around to purchasing WitP:AE, ucg. You're a prince among men. 8)
-
Heh, you’re welcome - I love the concept of the grand campaign but when you lose irreplaceable carriers as the IJN after setting the cap, setting the cap at the right height, setting the right amount of cap and they do nothing to intercept an incoming attack, after gnashing your teeth and pounding the keyboard it’s time to go home

Greg's got plans for a lot of stuff...not sure what the video pointed out but I'm sure it mentioned his Japanese submarine solo game (WW2-based), Western Front Ace, and several others.
I have Amerika Bomber but not Defending America. It would be interesting to maybe run both games together so if I ever pick it up...

End of year wargaming roundtable tonight in LNLP's YouTube channel.
I'm part of the panel; please watch anyway!
-
I've been keeping an eye on the LnL site to follow the progress of an old Panther game which LnL have had on their pre-order list for ages; 'Trial of Strength', but looking today, it seems to have completely disappeared.
-
just arrived today
-
I'm curious to get your views on Zurmat. The building infrastructure and gaining influence aspects of the game looks interesting.
-
Right now I think it has a very pretty box 😎
(Not even opened it yet)
-
If I didn't know better, I'd have thought it was the cover of a book.

In what is "only" the second-biggest merger/acquisition in the history of gaming industry, Take-Two is merging with Zynga for an estimated $12.7 billion.
https://www.pcgamer.com/take-two-and-zynga-merge-in-the-biggest-deal-in-gaming-history/
Zynga appears to be mostly notable for mobile games, so meh. I only really posted the news since Take-Two owns notable franchises such as Civilization and Bioshock.

It's about damn time. :applause:
The Grammy Awards adds a dedicated videogame category (https://www.pcgamer.com/the-grammy-awards-adds-a-dedicated-videogame-category/)

:o

Honestly, with all the amazing soundtracks we've seen (heard) just in war/strategy games, never mind in other genres, this was *long* overdue.

Good point, Sam :bigthumb:

Because of the following announcement from GMT, I think it prudent to give Cyrano some space so he may grieve appropriately.
From GMT's June 2022 newsletter:
P500 Removals. In mutual agreement with the design team, we are removing Mystery Wizard from the P500 list today. This game probably wasn't the best fit for the GMT line, as the stalled P500 numbers would attest, and once we lost the dedicated artist for the game after only a few card images, we were just not able to find an artist up to taking on the whole project. Although Mystery Wizard unfortunately didn't work out for us, I still believe in both the game (it's fun!) and the team of talented young designers and developers who created it. I wish them all the best as they work to get the game published with another publisher. Once that happens and there is an order page up for it, I'll make an announcement in our monthly update and link to the new publisher's page so that those of you who want the game will know where to order it.

Awww. And it had hexes, too.

A good idea, in theory. As ever, though, I am skeptical about its efficacy.
Epic Games Store introduces rating system designed to stop review-bombing (https://www.pcgamer.com/uk/epic-games-store-introduces-rating-system-designed-to-stop-review-bombing/)

Funny, I see review bombing on BGG all the time, especially in Ty Bomba games. He usually rates his own games a 10, and someone invariably comes in and rates it a 1 because "designers shouldn't rate their own games." :2funny:

Well, they're not wrong. Ha!

Continued our game of Stellar Horizons that we started two weeks ago. We made it through another two decades of game time today and ended our session about halfway at 2080, so we're about halfway through the scenario. I'm playing as Japan. I have been playing as Russia in an online, PBEM game and got used to playing the game to the Russian faction's strengths. Japan happens to be the polar opposite of Russia in this game and, as a consequence, I seriously misplayed the first two decades (2030-2040). I did get very lucky and managed to succeed in all the missions I've drawn so far and am far ahead in VPs from that, but the N. American player is poised to break out and start colonizing the moons of Jupiter. The Pan-Asian player had some terrible luck in the 2050 decade with both of his major manned missions suffering catastrophic failures. One blew up on launch, costing the human crew, the Mars-bound vehicle, the supplies intended to build a base there, and the launch vehicle. The other exploded while returning from a survey mission to the moon. They have managed to set up mining operations in the near Earth asteroids however and are in a good position to start ramping up resource production and trading. The Americans are growing isolationist and keep trying to ratchet up diplomatic tensions to the point where they'll be able to blockade trade routes. Japan has the ear of the UN and enjoys a significant advantage in political clout but has little in the way of income or a manufacturing base. I have a large orbital research station above Earth that keeps me competitive in tech and I've just built a refinery on Phobos but it's still a only a skeleton crew out there. I'm going to need to expand that rapidly if I want to get out to the moons of Jupiter before the Yankee imperialists lay claim to all of it.
