When, Jimmy Doolittle bailed out of his plane, it was pitch dark. He could not see where he was, or where his crew had come down.
In his account, he was at first happy to land in a liquid, but then realised he had landed in a manure pit.
One foot was on a solid bit, but feeling about, he could not locate another sturdy spot.
Rather than take a chance of toppli g into the muck and drowning, he spent the rest of the night as motionless as he could.
The next morning, two of his crew spotted him and pulled him out.
Asking him if he was alright, Jimmy Doolittle quietly said, "I'm shit faced."
