Naval rebalance

Looks like mostly promising changes, but players are still concerned about death/doomstacks.

I have had HoI III for a long time, but sadly, never really been able to get into it.

I loved hoi3 - my most played steam game after an epic aar as Italy when at the old place

Hoi4 just seems very ‘generic wargame’’ to me - it could be any war at any time any where

You did some great AAR's for that game.

Defeated Germany just before they turned back from Russia and started on me and got Norway and Vichy France in the peace talks - was a great game

Made for some great reading though, as did you Crusader Kings AAR's.

That is another game that I have had for ages and have never been able to get into. I feel so......inadequate.  :'(

I think a problem with all the games we like is theres no discernible end - no ta da you’ve finished here’s your score - not with out some major time invested anyway - they’re all massive time sinks - sometimes I crave for a game that’s done and dusted in an hour so you can complete the gaming package, start, middle, end, get a score in an hour and feel you’ve played a game as opposed to scratching the surface of the game you’re playing

Same feelings here UCG.  I really enjoy HoI III, warts and all but I just can't get into HoI IV.  I just bought a bunch of DLC for it on sale and I've been trying to play but I find it very frustrating.  I like to micro my forces so I barely touch the battle planner.  When I do use it, the AI just does bone headedly stupid things and moves units around that it has no business moving.  At least I can choose to ignore the battle planner and just take the planning bonus hit and micro my units for land war.  The air and naval aspects are absolutely horrid.  The naval combat graphic is pointless and very poor at conveying information (as is most of the game) and the air war is so hands off that it might as well not be included in the game at all.  I really don't like the fact that finding information as to unit casualties is much harder to access in IV than in III and I also don't like the fact that you don't get adequate alerts when air or naval units are taking a beating and they'll just merrily continue throwing themselves at the enemy until they're wiped out without making a peep.

Even typing this is making me irrationally angry.  RAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored:

When I first learned to play, I played as Italy.  It's a country that's just the right size with enough going one to keep it interesting but not overwhelming like some of the others.

I will recall playing that initially-(1st edition) "as" the "Soviet Union" WITH 'bartering' through "U.K." to obtain 'Aircraft Carrier'-technology! STILL another "were" that NES/SNES "P.T.O."/"P.T.O."-2 where you can 'design' "Missile Launching Vessels", or "Jetplane Fighters/Bombers" aboard 'A. Carriers', and we DID!

Anyone here playing HOI IV with the Millennium Dawn mod?
If not I highly recommend giving it a try.

I guess not judging from the lack of interaction.  It really is a pretty good mod.

I think it’s more the game than the quality of any mods - turds and polishing come to mind

Yet it remains Paradox's most-played game -- and by a fairly hefty margin, if I'm not mistaken.  Even CK3 can't compete, numbers-wise.  However flawed Hoi4 might be, they must be doing *something* right.  ???

Most-played.

One need only check out the current SteamDB charts (https://steamdb.info/graph/) to verify that:  In the top 100 games, Hearts of Iron IV is currently sitting at 26,132 players, which easily tops Europa Univeralis IV (15,130), Cities: Skylines (13,466), Crusader Kings III (12,790), Stellaris (11,663), and Across the Obelisk (10,004).  Those numbers are pretty consistent with what I've seen in the past.

Paradox has mentioned on more than one occasion that HoI4 is their most-played game.  I've heard that's at least partially due to the modding community, though I can't say anything about it myself (as I don't own the game).

Ah I see what you mean.  To be honest I played HOI IV when it first came out and loved it a bunch.  But after a while I got burnt out.  I doubt I'd play a single player vanilla campaign again so that is why in order to try to breath new life into the game I look for mods.

But then again...I agree, polishing waste matter isn't going to make it any prettier.

Me too.  I tried.  Recently, I bought a bunch of the DLC for HOI 4 in the hope that they would flesh out the game experience and refine some of the clunky features.  I forced myself to learn the system and the played through 3 full campaigns from 1936 to the end of the war.  I came away disliking the game even more now than I did upon 1st release.  This feels like it's been stripped of nearly all history and is now just a generic sandbox "what if" simulator with a thin veneer of WWII themed chrome laid on top.  I went back to HOI III with the Black Ice mod and had a much more immersive and rewarding experience playing though that (once the misery of reorganizing the military was done....)

I have not.  When I play, which isn't a whole lot, I use either BlackIce or End of the New Beginning, which is a steam mod, but updated a lot more often on github.
