Well, the boys and I are continuing my journey down memory lane. We are getting a starter Carrera Go!!! track.
I loved my old AFX track. However, I decided to move from 1/64th scale up to 1/43 scale. I really wanted to go for 1/32 but the cost is significantly more for the Carrera Digital system (allows 6 simultaneous drivers on two tracks with change lanes, pit stops, etc...) and the Dudes tend to break things. So for learning track the price and increase in car/track size is perfect.

Oh heck yes. I had a load of Scaletrix stuff as a kid, My best car was a Shelby Cobra :-) Happy memories indeed.
-
PICS!
-
What pics?
-
'Pics,' not Picts. ;D
-
I'm talking about a lot of years ago - I doubt I even owned a camera then.

PICS!
Should've been cleared - that was directed at Bison.
Bob's 'pics' back then would've been cave wall art....

It was a difficult decision whether to go with Carrera or Scaletrix and HO scale was still a strong option. A few factors lead to my decision. I think the slightly larger scale will be easier for the boys to control. Cost. AFX track sets are pretty spendy and at the same price point as the Carrera Digital. Availability. I could order a track set and a couple of track options (lane change and some extra curve/straights to replace the loop to loop at some point) for about the same as the available smaller track length Scaletrix.

I'll post some once the big reveal day comes and we get it setup.

^.....if you can stop playing with it long enough............
(I just know somebody will add some innuendo to that)

Maybe if Mrs. Bob knew of this slot car magical power, she would buy you one to play with too. 🤭
-
No, but I have a 4 year old grandson who will likely be very interested - Once this lock-down has ended, I may have to introduce him to the joys of slot car racing :-)
The gear is much much sophisticated (and expensive) than it was 50+ years ago.
-
The basic Carrera Go!!! sets are much more reasonable. In the US, it’s like $40 for 2 cars and controllers with a basic figure eight track. I saw a similar scaltrix set too. I opted for a slight upgrade to get the power inverter rather than use batteries and a slightly larger track.
But without question a big set with lots of tracks and all the add on stuff can get very expensive quickly.

A friend of my when we were kids had a huge setup on a 4x8 sheet of plywood. We all bought our own cars and had series races. Even had wiper changes and replacement tires.
Good times. :bigthumb:

Wow, I didn't know that slot car/racing was even still a thing. That's awesome, Bison! Hope you and the boys have fun. :bigthumb:

Very cool, looking forward to the pictures. My little guy is just starting to get into matchbox cars and tracks. I'll be curious if he ever shows an interest in slot cars.

Oh it's still a thing and it has a pretty dedicated hobbyist community and is have a bit of a resurgent with 1/24th slot clubs.

Sounds like an opportunity to me for future bonding time. The Carrera First sets are battery-powered small sets designed for 3+.

I think you should take a peek to ensure all is in order. Just think of the disappointment on the day if there was something missing or not functioning

He's right you know.
-
wtf is this?
-
Pure awesomeness. 8)

Holy crap those things move fast. How the heck do they tell who's winning?

I guess colour and some counter as they go over the line? No idea.
I'm not sure there's any skill there. If the cars (and I'm not sure they were cars) stay on the track regardless, what's the point? With slot cars (Scalextric we refer to it as) you had to adjust your speed going round some bends
-
Yes, it does seem from that film that there is not much of a need for any skill, which seems to distract from the fun of it.

I appreciate the encouragement into temptation but the Mrs. would do horrible things to my person.

They are controlling the speed but that particular race appears to focus on the building of the 1/24th car.

I'll take some photos tomorrow but it's pretty darn fun to be slot racing again. 4 track configurations broken up by building multiple Lego sets have taken their toll on me.

Heh, yeah that would make for a rather long day. :) Look forward to the photos!
