After seven(?) years of development, the game has finally launched on Steam Early Access:

I'll admit I'm not as excited about this one as I once was, for a myriad of reasons I won't get into.  It's definitely still pretty rough; I honestly can't recommend picking up the game in its current state.

Still, I'm glad to see Lord of Rigel actually seeing the light of day at last.  Fingers crossed the devs can finally see their vision achieved!

Whenever I see the name 'Rigel', I immediately think of 'Farscape'  ;D

Well it actually happened:  After an entire decade (yes, a decade) of development, Lord of Rigel has finally released as a full game.

Initial impressions:  I like the content, and overall gameplay seems to be solid.  However, colony management is very bare-bones, and performance is severely lacking.  The game lags like hell, and turn times get pretty ridiculous after a while.  Optimization improvements are badly needed.

Fortunately, the developer has been releasing frequent patches (well over a dozen) since the game released three weeks ago, and has been very responsive to player feedback.  Recent reviews have been mostly positive, so it would appear his efforts appear to be bearing some fruit.  I plan to check out the game again in another few weeks or so; I'm guessing t it'll be in a markedly better state by then.

One thing I find worth noting:  I find it interesting that Rhombus Studios ended up parting ways with Iceberg Interactive.  According to comments made by Adam, the lead developer, apparently this was due to Iceberg trying to force them to make a more conventional space 4x, rather than the one Rombus wanted to make.  So I at least have to give the devs credit for sticking with their vision.

The dev posted a Let's Play:

I like the overall gameplay & mechanics, but I admit I wish the game felt more...lively.  It often feels rather dry.

Normally I'd jump on a game like this but I'm just too tired of all these games that pop up sounding great and end up being an unfinished, bug filled mess.
Just from glancing at my Steam library (I'm sure there's a lot more titles in there):

Apollo4x
Astra Exodus
Dawn of Andromeda
Falling Stars: War of Empires
Galactic Inheritors
Galactic Ruler
Pax Nova
Predestination

I think I've been permanently cured of Day One Purchase Syndrome.

In fairness to Lord of Rigel, I don't find it a bug-filled mess or anything.  I just find it...kind of boring right now.

Which makes me sad, because design-wise, I like what the game is doing.  it's just somehow falling short in the implementation, and/or perhaps presentation.  :-\

Man, you suck at picking 4x games, if that's your list (I only own 2 of those).  But we'll set aside your questionable tastes for the time being.

I do get what you're saying, though.  For as admittedly pumped as I get for the majority of 4x games when they're announced, even I rarely end up buying them on release day (or even release week).  The odds are too high that they don't pan out.

;D That's just some of the bad space 4x games that I own. There's a good list that probably much larger than that. I'm a sucker for turn-based, 4x games.  :-[
