Bought an unpunched copy of Light Division for $25.

I eyed this title MANY times back in the old game store I used to frequent in the late 80s. Kept wanting to buy it, but never did. Saw it for cheap on Amazon while I was about to get Ukraine '43, but I figured this would be easier to get into. I already have Holland '44 with me and haven't had time to mess with it yet, so I should probably wait on U'43.

Wrapped up -- two weeks late -- my 206th Anniversary Bordino replays (C&C:N).

Now having hard at Shako's 1806 for an ACD review.

I've been really impressed by the stuff from Hexasim.

Still punching and clipping. It looks like the system is pretty similar to ATO's Lilliburlero (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/64142/lilliburlero-battle-boyne-july-1690), which I love. The maps look really nice. Hoping to get a crack at it today.

Yeah and it still is at the top of my list. Meanwhile, this came too.

While U'43 is at the top, I gotta think in terms of my current living situation. I can't exactly drag out a huge-map hex-and-counter wargame and do it in one sitting. :(

You've been wanting it? Me too, for a while now, but it was always stupidly priced.

I think GMT is selling it for $35 right now (https://www.gmtgames.com/p-236-blackbeard-the-golden-age-of-piracy-2nd-printing.aspx), which isn't bad at all.

Game whoreness is like a storm. You never know which way the winds will blow.

I'm graduating from ASLSK to full ASL.

Beyond Valor has 13.5 sheets of counters.  My forearms are going to be the size of Popeye's when I'm done clipping all those corners.

It's an interesting design that I've not yet had a chance to poke at.

I don't know about Mike's copy, but mine had one of the wilder odors I've ever had from a game...something in the counter-making process I imagine.

The layout is inspired by Simmons' two classics "Bonaparte at Marengo" and "Napoleon's Triumph" with irregularly-shaped spaces formed of "approaches" that are used to regulate movement and combat and allow for terrain.

As I say, I haven't had a chance to go at it and I'm interested to hear your thoughts, Mike.
Title: Re: Whats on Your Table?
Post by: bbmike on October 09, 2018, 10:39:50 AM
I think it is the counters that cause the odor. Don't Tread on Me was the same way.
The area "approaches" concept looks interesting.

I set it up, but we didn't end up playing it. We'll give it another try soon.

Like Hollandspiele, White Dog uses Blue Panther for print on demand. The inks haven't really cured when they ship the games so they tend to be pretty pungent.

Play from a little drinkers with a wargaming problem con I attended in Sydney a few weeks ago:

Crusader scenario from DAK2. This was a learning game for all of us, we kept it set up for the whole weekend and subbed in and out while playing other games:

Apparently, I was wrong about solo play in Panzer. The France 1940 Expansion (the one I just ordered) has a section for solitaire rules:

https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/2146864/out-box-glimpse-solo-rules

https://rockymountainnavy.wordpress.com/2019/01/28/solo-wargame-solitaire-rules-in-panzer-expansion-nr-4-france-1940-gmtgames-2018/

Problem is, you need the base game to play the expansion.

I don't disagree with that. The proliferation of card mechanics in war games is disappointing.

I finally finished painting up my mid-late war stuff for Tanks (still got all the desert stuff to do) so we decided to have a quick bash.  Soviets attacking a German bunker.

Soviet initial moves.

German initial moves

The StuG and the PzKw IV took on the SU-85 and lost.  They both brewed up on ammo explosion crits.

The SU-152 tried to stay hidden in hopes of being able to get close and rock the bunker with some HE but it wasn't to be.  It lost a track while crossing between cover and the Jadgpanther made short work of it after that.

The Jagdpanther was absolutely deadly in this game, knocking out 3 of the 5 Soviet units and taking only slight damage in return.

The IS-2 tried taking on the Jadgpanther and a Panther G at the same time.  It knocked the Panther out in a few hits but got hammered by the return fire and died early.

German victory with the Pagdpanther barely damaged and the bunker untouched.  StuG, Panther, and PzKw IV dead.  Soviets lost all 5 vehicles.  SU-85, SU-152, T-34-85 x 2, and IS-2.

No, but I need to be careful with the credit cards.

I'd put a lot on one back when I moved everyone in February. My credit rating dropped like a rock but should go back up now that I've almost paid it off. It dropped much further than I thought it would, compared to when they took the house off my credit report.

I'm paranoid about using the credit cards now. The P500s I've backed, I'm not worried about because I know they won't hit before I move into the new place.

I think I’m on the hook to teach a game to some kids tomorrow and I’m feeling like an area control game. So I’ll either be teaching them El Grande or Kemet. Or since they all have played some MtG, I’ll break out the cube and teach them how to draft and build decks from a seemingly random pool of cards.

That makes me want to did my cards out. Its been a while since I played.

Break them out, make some tea, and play some cards with the  missus. Try a few games of Winston draft. It’s a wonderful way to play.
https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/winston-draft-2005-03-25
The article is not the best description but it gives you the general idea. There are some good videos on YouTube demonstrating Winston drafting. The best part is as long as you have a small collection of generally equal numbers of cards for each color-you have all the card pool you’ll ever need.

Title: Re: Whats on Your Table?
Post by: Bison on April 20, 2019, 08:44:59 AM
I hope you give it a try. Despite the hate and the justified criticism of expense, MtG is a brilliant game. I played a four player game of commander last night with the kids and my wife. Good times. Typical results dog pile on dad until he’s knocked out of the game. My vampire deck was performing exquisitely until the board wipes and round after round of attrition took their toil.
Title: Re: Whats on Your Table?
Post by: bob48 on April 20, 2019, 10:02:00 AM
I think its a pity that the game gets such a lot of hate from some gamers. At its core, it really is a good game despite the fact that it can cost a lot if you go down the collectors road, but that applies for many other game systems as well.

I look at a lot of the, in some cases, very expensive board games out there, especially 'none wargame' ones (no names, no pack drill), the cost of which would by you more than enough cards for hours of play. Some of the deck builders pack actually represent good value, its only when you look at older editions that you see the price escalate, some time by quite an amount, and obviously targeted at collectors.

We have around 1000 cards, none of which are later than maybe the 8th edition, and going back to 'Portal' and early stuff. One of the great things about MtG is that the core rules have, as far as I'm aware, stayed pretty stable over the years, and all the cards we have in our modest collection are compatible, regardless of the edition to which they belong.
Title: Re: Whats on Your Table?
Post by: Bison on April 20, 2019, 10:25:22 AM
I would love to play with your collection. I really enjoy the art and mechanics of the older blocks. My cube is 720 common cards mostly from 2002 onward. Really inexpensive. And I’m constantly researching how to change it. If I decide to replace a card, the cost is most likely about 10 cents. My next big update I’m considering is replacing 40 of the multi-color cards with another 8 cards of each of the primary colors. Total cost will be maybe...maybe $5. So there are very cost effective means of playing the game. A bulk lot of a 1000 cards can be purchased for less than $20. The best cards in the game? No. A great cheap collection to play?  Yes. And a cube of a 1000 cards results in millions of variations of card combinations. Get bored with the same cards? A few dollars on a deck builders toolkit or another bulk lot and you have new variety.

The cost is really associated with collectors and players investing in older or format specific power cards. IMO the increasing use of net decking is driving up prices for specific cards in constructed formats like legacy, modern, and standard. It’s also starting to effect prices on Commander and pauper format “staples.” It’s unfortunate but as you said high cost exists in many gaming hobbies. Try buying an out of print ASL module. The expense is there too.

Anyway I could drone on about how to play MtG on the cheap or my favorite formats....

Bison, we actually started a with small 80 card set that was given away with a PC game - 'Majesty' I think it was. We liked it so much that we then brought what was the current started set - edition 5 If memory serves.

We periodically added a few booster packs and then a couple of 'Fat Packs', which used to include a magazine and was quite good value for money. We also picked up the boxed 'Battle Royale' set in a sale somewhere and that added a lot of stuff to what we already had. Not purchased anything for a while, although I keep looking at what comes out.

I need to get Mrs B playing again!

My tactic is to just put the cards on the table, brew a pot of coffee, and then announce I’ve setup the game as requested! Usually results in and eye roll and a “what the hell are you talking about?”...I feign amnesia...and then the game gets played.  It’s a technique and hasn’t resulted in too many head lumps or a divorce...yet.

The kids each picked a game (5-Minute Marvel & Gonuts for Donuts). The Starfinder Beginner box was on my list and just released. I grabbed Mille Bornes to play with the kids (it's a game I loved playing as a kid).

Thunder Alley is not at all the type of thing I normally buy,  but I've played it and it's pretty good. The shop had it for $25 new and that's a very good price. At least $10-15 below what you could find from even the discount outfits.

I got in a game of Mega Civilization yesterday at a local game store. There were 9 of us in total, playing on the Western half of the board with an advanced start. Normally you start with one guy on the map and that's it. In this case, everyone started with 5 cities, multiple units and a set of 4 technologies. I was the Minoans (Iberia, the Celts, Carthage, Rome, Egypt, Hellas, Assyria and the Hatti are the other 8 civs on the western board). I think they would be a bit more interesting to play from the very beginning, but I was absolutely hemmed in with the advanced start. I really enjoyed it, though. The trading is interesting, I like the use of the same tokens to represent both units and currency in your treasury. In all, it took about 7 hours to play.

After my SpaceCorp AAR, I put Hitler's Reich (another GMT game) on my table, but the rules were a PIA. I posted to FB about my issues and Mark, the designer of HItler's Reich, was very helpful in pointing me to some resources for figuring things out. Meanwhile I put another of Mark's creations, Rebel Raiders On The High Seas, on my table, but it's not set up so I might just jump back to Hitler's Reich.

I've also got DG's Khe Sahn '68 (a solo game) that I've been leafing through, and y'all got me wanting to do something on Big Trouble In Little China instead.

Hoping to play Heores of Land, Air & Sea again tonight. I love this game. It's equal parts Heroes of Might & Magic : The Board Game and simple yet fun 4X game. I like it so much that I've ordered both of the big box expansions. I may have a problem.  ;D

Sometime after I finally get to punch out the expansions...and then play them... ;D   Obviously, this ain't hitting the table this weekend, but Tsukuyumi : Full Moon Down is about to. It has a batshit crazy backstory, but it seems like an interesting Dudes on a Map game design.

Picket Duty, 2nd Edition.

After considering it, I'd decided that a game that's on rails isn't necessarily a bad thing. Arguments could certainly be made on either side of the game coin about how much meaningful decisions make up your chosen games. Some are more so than others. I initially reviewed Picket Duty (1st ed.) over at the other site and was less than pleased with the game. I've also derided Target For Today and B-29 (I'd started a B-29 AAR over at that same site and just couldn't continue it because it was boring the hell out of me).

That's a discussion for another thread, probably. But I'd thought narrative-generating games are good if you approach them expecting exactly that. If you approach a game like this thinking you're going to make a lot of choices and not roll on a ton of tables, you're going to be as disappointed as I was.

I took the plunge and ordered SHAEF from PSC as it was on sale again.  I also added in a copy of Tenkatoitsu so I could get above the $100 free shipping threshold because I'm a financial genius!  Spend and extra $60 to save $8 in shipping.  If anyone needs and investment advice, just ask.

I was supposed to play Holland '44 today but got stood up!  Stood up by a nerd, oh the humanity!

Oh well, it was to be my first time playing so I decided to solo a few turns as I'm not that comfortable with the rules having only played Normandy '44 a few times and never this one or Ardennes.

Landings on all 3 drops zones went off with barely a hitch (one scattered unit amongst the 101st.  Why can't I ever roll like this against a human opponent?)

XXX Corps blasted through the German lines with the help of air and artillery but quickly got jammed up on the road. (Germans got all their traffic jam makers out)

The Red Devils pushed for the bridge in Arnhem and set up a perimeter around their drop zones.  Got into some rough fights with the SS and took casualties.  The Germans blew the rail bridge and Frost stopped just short of the north end of Arnhem bridge.

The 82nd tried to rush the bridge at Nijmegen but were stopped short by Kampfgruppe Henkle.  THey were able to take the Grave bridge intact but took heavy casualties securing the town.  The Germans blew 3 bridges along the Maas-Waal Canal but the 82nd managed to find one still intact.  Lots of Germans from the 406th came pouring out of the Reichswald forest to rush Groosebeek heights and the landing zones there.  Doesn't look like the 82nd has enough there to stop an overrun.

Eindhoven looks like the biggest headache.  The 101st are spread all over the map with strong German forces coming in from the west.   Took the bridge at Son.  Just have to hold it and clear the city of Einhoven until XXX Corps show up.

Tell me about it.  I've got about 40 ships left to paint for Cruel Seas, 25 or so desert front tanks for Tanks!/Flames of War, and a whole lot of minis for Descent and AvP.  Never seem to ever make progress as I'm always buying more stuff.  (and now I really want to buy the samurai armies from Warlord games for Pike & Shotte but use them for a minis based version of Tenkatoitsu.)

I was going to start a learning play through of Empire of the Sun last night but my current gaming table is too small for the map. I’m relegated to a small 36”X36” card table at the moment. The map is around 38” so it hung over the edges of the table with no room for the player aid cards. I need to get a slightly larger table and just pull out the card table as a side table when necessary for some extra space for things like player aid cards or counter trays.

Yes it was.She was really trying hard not to kill the party but after I spectacularly failed my death saves -the outcome was clear  Sadly the adventure was a premade one from the DM Guild label as a 1st level adventure. The final boss was a necromancer with 78 hit points (12d8 HIt Dice) and access to level three spells. Basically a 9 to 10 level magic user.

I knew something wicked this way comes when the very first encounter was 6 skeletons and 3 zombies...😳

I’ve painted several minis over the last couple of days. A handful of Kobolds for the new campaign. A gnome sorcerer for the daughter to use but I practiced a new technique to paint white. White is a pain in the ass to paint with decent shading. A vampire and finished some older minis that had been sitting around needing a few final details touched up.

The plan is to break out the air brush and black prime a couple of 15mm armies for DBA. Most likely the Roman and Carthaginians to do some Punic War battles.

It’ll be interesting painting 15mm less detail but going for a good 3’ look. A new process for me. Plus painting some elephant and horse units will be an interesting challenge.

Yeah, don't get carried away with too much detail on the 15s. Even if someone picks up a stand and gives it a close look, most of us don't see so good anymore.
Title: Re: Whats on Your Table?

If I don’t wear my reading glasses, the level of detail decreases dramatically. At that point it’s just colors and shapes!😬

Unfortunately, my eye's don't let me paint anymore, unless its a door.but, I always found that 15mm (and, back in the day, I painted a LOT of 15mm figures) that its the best scale that you can add enough detail to make 'em look good, but you don't have to put in as much work as you do for something like 28mm figs. OK, I know that sounds obvious..........I also painted a mass of WH40K stuff, and whilst you can be a bit skimpy with the rank-and-file, you tend to put a lot of work into the 'personality' figures. I think that 15mm is a good balance scale-wise, and its easy to fit on reasonable size tables and generally looks good without too much hard work.

The last stuff I painted in 15mm was an ACW Union Division - 3 Brigades each of 4 regiments, plus some arty, a couple of cav regiments, supply wagons and a Reb brigade to supplement my buddies Confederate army. The figs were from a mixtures of manufactures to add plenty of variety, but a large proportion were by Old Glory, a company that are based not far from where I live.
Title: Re: Whats on Your Table?
Post by: Bison on July 03, 2019, 04:06:37 PM
The gnome I just painted was essentially 15mm. Sure it had details...sort of but at that scale you need a single hair brush an optometrist tools to see and paint them.

Finger nails! Bob your the man. I don’t think I have the patience for that sort of detail. I slap some skinnish color on the hands do a bit of shading and highlighting.  I’m trying to worry less about details and more about cranking out the quantity of decent table ready minis.
Title: Re: Whats on Your Table?
Post by: bob48 on July 03, 2019, 04:33:12 PM
I honestly used to put in much more detail than I needed to, the reason being that I found that I enjoyed the painting as much as I enjoyed the gaming, and being able to produce some well detailed figures gave me a lot of satisfaction.

Eventually, I had to sell all my 40K stuff, and the collector who brought the whole lot said that he classed some of the figures as being painted to 'Professional. standard, which really gave my ego a boost. I actually miss being able to paint, as it really is relaxing and quite therapeutic. I really like using acrylic paints and inks and got some good results once you master the techniques.

Then you look at the stuff in White Dwarf mag and realise just how poor your painting is compared to real professionals!
Title: Re: Whats on Your Table?
Post by: Bison on July 03, 2019, 04:35:44 PM
I love the painting part of it too. Some figures get loved more with detail than others. Ultimately I have a pile of metal and plastic and rules that are useless without the minis. So that drives my decisions a lot too about details and where I focus.
Title: Re: Whats on Your Table?
Post by: bob48 on July 03, 2019, 04:42:01 PM
We had a firm rule in the little group of buddies i played with, that you were not allowed to play with figures that were unpainted. I was going to add that we still have a rule that we cannot play with un-clipped counters, but for one thing it would just upset Vance, and for another thing it wouldn't be true :-)

I envy those who enjoy painting. I never could enjoy it. I'm too much of a perfectionist to not paint things to a level beyond what the game needs, and too impatient to paint an entire army that way. I always felt like the painting was getting between me and the game.

That drove me to 2mm...which I've proceeded to over paint and therefore never finish...

I'm finally getting over the perfectionist hurdle.  Still working on my Cruel Seas stuff but I've gotten to the point where I'll just slap paint on, do a bit of shading and weathering and call it good enough for the table.

Most people are Mirth. They don’t care. They just want to play with toys.

I care though.  It's odd.  I think because I spend most of my time looking at the models up close through magnifying glasses that I worry over minor mistakes.  I also tend to use very muted colour palettes and shades that are subtle.  When the models are out on the table and viewed from 2 feet away, they just look like a uniform blob.

I care too but it can also cause stress. What really need to buy is the Vallejo Model color case. I use the Game color line which is great but I think too bright for historical minis.

Toss up for family game night. Either a four player game of MtG Commander or roll up new characters for D&D. Although I think a game of Kemet might be fun too.

We should have played Agricola. We just finished...mostly..a four player commander game. We had to call it at 1030 because I need to get up for work. I think it would have taken another 45 minutes to finish. A great format and lots of fun but it can take awhile to play a game.

Yes, you do!  Especially since the SKs frequently sell out.

I've clipped the counters and now I'm organizing them.  I've read through the rules and got a feel for the major new additions, which are concealment, banzai charges, and what happens to Japanese troops when they fail an MC (they don't break, they ELR reduce).  I've heard that with the jungle, there aren't many good LOSs, resulting in more CC.  No T-34s shooting at Panthers with APCR from 15 hexes away.  Looks like fun.  My local club's game day is next weekend and I will try to get a game going.

Probably will be spending all weekend getting the house in order. Boxes and crap everywhere, where it doesn't belong. Got to move the rest of my stuff out of the father-in-law's house, too.

Though I did just order Star Wars: Outer Rim. Because I have a disease. I console myself by the fact that it only cost me $16 thanks to credits from surveys and such, and the fact that I also will be going over to the storage unit this weekend to sort through what's over there and decide what to keep, what to give away (review copies), and what to sell (for firesale prices). Some of these I just can't part with, like my TOI collection and my older stuff (RIchtoven's War, Carrier, Tokyo Express, etc.). But we shall see.

Title: Re: Whats on Your Table?
Post by: BanzaiCat on August 22, 2019, 11:32:57 AM
Outer Rim is pretty awesome, bbmike. Especially with solo play. It's got a lot of pieces to it so it's a bit fiddly when it comes to organization, but otherwise it's a terrific game. I played Lando Calrissian against an AI-controlled Han Solo. Big mistake! Han has movement bonuses and it was damned hard to keep up with him. The AI beat me, 10 to 5 (first one to 10 Fame wins). I gotta try it again soon with a different AI opponent.

Right now, I have an Amazon box on my desk at home, with my new graphics card (an XFX Radeon RX 570) and a copy of Roll Player, which I've wanted for a while (well, the graphics card too!). With rehearsals though I've had not even ten minutes' of time to myself at home so I've not had a chance to crack open my desktop case and load this bad boy in there. I probably won't have a chance until Friday to finally test it out. First world problems, I know. I'm just anxious at having invested a bit of cash in this thing which I rarely do (at least, not that much).

Roll Player, I really want to give it a try this weekend. Outer Rim too.

I've actually got a game on National Park on my table.  My daughters gave it to me so that we can play it when we spend the weekend in a cabin this Fall, so I'm getting familiar with it now.

This game arrived earlier this week.  An impulse buy.  Kernstown is one civil war battle I don't know much about, even though the battlefield is about an hour away from my home.  I think the bike shop (now closed) where I bought one of my bikes is right next to the battlefield, and one of the guys who used to hang out in the shop was a re-enactor.  After I play the game I'll walk the battlefield, although I think that development was encroaching.

Right on all counts.  Pax Pamir 2 is beyond argument the best produced game I've encountered this year, and, in fact, many a year.  Still working to get my head around its subtleties, though.

His "John Company" is really, really good too.  Made me want to wear periwig, don a long robe, and issue orders to the EIC.

Red Storm ...

[follow up] disappointing ... radar signature has zero impact? ... so what is the purpose of the F117 scenario?  ... no damage rating difference (F-16 = A-10 = B52) ...

a lot of time and dice-rolling for vanilla GAME with an air war theme ... and come now just HOW MUCH of a Viper homer can you be in a game design before the developer and BETA testers don't
call you out on it?
Add some advanced rules to handle those issues and right a radar detection / radar track AI into the VASSAL/BGA/TTS GAP and it gets back on my table ... until then ... probably not

Just got in Interceptor Ace.

Normally I make it a rule to never remove the shrink-wrap from my games so as to ensure their freshness for decades to come but this game cam with some extra counter stickers taped to the box and I knew they would get lost or ruined if I just left them there on the outside so I had to crack 'er open...

I received my copy last Thursday. The designer said on FB that they included double the stickers in case you mess any of them up. I did one on a blank counter but didn't like the look of it so I didn't bother with the others. I'm going to wait and see if game play demands their inclusion.

When you open the box there's an Errata sheet, which wasn't generating a lot of confidence (Nightfighter Ace had a few print issues though nothing game-breaking).

Overall though the game looks a lot better than Nightfighter Ace. That map of Europe, there's one like it in Nightfighter Ace but I never bothered with using it as it took up a lot of space to indicate only a few pieces of information, which were not all that difficult to keep track of without it. This one looks useful at least insofar as having spaces for the Combat Deck draw and discard piles.

Thanks to Fine Games (and let's be honest, that's mirth's fault), I have Hunt For Red October coming my way this Wednesday. I'm also looking to trade with a guy on BGG for Red Storm Rising, to make a mega-WW3 game of the two. The guy that owns RSR lives near me and is a game developer on top of that, too.

Mainly I'm looking to convert my daughter's boyfriend to wargaming. I've since gotten him BIG into board gaming, but the real test will be to see if he likes wargames, and either of these are light enough I think to be good entry-level games to play at Christmas.

I knew you'd do that

I also got Princess Ryan's Star Marines and Red God Of War, Operation Mars 1942

PRSM I know isn't the most highly-rated game but I've always wanted a copy of it, and RGOW was pretty cheap and covered an aspect of the Russian Front I don't know much about.

Yeah I'm justifying it however I can, lol. Though I am getting rid of quite a few games.

Well if Barth is buying my set of Tide of Iron, that's a heck of a stack there.

I'm also planning on giving my daughter's boyfriend several of my unopened/unplayed games. The kid, my daughter said, has bought fifteen games this semester while at college. What a good kid. He'll be a hoarder in no time.

And y'all just jealous.

Currently have Atlantic Storm: Admiral's Edition on my table, from Lock 'n Load.

It's basically a trick-taking card game with the Battle of the Atlantic as a wrapper.

I tried the solo game as the Germans earlier today, and the Allies wiped the floor with me. After they were up 30-0 in VPs after winning three hands in a row I gave up. I'm not convinced this was a fun time but want to put some more time into it.

My copy of Coral Sea, 2nd ed arrived this morning.  Missing one data sheet but not a biggie as I found a better version on the FB page.  (bad luck though.  My last two game purchases both had parts missing).

Read through the rules and it seems like it'll be a really fun game.  Reminds me of a board game version of WitP: AE.  The components are a bit on the chintzy side .  The manual is decent but could use more illustrated examples.  the charts and tables that come with the game are not so great.  Lots of pertinent info is missing from them.  Thankfully there are some great 3rd party ones available on the FB page and BGG.

We played a 4-player game of Star Trek Ascendancy today.  It was my first chance to try out the Andorians.  Unfortunately I ran into to bad luck in the early going and the systems near my homeworld were crap.  The Cardassians had some great luck with their start but then ran into a Borg transwarp conduit and decided to poke it.  Cube popped out and that tied them up for several turns as they desperately threw suicide attacks at it in order to slow it down enough for them to build up a fleet big enough to take it on.  They managed to destroy it in defence of their homeworld but then went and poked the conduit AGAIN!  Out popped a 2nd cube...

The Klingons tried to make a beeline for be but ran into several deadend systems which prevented us from linking up.  They instead headed off against the Federation and Cardassians.  Those two bought the Klingons off with favourable trade deals and the Klingons contented themselves with hanging back and building up their fleets.

The Federation also had bad luck with their systems early on and ran into a bunch of dangerous phenomena.  They were able to exploit this and generate a ton of research studying them which they used to develop a lot of tech.

I was finally able to unlock some good systems and start to build my infrastructure and tech up. Never did get to use any of the Andorian’s spiffy abilities though.

Things finally came to a head and the Klingons attacked the Cardassians with some massive fleets....and got spanked pretty hard for it as killing two Borg cubes gave the Cardassians a bunch of tech which beefed up their weapons and shields.

Seeing as how the Cardies were weakened by the fighting, I launched my own attacks and drove pretty deep into their territory.  The Feds then allied with them and started threatening me so I had to pull back.  It looked like it’d be a 2vs2 fight with the Klingons and I teaming up  but then he backstabbed me for no reason other than to get one research token (he was on his 5th gin and sofa by this point...).  He also committed genocide and scorched one of my planets because “[he] just wanted to see how the tech worked”.   I was far ahead in weapons tech at this point so I destroyed his fleets as punishment but that left me open to a push by the Federation.  They tried a soft approach in hopes of wooing my systems away from me and over to their side but muffed the roll.

I had an open run at Earth next turn and Kronos after that but the Cardassians had amassed enough culture to ascend and become dominant and won the game.

Fun times.  Very swingy,  lots of hilariously poor decisions (some aided by gin) and a generally good time.

Correct, but really Federation & Empire is the true strategic game. Federation Space was a lighter version of F&E that didn't do as well. The rules were broken and never fixed.

Got to play this guy over the holiday break:

https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/255516/brave-little-belgium

After 3 plays, I do think it is a nice game in its own right. Nothing incredibly deep, but just enough guts there to be a very fun game. The play time is very short, truly less than an hour. Not intimidating for non-wargamers as I also played this with someone who primarily is into euros. Chit pull is one of my favorite mechanics so I do enjoy that as well.

Overall a nice game, will have to play a bit more before passing a final verdict but definitely worth the purchase if you are looking for playability.

I went to the Con in Cromwell, CT. Both years they've run it, they have done 50% off everything in stock. The warehouse is nearby so they keep bringing in games as needed.

The Con is a great event and the sale is a big incentive for me to keep going back. I plan for dropping between $150-$200 while I'm there.

Damnit. I used to live there a long time ago and it's still only about 3/4 hour away from me now. Do they hold it there every year?

It's been there both years they've held it. Afaik, they plan on being there again next year. The hotel isn't great, but the venue space works out well for them.

I'll put in for the time off soon.

I can catch a few hours there during the day on Friday. Is it bad form if I just hover near some of games in session rather than actually sign up to sit in on any? I find it hard enough to learn a game quietly on my own, never mind in front of a bunch of other people where my ADD can really shine.  ;D

I also blame Danger Mouse and the Zucker brothers to a large extent.

Depends on how far it has to migrate. The further it's migrated, the more it costs.

Depends on where you are. European swallows are probably more appealing to you to help the coconuts migrate as you'd get them faster than African swallows. For us in the States, it's the same whether it's European or African swallows.

We played a quick 2-player matchup of Sails of Glory this afternoon.  2 ships vs 2.  Americans vs. Brits on the Great Lakes during the War of 1812.  Probably the strangest game of Sails I've yet to play.  I played as the Royal Navy.  I split my force in two in the hopes of enveloping the lead Yank ship and pounding her into matchsticks with broadsides on both flanks.  It didn't pan out that way.  There were only 3 broadsides fired in the entire game and the rest devolved into close range musketry and boarding actions.

Yankee ships.  Almost zero hull damage yet both crews are gone.

The Brits aren't in much better shape.  The Leopard struck after losing the last of her crew but the Polyphemus won the day.

We celebrated the fact that our betters have decreed that we may be let out in small packs as long as we remain appropriately muzzled by playing TANKS: Modern.  My buddy finally finished painting up his Yanks, Rooskies, and East Germanz so we had a straight up tank on tank bash.  5 Russian T-64s, 3 East German T-72s and 2 East German T-62s vs 5 'Murican M1 Abrams and 2 M60s.  I played the Russians.  Pretty good bash.  I used zero finesse and just bum rushed the 3 M1s that were facing my platoon.  They popped 4 of my 5 tanks but Communist ardour prevailed and I knocked all three Abrams out.  The M60s did a number on the East German T-72s on the other side of the map but the lowly T-62s punched above their weight and took down 1 Abrams and M60.  The remaining two Yankees mentioned something about the better part of valour and scarpered.

Good times

I had some friends over for a 4-player session of Core Space.  Each player had a team of 3 crew as well as an elite cop.  The scenario took place on Titan Station.  The cops got wind that illegal bio-weapons experiments were taking place there and that a criminal gang had taken over de-facto control.  The Purge (the evil Borg/Cylon style machine intelligence species) was attacking the station in order to secure the weapon.  Orders were to set the station's reactor to go critical.  Extra money if you could break into the crime leader's stache and loot it and even more money if you could secure a sample of the bio-weapon for the black market (of course you'd have to arrange an accident for your cop liaison).

The game started off well with all 4 players staying out of each other's way instead of backstabbing one another.  Most of the gangsters went down in the first two firefights (and the event card had the 2nd in command of the gang try to murder the leader in order to take over for herself so that sorted out the gang problem).  Then the Purge showed up and bodies started to pile up.  One of the guys royally screwed over another player by welding all the doors shut and trapping his entire crew inside a room with a bunch of murder-bots).   I was able to make it to the reactor but had trouble getting it to go critical (flubbed a lot of rolls).  Finally managed it but then the Purge cut into the station's hull right behind me and started pouring into the corridor and I  got eviscerated.

Two of the players turned on each other and shot each other up to the point where neither was going to make it off the station before it blew so the one guy who never managed to secure any loot nor complete any objectives "won" by being the only one to make it back to his ship before everything went kaboom!

 Good times!

I'm finding it hard to get into this. It's been on the table since last weekend and I haven't touched it.

Trouble is, the mission seems like it's going to be pretty boring. It's 12 truns and yet I can't see how you'd run 12 turns out of it. I've got to get from the right hand side to the left. I've got 5 movement points, 9 if I use double time, I have to get past a considerable NVA unit...the NVA officer can activate all surrounding squads.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50065743172_9d6eb18a45_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2jh92bu) (https://flic.kr/p/2jh92bu)

It's just a starting scenario - I can skip it...I don't really want to though. But I wish their intro mission was a bit more inspiring. A bigger map to give some scope with additional forces.
Title: Re: Whats on Your Table?
Post by: bbmike on July 01, 2020, 11:43:16 AM
I could be missing something but it doesn't look boring to me. Looks like those guys are in for a hell of fight if they are to make it all the way across the map with those enemy forces moving in.
Title: Re: Whats on Your Table?
Post by: judgedredd on July 01, 2020, 05:46:18 PM
It just seems once sided and not "a battle". I'm not going to be able to avoid the NVA - that's fine. I want a fight. But I've got 2 US units and a leader against 6 NVA units, a leader and an MG unit.

Kind of seems like it'll be over in turn one or two.

Having said that, the game mechanics could make casualties light.

I'll play it through and report back.

Spent about seven hours playing ASL on VASL today.  I blew off my evening run because I wanted to finish the game.  It was a pretty simple scenario, but a bit on the long side.  Russians vs Germans in Finland.  My opponent had hot dice with the attacks, but I was rolling low to survive the morale checks.  I barely squeaked out a win for the Russians.

How about a combo of American Megafauna, Agricola, and ASL Starter Kit#3?

You can defend your crops from rampaging mastodons with your Panzer II.

4th of July just wouldn't feel right if I hadn't watched Gettysburg for the 5000th time.  Freshly pumped up, I decided to setup and have another go at Last Chance for Victory.  I ran a game of this over quarantine that got deep into the 2nd day before I called it.  That was my first game of it though and I was playing particularly slow, lots of rulebook browsing. Since then I've played the entire 2nd day's scenario, and also Early's Washington campaign of the same LoB series and got through both in just a couple days. So, I'm hopeful that this won't have to consume table space for longer than a week or two.

My first play of this was loosely 'historical'. What I'm really itching to do this time is swing Ewell's Corps back around behind the town on either the night of the 1st, or morning of the 2nd (have to see how the commands/orders go), and form him on Hill's right flank where you would normally see 1st Corps lined up at.  Then, see how an attack on the Union left looks with some depth behind it. Last game Ewell took an absolute beating while trying to drive 11th Corps from their position north of the town, so I'll need him to do better this time if he's going to be of significant help on the 2nd day.

I've figured out why this scenario seemed boring. I couldn't put my finger on it - but there's a few things...

Just thought I'd list the things as I played the first scenario (which actually turned out to be fun - I ended up backtracking and using the paths to try and circumvent the NVA I encountered - after a quick couple of assaults with limited results - which seemed pretty realistic.

I realise 3 of the 4 things listed above are personal preferences and come from my experience of other games I've played.

Compass does a live video every week and the one they did yesterday stated they go with U.S.-based producers, which is why their prices are higher. Wish I could remember more of that, but I've had a few jello shots tonight.

Compass' pricing is okay. To me, the disparity comes with the overall quality of game components at the price level. Compass is behind GMT quality-wise imho.

Pricing hurts!  I've got Stellar Horizons coming next Monday or Tuesday.  It's the most expensive board game I've bought by a fair margin (miniatures based games are another matter....as are the evil FFG games with a million and one expansions.)

FFG's model/pricing is ridiculous. The MSRPs for Compass are on the higher side. I've bought several games at their convention when everything in stock is 50% off. I can handle that discount.

Thanks Brant.

tent - in a  nutshell,  it's expensive but an absolute gem. It's not just totally solitaire but superbly solitaire too. The solitaire game mechanics are the best I've come across - though I am no prolific boardgamer (with maybe only 20 titles to my name). The components are superb though I would've loved a mounted map.

I will say £135 for a boardgame was the most ridiculous thing I'd ever heard of. But given what I was looking for (a solitaire, tactical game with single man counters), it hit the nail on the head.

I was very, very wary about spending that amount of money on a board game but I had absolutely no regrets at all. And I'm super happy to get back to it.

Price to content is a question every board gamer has to answer - and I was dubious - but totally won over with this one.

If you've got any specific questions about it, I'd be more than happy to try and answer them for you. This game needs promoting - if not only just to try and put people's minds at ease that for £135 they're getting a good product.

A few questions:
To your knowledge how well has Compass dealt with the Errata, player aid errors, rules questions etc?
How much replayability is in the game?
Does it have any kind of "campaign" system where you follow your men from engagement to engagement?
Title: Re: Whats on Your Table?

The game was exactly what I was looking for. A modern, single man counter, solitaire, small squad game. I put off because of the price but the more I looked around and realised this was likely my only option for that game I was looking for, I gave up and parted with the money.

Rules and Errata
As far as I know there's "living" rules on the Compass website (last I looked anyway). Errata seemed up to date and the designer was present and very active on BGG. I had no problem finding answers to my questions or if there wasn't one there, a reply was quick.

I haven't been back to BGG to check on these rules - but I was going through the rule book yesterday just to refresh my memory and I was very surprised at how everything came flooding back. I think I was ready to play in an hour - and I hadn't been at the game in several months and I've absorbed several other game systems in that time.

Replayability
It seems to be superb to me. The order card pull system, the initiative system, the dummy counters, the WIA card system all looks like it would provide plenty variation even if you played the same scenario over and over.

Campaign System
No. Currently there isn't. I haven't even thought about whether I could implement such a thing.

Poised and ready.

Attack the Farmhouse
Orders are out 1 team from Able, 1 team from Baker and 2 teams from Charlie - 12 troops in all - are to oust the Germans from their Farmhouse over the course of 12 turns.

It's pretty well defended with up to 26 German soldiers dug in.

I say up to 26 German soldiers because of course when selecting the German soldiers, they are drawn from a cup - and that cup contains 5 dummy counters for each German Team (of which there are 4 - White, Blue, Red and Yellow) - so there are 20 dummy counters in the cup along with 35 actual German soldiers.

It's a cracking variable system. I could effectively have 26 soldiers or 6 soldiers and 20 dummy counters.

My copy of Stellar Horizons arrived yesterday.  I set it up to try to learn the rules in prep for a scheduled 3-player game this weekend.  This thing eats up a lot of table space!  Looks like it could be interesting.  I've played a number of Compass Games before but never owned one.  I'm finding the way they've organized the rule-book to be less than optimal.  The general rules seem to be pretty straightforward but there are quite a number of little modifiers and exceptions for just about every rule and they are spread out all over the place with many just being mentioned almost in passing in the middle of a paragraph.  The lack of an index doesn't help.

Campaign game starting layout.

Tech tree.  The North Americans have quite a head-start with the Russians close behind.  The Chinese have a few starting techs and everyone else starts at zero.

I have a solo ASL game set up on my table.  It's set in the early part of Stalingrad.  Lots of units, including flamethrowers, demolition charges, and AFVs crammed into a small map with urban terrain.  Russians get one sniper check per turn, and Germans get a Stuka attack.  Provides a real sense of the Russians having their back against the Volga.

Played Imperial Struggle today.  Lost as England but that's because France cheated!  (and we didn't catch the mistake until turn 3 and it was too late to reset.)

Did some Time of Crisis and decided to try Nemo's War again, published by VPG. This is a very thematic and fun solo game where you step into the shoes of Captain Nemo and command the submarine Nautilus, straight from the pages of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. You get to decide before the game begins, however, how you want to play things; if you want to be a warmonger, you can choose that path. Science? Exploration? Whatever you choose defines the victory conditions, and also how hard the imperial powers come after you. It's been a while so I'm looking forward to re-learning the game.

It's also kind of sad that the high point of my weekend was finding these awesome plastic condiment cups at Dollar Tree and buying several as they'd make excellent component piece storage during games, or draw cups. Also, getting a sheet of felt at the store to silence my loud a$$ dice tower.

I picked up the Forever War 2015-? expansion  for Labyrinth a few weeks ago and finally had a chance to play it with a friend a few days ago.  It's an OK expansion.  It doesn't really add anything new rules wise to the game but it does require that you have The Awakening expansion as well as the base game in order to play it.  I feel that the event cards in this newest expansion  are a little lacklustre and too generic when compared to those in the base game and first expansion.  We both enjoyed the Trump Tweets cards that had you roll a random tweet and outcome but they were the only real standouts.  We both felt the COIN card was pretty tacky in that it was basically an ad for the GMT COIN games.  We also felt that the game seemed a little bit biased against 45 but that's always going to be a problem with setting a game with a heavy political theme in current day.

We just played the standard scenario but the alternate history version that has Hillary winning the 2016 election looks like it might be interesting.  So-so expansion.  Definitely not as good as Awakening.  I'd wait for a sale before picking it up.

A couple of epic games of one of the most horribly balanced and yet fun games of luck with the kids.... Dungeon!

The game could be so much better if wizards would spend three hours of development time rebalancing the classes, giving the cleric some sort of cleric power...same with the thief. As the perpetual player of the thief (damned you color green!), I’d love to experience a level lower than a nerve racking panic exploration of a couple of level three rooms. Despite its glaring flaws...I still love the game all these years later.

I paid $10 or so. We played it 5 or 6 times already in the past few weeks. My boys would play every night if they had their way.

I’m breaking out Talisman to play with the older kids this week. There’s something oddly refreshing about playing simple luck based roll and move type games. Probably the lack of deep thinking that appeals to me.

Sheesh...this hasn't been updated in a while.

I was half way through the rules for Fields or Fire 2 and I decided I wanted to play something familiar. I remembered this game - RAF:The Battle of Britain 1940 by Decision Games.

Why this one? The rules were super easy to follow and understand. I can't remember any time I was left in two minds as to what I should be doing. There's a Sequence of Play ( complete one) in the manual and each sequence has a number for the section in the manual it refers to - and everything you need regarding that particular sequence is there - exactly where it should be.

Last time I played this I played the one day training scenario. This time, I'm going for the full Eagle (German) campaign. It says 14 hours in the manual. I'm thinking it might be on my table for a bit longer than that.

Come on RAF - show me what you've got.
