Title: Shadows of Brimstone
Post by: panzerde on September 22, 2018, 12:51:08 PM
Played this last night with van Hoose and a couple of his buddies at Books and Brews. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the game. When I first arrived and saw all of the cards I kind of groaned internally - I'm not usually thrilled by CDGs, though I'm not as immediately repelled by them as I used to be.

It ended up being a really well thought out GM-less RPG system. The game we played was a Weird West setting, which I think helped. I'm kind of burned out on the traditional fantasy space.  It was a learning game for all of us, and we made mistakes with the rules, but in the end everyone had a great time.

It's very lightweight in terms of character creation since the characters are on pre-printed character cards. About the only up-front decision-making to be done involves some initial gear choices once you've decided what character to play. The rest of the adventure is card driven, so there's no planning that needs to go on before hand to start playing. Once a character hits the end of a map piece and looks into the next room, you draw a card, see what the next map piece is, put it down and keep going.

I believe we'll be playing some more now that we've learned the game mechanics. It feels like there's a lot of replayability even in the core game (looks like there's a ton of expansions, too) due to the CDG nature of things. This is something I could entice the kids and their SOs over to play with Terri and I. I might have to see if I can coax someone into getting this for me for Christmas...

I've look at it a few times and wondered how good it is, as it really intrigues me. Lots of expensive add-ons for it now as well :-(

Looked awesome, but I sold my base + 2 expansions before I moved. They were just too damn big! :(

I've just been on its BGG page. There is an amazing amount of stuff out for it - would cost a fortune to get it all. I didn't realise how popular it is.

We were just playing the base game and we had enough stuff on out to cover three tables. It's a huge mass of stuff.

I had Frontier Town, which adds a lot of between adventure stuff, and Caverns of Cynder. There are some other cool expansions too.

You expect that out of a Fantasy Flight game, but not usually from other folks.

That was exactly what the guy that owned the game said last night, verbatim.

That Amazon listing is nuts. Looks like it can be had for about $100 direct from the publisher.

A lot of stuff like that on amazon is at stupid prices.

Look at this for a typical example;
