Too many things to go wrong - maintenance to keep 'em flying must be a nightmare, especially under operational conditions. Bring back the Harrier, I say.

I still can't understand why they didn't go for a conventional carrier with modified Euro fighters. I gather that the Typhoon would have been perfectly capable of being modified for carrier use.

I don't really get that either. I guess it was a cost issue for the carriers. A CATOBAR system is a lot more expensive than adding a ski-jump ramp to the bow flight deck.

Unfortunately, given on how the cost of the F35 has escalated, it has probably proved to be false economy.

I suspect the RN was focused on getting the carriers funded first and worry about the air wing later.

Maybe so, but successive governments couldn't make up their minds about what config carrier to build. You have to wonder how closely the RN was consulted about what they wanted. One suspect some gov palms were greased.

Magnificent!

Its a bit of a pity that neither the Halifax or the Stirling get much attention, although the Stirling did see service as a glider tug. Somewhere we have a picture of my pop-in-law who was a para, in a group shot with part of an aircraft in the background, which may be a Stirling. I'll have to have a look for it, although my bro-in-law may have it.

One of my dads younger brothers served in the Fleet Air Arm as an artificer immediately after the war. He was on a carrier, but I'm not sure which one, but apparently, he worked on either the Fairy Barracuda or the Albacore.

I had read that 3 F-22s may have been damaged.  At any rate, let's home it's not too many.  We don't have enough to spare.

Tyndall is where F-22 training was conducted.  If the training sim was damaged or destroyed, that could be a big deal.

As a kid, we often took family holidays on the Isle of Wight, going by car ferry from Southampton to Cowes. On the way down the Solent, I well remember seeing these 2 huge unfinished seaplanes. I used to have a couple of B&W photo's of them, but they were in one of the albums that my mum kept and I don't know what happened to them after she passed away.

I never realized how capable an aircraft the Mirage 2000 was until I watched a completely insane French Air Force pilot "fly it like he stole it" at an air show. It could do everything the F-18 could do including a great tail walk in front of the crowd. Very impressive platform!

Yeah. The A-29 and AT-6 look like inbred cousins and quite fragile to boot. A real ground-attack airframe should sport two engines so if one gets shot up the other one can get the crew home,  just like the Bronco...

I did not go to the restoration hanger this time.  Actually, I don't think anyone is allowed in there, but there is a viewing platform to look down into the hanger.

When I was there a couple of years ago, the 229 was in the restoration hanger, but now it is out on the floor, and you can walk right up to it.  It hasn't been fully restored, so the only thing to see is the center section.  It didn't seem to get much interest, maybe because it's right outside the space hanger where Discovery is displayed, and that seems to draw a big crowd (as it should).  And without wings, it's pretty small and a little forlorn.  I don't think most people walking by understood what they were looking at.

Is that some sort of mock-up?  Or did AF1 miss Andrews AFB by 10 miles?

^After the pilots grew very proficient with launch and retrieval the landing gear was removed from some of the planes to lighten them and increase their range.

Not like it would have been helpful during an emergency water landing anyway...

These images are of T-38 USAF Test Pilot School aircraft flying faster than the speed of sound (767 mph). No they are not photoshopped. Using new NASA air to air schlieren photographic technology which shoots 1,400 frames per second, people are able to see how the airplanes create waves when air molecules begin to compress because they are flying faster than the speed of sound. These images were taken about 2,000 feet above the aircraft.

The FAA belongs to the Executive Branch of the gov't, so somewhere above the head of the FAA, you'll eventually get to the Prez. (I think it's part of the Dept of Transportation but too lazy to even Google it)

Anyone know anything about the next-gen Air Force bomber? Not sure if it's called 2037 Bomber or B-3, or maybe it's both?

All I can find are some Wiki articles. :(

Afaik, it's the only next-gen bomber the AF is currently planning. The plan is to retire the B-2s and B-1s as enough B-21s become operational. The B-52 is going to be re-engined and upgraded to keep it flying into the 2040s and possibly beyond.

Yeah, that's a great section. I also like how he mentions turning over the captured Sov sub crew over to the French intel guys who were in a "foul mood" after losing Foch.

Getting enough energy on target isn’t always the hard part of the challenge.  Rather, integrating a system that can detect, classify or ID (depending on ROEs), and track - and packaging the power, beam control,  and thermal management system into a small, operational, turn-key system - are the hard challenges.  Each of the things I listed are still challenging, but everyone focuses (heh) on power on target.  The Navy and Army have a reasonable chance of fielding an operational system in the next decade, but IMO the AF has a long way to go. I also get the impression that the AF is investing the least in high energy lasers, but I haven’t seen their budget numbers so I might be wrong.  When I worked JSF in the 90s and 00s, they touted putting a laser on the plane but I knew that wasn’t happening for a long time.

As far as the Air Force's MIC pals go, wouldn't successful airborne laser based systems seriously disrupt their very lucrative industry in developing&delivering the current and future crop of AtA and AtG smart weapons?

I don't know what "MIC" is.

A laser is not going to replace a-g weapons for a long time.  The energetics aren't close.  For a-a?  I assume in this case we're talking about fighter vs fighter, and not as a close-in defensive weapon against in inbound missile (which was what was tested in the SHIELD program).  Maybe, but now we're talking about longer propagation ranges.  That brings in another set of complications.  For a rough comparison, I'd say an ABL engaging a Scud is roughly (roughly) the same as engaging an aircraft in terms of range and target vulnerability.  ABL was housed in a 747, and the front half was beam control and fire control.  The back half of the 747 was a MW class laser (at least it was supposed to be - I don't know what power they eventually got).  Fiber lasers are currently in the 10s of kW now, so we're talking about scaling up two orders of magnitude.  I have no idea how much a MW fiber laser (including energy storage) would weigh compared to the COIL laser in ABL, but that would be a very interesting calculation.  And hopefully this illustrates that an a-a weapon isn't going to fit on a fighter.  HEL TVD's goal is 100-150 kW on an FMTV.

As far as disrupting the industry -- the companies building bombs and missiles are also for the most part the prime contractors for lasers.

Sorry to be a downer.  I first started working on high-energy lasers when I got out of grad school in 1987.  Reagan was still president, and I was working on the tail end of SDI.  Lasers were just around the corner then.   :)  Interestingly, for fun (?), I took a lunchtime engineering class offered by my company in an emerging field that was also just around the corner: hypersonics.

MIC= Eisenhower's military-industrial complex.

Thanks for the breakdown. I'd assumed that the laser tech firms were in rivalry with those that made smart munitions.

First thought was BAC Lightning but the fuselage shape doesn't look right, along with rounded windshield and those fins over the hard points. Also looks a bit small for a Lightning.

Very poor weather, rain and low cloud, marred the Sunderland Airshow, and for the first time in several years we didn't get to see stuff flying from Newcastle Airport to the show area on the coast. The only exception to that being the Hurricane from the BoB flight, which flew over quite low this morning.

A good portion of current US aircraft designs date back 40-plus years - F-15, F-16, F-18. The B-52 is very likely going to become the '100 year bomber'

Hell, the first flight of the F-117 was in '81. That design is 40 years old now.

Yes, it say a lot for the design of aircraft that keeps them effective for so long. The B52 is just legendary.

The C-17 had a requirement to land on an unimproved runway.  So sometime around 1994, I was at Bicycle Lake in Fort Irwin watching a C-17 land.  Bike Lake was similar to this video, and when the C-17 landed and put on its thrust reversers, it generated a dust and sand cloud that was so large the huge plane disappeared.  When I was certain it had come to a stop, I drove the rental car into the dense cloud looking for the darn plane.  I eventually found it, but in the process, the car wound up with a thick layer of dust on the inside.  Fortunately, Avis didn't charge me a cleaning fee.

Not to be a party pooper, but the visible image isn't anything special.  The specs on the N-G site for the latest Lightening pod show a "1K CCD" camera.  If I'm reading that right, it's likely a thousand pixels by a thousand pixels, which is 1 mega pixel and is what you could get in a digital camera in 2002.  5-10 years ago we used Sony block cameras with much higher resolution, and they only cost a few thousand dollars.  I presume they chose that format for the visible to match the IR, which they also say is 1K.  That would probably be a 1024 by 1024 focal plane array, which is sort of SOA for an operational system, and matching the visible camera with the IR camera is a reasonable decision.  When I left the lab 4 years ago, I was integrating a 2K by 2K focal plane array into my system, but I was getting the first FPA with this format.

I'm also a little suspicious of the image in the lower left.  I don't think it's an IR image for a couple of reasons, most notably the distinct shadow from the vehicle.  I think it's just a gray-scale version of the visible camera.  In their defense, they don't label that image as IR, but I bet most people viewing it think that it is IR.

Having said all of that -- I did get to see video from a Lightening pod about 15 years ago.  Not sure what generation it was, but it was pretty impressive.  When I was developing IR sensors for the Army, I was a bit jealous of the Air Force.  Often my biggest challenge was meeting the affordability goal, which an F-16 would probably burn in an hour of flight time.

For the second time since 2017 there has been photographic evidence of a classified version of the Hellfire missile that uses a hardened front end to enable the missile to punch through the roof of civilian vehicles. Immediately after that six sharp blades are deployed and spin round rapidly killing anyone inside. At least that’s the theory after viewing he photos of the vehicle interiors after these attacks. This unconventional “ninja” missile is unofficially called the AGM-114R9X

On the early carriers, there was a small outlet for auxiliary steam near the bow.  This let the planes taking off see an indicator of crosswinds, and the strength.

Yup. The first Macs started with 68000s and pretty much upgraded to 020, 030, and 040s just like the Amigas.  I recently acquired an LCII w/ 68030 (along with two 'classic' Macs) that I need to find time to set up and explore, never having used them much back in the day.

Interestingly, the 6502-based Apple II was so ubiquitous in schools that many wouldn't upgrade to the Mac until Apple developed an LC- compatible 'Apple II on a card' so the vast older software libraries which schools had accumulated would run on the newer Macs.

Maybe we should have a nerdy vintage computer/console thread to geek out in.

My friends and I play World of Tanks quite regularly on Xbone. I haven't spent a dime on it and have a good time. Am I uber powerful or even good at it... no. But with a bunch of friends, up to 5, you can form a platoon and play on the same side in matches. Helps the enjoyment quite a bit when you have backup.
I only play when my friends are on, but many of them play a lot more and so they are better and have more tanks. Only one or two have spent any money on the game.

The Bf-109s got nicknames- the D was Dora, the E was Emil, the F was Franz and the G was Gustav. Also, the 262 was the Schwalb, the Ju52 the Tante Ju, the Me410 the Horniss, the Ju87 the Stuka, the Me108 the Taifun, the Fw-190 the Wurger, etc, etc.

also, the Do-17 was the Flying Pencil.

I just had me a quick google and Erich Hartmann's 109G was nicknamed 'Lumpi' but I didn't run across any bomber nicknames. It could be that they just didn't paint the name on the plane in an easy-to-see area. I'd be surprised if it didn't happen at all though.

If you're looking to add a little flavor to an AAR of Amerika Bomber I'd say go ahead and name the plane anyway.

The only bomber with a nickname that comes to mind was a Gotta bomber in WWI.

Think in German this has a certain rhyme.

The only one I found is an illustration in Profile Publications No.40 for the Me 109E-7 Trop, which shows an aircraft from III/JG 77 in Greece, 1941, which, apart from the unit badge, has a cartoon style pigs head under the cockpit. There is no text attached to this, and no explanation in the book.

Unit artwork was not uncommon in the Luftwaffe, often started by the unit commander and later added to other planes in the squadron. Per wikipedia, some examples would include Adolph Galland's Micky Mouse and Erich Hartmann's Tulip (which was used until recently by A Luftwaffe squadron until they transitioned over to Eurofighters)

I'd forgotten about Adolf Galland's Mickey Mouse insignia. I'd thought that was just his 'signature' icon, sort of like a graffiti tag.

Good read about the hard use of the B-1 fleet

Quote
“In my own opinion after seeing in excess of 20 years of B-1 operations, we’ve accomplished more than the aircraft was really ever intended for, even if it wasn’t used in the originally conceived methods. The B-1 has been maligned, underfunded, and often placed under the charge of those who managed it poorly and didn’t represent it well when it came to sustainment and actual preventative measures for fleet health."

"The aircraft has largely overflown its original estimated service life and as B-1 operations will eventually dwindle into the twilight, many people will never know the amount of effort poured into keeping it flying despite the conditions, which forced it’s handlers to keep moving the goalposts. We were promised better systems through upgrades only to have them fail and no spares available. Procurement and sustainment contracts for critical components often took years only to have those parts not fit or fail sometimes out of the box."

Absolutely. I did engineering drawing once, and that was obviously in pre CAD-CAM days. I really used to enjoy the technical drawing aspect and still had some of the equipment until a few years ago.

I recall reading something about German fighters on the Eastern Front, where the German aces would paint their aircraft. It got to a point where the Russians would purposefully go out of their way to avoid the German aces, so the Germans would put their newbies into those aircraft so they could get some solid experience, and the aces would go into unmarked aircraft. The Russians were always in for a rude surprise when they went after the unmarked aircraft.

I thought it was a shame that they only built 183 of them.

If you have not seen it I'd recommend giving it a look. Some great shots of flying along the Orinoco River and a requisite 70's downbeat ending.

Yeah! Makes you appreciate how hard it was to get all those B-25s onto the smaller USS Hornet and still have room to launch them.

Good point - how the heck did they do that, and land them on again.

The B-25s never had to land on the carrier. They either crashed or landed on mainland Asia.

Ah, right - I didn't know that.

Yes, they were supposed to launch much closer to Japan and have plenty of fuel to make it to unoccupied China but the task force spotted a suspected Japanese picket boat and couldn't risk being reported so the decision was made to go early, right at the 'estimated extreme range' on the Mitchells (which had almost anything removable done away with to save weight and add extra tanks). The hope was that the 'estimate' would turn out to be on the conservative side. For some planes it was... for others, not so much.

I don't think there was ever a plan for the bombers to return to Hornet. I doubt carrier landings were even feasible for B-25s. They weren't entirely sure about takeoffs working, especially for the first bombers on the shortened flight deck.

It was always supposed to be a one way trip. It wasn't feasible to get close enough to Japan to make it the half-way point and China was just a little further on so a better option. Had they been able to launch at the half way point then I'd guess that the planes would return to land on deck one at a time and then be quickly pitched overboard to clear the deck for the next one.

IIRC, there was an early option to have the Mitchells turn south after striking Tokyo so the crews could bail out near waiting subs but this was shelved as too risky to the subs to stay in a fixed area within Japanese controlled water that long. Also, the risk of interception by the Imperial Japanese fighters would be much greater since the Mitchells would be flying close to the Home islands much longer.

When, Jimmy Doolittle bailed out of his plane, it was pitch dark.  He could not see where he was, or where his crew had come down.
In his account, he was at first happy to land in a liquid, but then realised he had landed in a manure pit.
One foot was on a solid bit, but feeling about, he could not locate another sturdy spot.
Rather than take a chance of toppli g into the muck and drowning, he spent the rest of the night as motionless as he could.
The next morning, two of his crew spotted him and pulled him out.
Asking him if he was alright, Jimmy Doolittle quietly said, "I'm shit faced."

The 4th of July flyover just flew over, perhaps within a mile of our house.  There was a good assortment of our airborne arsenal.  My wife asked me what the "batman" plane was, so I told her it was a B-2.

I sure do love the sound of jets.

I watched that on TV. It was great to see all those planes and quite a grand show even if the TV cameras kept screwing up their shots. I was hoping the Blue Angels would do one of their howling, tree-top level fly-overs full speed right over Trump and Melania. I bet Trump's hair still wouldn't move.  :hehe:

That's Reagan's hair you're thinking of. Not one hair on that man's head ever moved, not even when he stepped out of Marine One's still-rotating blades.

There's an episode of the original Hawaii 5.0 where McGarrett (Jack Lord) walk by a jet airliner spooling up it's engines. His perfect hair gets blown all over the place and then settles back EXACTLY as it was, every strand in place.
