Mentioned In Dispatches – Season 7 Ep 12 – Wargaming Evolutions

3 December 2021 ~

The Mikes are back!  Brant and the guys wrap up their holiday weekend with a discussion of their personal wargaming evolutions from where they started to what they’re playing now.  And yes, there are computers involved, too.

Don’t forget, you can always catch up with past episodes on the “podcast” tab of our site.

We cover a lot of ground, from Star Fleet Battles to Third World War, and plenty in between.  OJsDad tells us about his love the Great War at Sea series, including their alternate histories.  BBMike gives us the lowdown on his love of muskets.  Brant talks about games way too complex for a 9-year-old (lookin’ at you, Red Star White Star).  Everyone talks about where they used to shop for wargames, and heck, one of them is even still open!  It’s a bit of an extended nostalgia trip, yes.  Share your own stories of your wargaming evolution below, or in our forums.

If you get a chance, please go hit the iTunes page for our podcast and give us a rating – whatever you think is fair!  We need some more reviews before iTunes will start recommending us in their podcast engine, so every rating helps!

We appreciate you checking out Mentioned in Dispatches!  Please leave us some feedback either in the comment area below, or in our discussion forum.  You can also find us on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube

  1. For me, that episode was like a triple play of gaming nostalgia from pre-teen years in the early 80s. You named them all: the Mattel Intellivision console, early Commodore personal computers (I had the C64 and was the envy of my friends with one of the early external FLOPPY disk drive units), and of course, the board games of yesteryear.

First wargame? I’m going to toss out the mass-market kid games like Battleship and Stratego, even though I did play a lot of that stuff as a kid. I’m going to say my first real “wargame” was the Avalon Hill version of Battleline’s Submarine. As a teenager, I was definitely in over my head with the rules & mechanics, but as the saying goes, there is a first time for everything.

    Good episode.
