Yeah the basic rules are a great entry to the game. But it's really just die rolling and collecting gold to build. I imaging it gets samey quickly. There does seem to be a whole lot more with the advanced game - so I'm looking forward to getting bored and moving to the advanced game.

OK - in reply to you question on BGG. despite what I said, even in the basic game, there are some quite interesting subtleties.

In this mission, 'Fight to the Death' there are several ways of getting a victory.

As you know, the Shashka Kingdoms do not earn revenue by occupying a settlement, and if they do control one, then they have to pay 1g per turn to 'maintain' it.
So, when you do take control of a settlement, you can loot it (rule '4.8') for 3g, and at a later stage you can Lay Waste (rule 12.2.2) to it for more gold.

So its a balance between keeping enough gold to buy troops and pay for any settlements that you do keep in order to win. However, note that if you do not have sufficient gold to pay for all your controlled settlements, then your kingdom collapses and thus you lose.

Now it easy to miss, but read the last line of the victory conditions; 'If both player control the same number of Settlements, the Orc player wins. The implication here being that this applies even if neither side controls ANY settlements - its the same number - zero!

Therefore, the Goblins really need to have a least 1 controlled settlement, which means that they need to keep the Orcs from having control of any settlements, or to run out of gold so that they collapse.

From this, you will see that achieving a victory need a bit of thought. Its obviously easy if you're playing solo, but if its a H2H game, you will be trying to work out what your opponents strategy is.

Hope that helps :-)

Bob did you payee Campaign 1? If so, did you win a the Goblins? They seem to have it tough with the settlements close to them

Yeah, I played it a few times just for learning purposes - I really had mixed results - much depends on the die rolls. Its much different story when you play it with the full rules though.

I'd say lets play it in Vassal, but there is no mod for it yet :-(

Nah! Its not so bad these days (this is me tempting fate again).

Anyway, I live in Geordie-land so Scottish accents are no problem - we're almost IN Scotland ;-)

She likes fantasy settings. As far as wargaming, she has played some C&C and tolerates it

Seems like it's time for BattleLore!

My daughter loves BattleLore, but my wife isn't interested in it.

I just found it on eBay for $5 so I picked it up. It cost about as much to ship it.  ;D
I'll let you know when it gets here, Bob.

I've seen references to a .pdf version, but haven't been able to track it down.

This arrived today. It sells for $3.99 normally so I don't feel to bad about the cost. The scenario in it looks just like it would if it had been included in the game. It is two pages, I may just cut it out and keep it in the Burning Banner box.

They never responded to my enquiry on their FB page. I would do the same as you and just keep the scenario in the game box.

So I've played over half a dozen scenarios now, about half with the advanced rules and I can safely say this is a keeper.

I thought I was happy with the basic game but man, does the advanced stuff make it an entirely different game and really shake up the scenarios.

I feel I need to play some more scenarios, but I'm keen to make some progress through my unpaired list. So I'm going to pack it up and stick it under the desk in the played+keep pile.
