Title: Star Fleet Battles, no thread?
Post by: Putraack on July 12, 2023, 05:28:12 PM
I didn't find a thread to discuss one of the longest-lasting games out there.

Any current or former players?

I still play online sometimes, I'd be up for a few matches now and again.

I have a monthly in-person group to play, too, if anyone's in or around Ohio.

Incredibly, I've never actually played it in my entire life.  Always wanted to give it a try, though.

I moved over to Federation Commander.

Still have my original box from 1979 (plus various expansions) but I haven't played it in quite a while. I also own Federation & Empire, Federation Space, Federation Commander (Klingon & Romulan Border), Star Fleet Battle Force, and Star Fleet Marines: Modules I & II. I'm not quite ready to dive back in yet as I plan to start learning Federation & Empire sometime soon.

Martok, come to Origins. I'll bring SFB and/or Federation Commander!

OK, so a WED night game at Origins?  Turn 3 should wrap up by Saturday morning, right?

Nah, we'd both be at beginner's level and only have 1-2 ships each. More like a Friday morning wrap up. Unless we play Federation Commander and finish by Thursday morning.

I'll go one step further and one step more obscure but...

Has anyone ever played Star Frontiers or even knows what game that is?  It had a very simple but very enjoyable ruleset for space ship battles.

I was a BIG fan of KnightHawks when it was the Star Frontiers space battle game.  Been a long time since I played it, of course, but 7th grade me enjoyed it.

If you want to open up a KnightHawks thread, we can certainly do it :)

But I'd hate to hijack the SFB thread when these guys will need it to organize their game at Origins next year!  >:D

You bring Fed & Emp next year and I’ll show up.  :bigthumb:

Hmm, Origins is a year away, I'm not sure that's enough time to learn F&E.  :D

I fumbled through played a couple matches of F&E approximately a million years ago; so I'll pretty much have to relearn it, for all practical purposes.  :P  I seem to recall the rules weren't terribly onerous, however.

Cool, Martok, I didn't know you had played F&E.  :bigthumb:
I've been looking for a good online tutorial for F&E but haven't found one. I may have to learn the rules and create one myself.  :P

Thanks Brant!  I might just put together some thoughts and open a thread for this.  I think I was also in 7th or 8th grade when I discovered the KnightHawks system.

As long as no one retreats, the F&E rules aren't at all bad, IMO.

At Buckeye Game Fest this week, I found some players for SFB: 2 who hadn't played before and 2 who hadn't played in a long time, so I refereed some (re)teaching games. One duel of tournament ships and 2 back-to-back plays of an old 1v1 scenario, the players switching sides after one play. A newbie won the first duel, a veteran won both plays of the scenario.
