Dear Folk,
I'm new to the Forum. I'm interested in purchasing a first game in the Wargame Design Studios ACW series.
What are your opinions about the best games of the series, and why?
Thanks,
Mike

First off, welcome to the forums!

I just recently purchased my first WDS ACW game and after some recommendations went with Campaign Gettysburg due to the amount of scenarios in the game as well as a familiar battle to help me learn the system. Played around with a few scenarios to get a feel for the game and the someone offered to help me learn the game via PBEM and I jumped right into the full Gettysburg scenario. I might have bit off a little more than I can chew but while I'm still learning as I go it is an absolute blast.

Welcome to the forums. I played several of them years ago but I enjoyed the Chancellorsville and Peninsula games. The games are a lot of fun if you have a regular PBEM opponent but, unfortunately, the AI is not a good long-term opponent.

I find it kind of boring, to be honest.  There just aren't a lot of campaigns there that interest me that much.

This is going to get covered on a podcast this season  :)

edit to add:  this is not an indictment of the games from WDS.  I have no idea if their ACW games are good or not b/c it's not a conflict I would even try.
also, sorry to derail an advice thread - my primary point was welcoming a new member to the barracks!

Although Gettysburg is my favorite battle, you may want to consider starting with one of their newer ones, Forgotten Campaigns or Shenandoah.  Little smaller battle sizes which might be a good way to be introduced to the series, plus they represent all their latest work with graphics/updates, although they tend to update the older titles as well.  Plus for me, kind of like that these battles were a little more unknown to me versus the ones we all play all the time (i.e. Gettysburg, Shiloh, Antietam, etc.)..
