The only reference I have found so far says that the 2nd crewman was a 'radio operator', but it seems more likely that he operated the radar.

It might have been a dual role. In the book The Other Battle, it's all about the Funker and Pilot.

We've not yet gotten to a point where a rear gunner is needed, though I think that kicks in whenever you're dealing with Mosquitoes.

I found a picture of the inside of a cockpit (admittedly its a model) and it definitely shows the rear crewman has a radar with its distinctive viewing hood. This may not have applied to all versions, obviously, but certainly those with the nose mounted radar array, such as the Liechtenstein.

Yeah, the N-1 cockpit is a little odd. I've seen a few images of one layout and then another entirely different layout. What's odd is the pilot seat is on the left side, but right next to him is another crewman, facing forward. In game the pilot fires the weapons but maybe this other crewman did that, in real life? The rear radar operator must have doubled as a rear gunner. It's an odd set of responsibilities - the guy in the back has a lot to worry about but that right-seater at the front, not so much.

That's just my ignorance of the subject. I haven't taken the leap yet to buying books on these particular aircraft to see for sure, but that'll come eventually I think.

Yep! I'm very interested in the Ta-154.

Yep! I'm very interested in the Ta-154.

Just make sure you get one with the first gen plywood glue. After the original glue plant was bombed into oblivion Moskito production switched to a much crappier kind and some of the Ta-154s literally delaminated mid-flight. A Very Bad Thing for those aircrews...

I can't remember if its included in the game, but having the Me 262 night fighter variant would be interesting.

There were Do-335 night fighter variants as well.

The 262 is not, unfortunately, in the game. Though I wouldn't put it past the BGG fans to create one.

Yep, just looked, and sure enough there's a few of them there.

Woot! All you have to do is survive until it becomes available :-)

BC, can you start a campaign at different points in the war?

I believe you can, yes. You can choose one of the Ace pilots included in the game and start with different aircraft or at later points in the campaign - sort of gives you a head start, using an Ace, but it also reduces the time in the game that you have.

Also, just from looking at this card - it says "Available 3/45" which is outside the scope of the normal game. I believe there's some fan-made work there on BGG that lets you continue the war so that obviously would be necessary to play that one.
