[Argh.  I meant to start this thread ages ago...]

At least a few of you already know about this project:  Several years back, a software programmer named Ray Fowler began working on a modernization of the first Master of Orion game.  He's invested a considerable amount of time and money (mostly on outsourcing new music and artwork) into the project, with the eventual goal of making the game available free to all (mostly so as to not run afoul of Wargaming.net, who still hold the rights to the MOO franchise).  On Christmas Day (2021), Ray finally released ROTP v1.0...

What spurred me to finally remember to post about this game is that Ray just dropped version 1.04:

The patch includes a number of fixes, plus adds Hungarian translation, bringing to 18 the number of languages the game supports.  :)

You and me, both.

For all that I may gripe -- and do :P -- the reality is that we enjoy almost an embarrassment of riches when it comes to good games these days.  It's hard to remember/keep track of them all!

Explorminate's BATTLEMODE just finished his epic-length review of ROTP (rivaling his massive 2-part review of Shadow Empire):

Short version is, he likes it.  I don't think that will come as a huge surprise, but on the other hand, ROTP isn't going to be for everyone.

What developer Ray Fowler has done is amazing, but it's important to emphasize that it truly is a modernization of the first Master of Orion game -- it's not a sequel, or even a remake, really.  If you enjoyed MOO1, then you should enjoy ROTP; but if MOO1 wasn't your cup of tea, then ROTP isn't going to be for you, either.  Still, huge kudos to Ray for his efforts these past ~6 years!
