It's just a way for the stores to make a buck or two. If it's just during one-shot games or something, send like it shouldn't be a big deal.

But in long-term campaigns? Nah

Random acts of genius and other inspirations of applied violence.

It’s just as bad in this one because your characters have probably just reach the point of leveling up to level two or maybe three and bam reroll pal! Meanwhile the table is mocking your demise as they get ready level up.

Sounds like you and your group would enjoy Paranoia more than fantasy adventure. Hell, I think Paranoia actually had a D&D-like campaign game/sourcebook, too.

My group consists of my wife and kids. Last campaign ended in a party wipe. My poor cleric never even had a chance to learn a first level spell.

Basic fantasy cleric don’t get a first level spell until second level. Old school rules are rough in low level magic based classes.
