For the first time ever, an Army general officer is heading to Marseilles, France, to command France's 3rd Armored Division.

U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Todd Wasmund and French Brig. Gen. Hubert Cottereau are the first approved exchanges in the U.S. Army's Military Personnel Exchange Program (MPEP).

Wasmund is set to begin his assignment early next year, according to the Army, while Cottereau, who will take over as deputy commanding general for readiness of the 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, will start this summer after arriving at Fort Stewart earlier this month.

The Army said that exchanges will last between two and three years and are meant to "strengthen bonds of friendship, understanding, and interoperability between the countries and their respective military operations."

While this is the first exchange with France, it's not the first exchange for the Army. In September 2015, the Army established the first exchange with the United Kingdom; according to U.S. Army spokesperson Matt Leonard, the program is partnered with 17 countries.

Wasmund is currently the deputy commanding general for support for the 1st Infantry Division, per the Army. Stars and Stripes reports that he has deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, and recently deployed with the Army Europe's Mission Command Element in Poznan, Poland, as deputy commanding general.
"The program has both tangible benefits of enhancing interoperability and supporting theater security cooperation objectives," Leonard said."And intangible benefits of relationships that include understanding and respect of cultural and procedural differences."
