Title: Five formative (war)games?
Post by: bayonetbrant on July 14, 2021, 01:34:44 PM
There's a Twitter thing bouncing around right now tagging lots of people and asking them to list 5 games that made them the gamers they are today.  While clearly wargame-focused, a lot of people have listed RPGs and even an occasional Euro or two.  Plus Sebastian include Risk: Game of Thrones, because of course he did.

Our Twitter acc't got tagged 2 different times, but while I'm the main dude running it, it's not my personal account and is instead supposed to represent the site as a whole.  So let's see if we can't come to some sort of consensus amongst the group here and try to get ourselves down to 5 or 6.

Here's what I listed for "us" as a group, but will quite happily accept suggestions to change and swap.  BUT, it's not just what influenced you individually.  Think about the group as a whole and what you might see as our aggregated list that best encapsulates our whole community.

So while ModQuad 1 & 2 are very important for me, I'm pretty sure I'm the only one here in the group that applies to.

Similarly, NLB wasn't a big deal to me, but I suspect it was to quite a few folks here.  But if I'm wrong, that's fine - let's change it!

I'd say, for me:

It's difficult to quantify an exact set of five titles for me, but these were all impactful for me in the 80s when I came into my own and finally had my own buying power (limited, but mine) to purchase games on my own.

I'm pretty old school, so I'd say:

Risk
Battle of the Bulge/Stalingrad/Afrika Korps/Blitzkrig/France 1940 (similar mechanics, different battles)
Midway
Panzer Blitz/Panzer Leader
Advanced Squad Leader

Wacht Am Rhein (SPI)

Battle for Stalingrad (SPI)

SL (as BC said, not ASL)

Sonewall (S&T)

Cobra (S&T)

I might ought to abstain here; in my formative years I was broke and couldn't afford these fancy games y'all are listing. As in...

1. Cerberus: The Proxima Centauri Campaign

2. Asteroid Zero-Four

3. Star Fleet Battles (Why, yes, I'm from Amarillo. Why do you ask?)

4. The Siege of Constantinople

5. Fletcher Pratt's Naval War Game (This is the one that got me back into wargaming and into miniatures.)

So, yeah. Go, Team Napoleon's Last Battles!

The Siege of Constantinople (S&T) was not a bad game at all.

How is it even possible for individuals to think about what influenced other to play anything?

Oh yeah, Car Wars we played that to death back in the day.

Most of us have known each other for a long time.

Plus, thinking about the common ground we share, and the kinds of games that helped shape that common ground and helped gotten the community, what would you come up with?

Not just the aggregate of our individual games...

Steel Panthers (in some form) has to be a formative wargame for at least some of us here. When it first came out I was blown away by it. I'd been reading about the development in some of the gaming mags for a few months prior and getting more and more excited. It wasn't the first of it's kind, as there were games such as The Perfect General, WCS: Tanks, and even Battle Isle (for a scifi take) that went for the 'digital minis' style but Steel Panthers just seemed to take it to a new level, with all the unit command link stuff, preplanned artillery barrages and airstrikes, and whatnot else. And the graphics (for the time) were pretty neat.

Diplomacy, aye  :bigthumb: And we played a lot of 'Escape from Colditz' and 'Sorcerers cave'

From the podcasts, you all talk about the Civilization game series A LOT. Either the series or one of the specific Civ games should be on that list.

As I posted in that chain discussion and the theme is - five games that shaped the individual as a gamer that it is today.
The way I interpret is the games that one way or another, by the sheer impact of lore, mechanisms of play, social interaction, shaped the gamer personality ( which in so many cases can be seen in the games they usually share )

In my case were these five ( i would post 10 but I tend to follow the rules :P )

- Battletech (FASA)
- Darklands (Microprose)
- AD&D Birthright (TSR)
- Warhammer Fantasy RP 1e (Games Workshop)
- Mordheim ( Games Workshop )

No love for Stratego? You want, 'Old School', how about American Heritage's Battle Cry? Waterloo was my first Avalon Hill game followed by Midway. For computers it was the original, Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord. Since I'm only allowed 5, I'll stop there.

AD&D 1e
Conquest of the Empire
Axis & Allies
Guns of August
Bull Run

I am sure others were equally important but frankly that's about all we owned other than several other RPGs like James Bond and Champions.

James Bond RPG, indeed. I loved that system.

Also Top Secret.
